Gas or wood fireplace?

I told DH that I would love to have a fireplace in our new home. One where I could walk in on a cool night, flick a switch & have an instant, cozy fire. DH says that he wants a wood burning fireplace because of the price of gas. I think they are messy & don't want to bother with anything but flipping a switch. So, what do you have? What do you wish you have?

He even went as far as to mention a pellet stove, but I really want a fireplace, not a stove.

We have a wood burning fireplace, and I love it...We had a gas fireplace in our last home, and hardly every used it...My Dh likes to "poke" at the fire....It's very cozy...

My mom and stepdad had a wood burning fireplace. While I loved the smell, it really irritated my husband who has sensitive lungs. Everytime we'd spend an evening at their home, the next morning he'd wake up hackin up a lung. I've heard though that it can have something to do with the type of wood you burn, but then maybe the good stuff isn't so cheap either. I will also say it was a constant mess my mom was cleaning up after my slob of a stepdad would bring in a wheelbarrow full.

We have two woodburning fireplaces, and use them OFTEN in the winter. The best part is that DH does all the cleaning up.

Do you have a source of free wood? And a place to store it? We have gas and the things I love about it are 1) it can be instantly turned on; 2) don't have to wait for it to burn out to go to bed, leave, etc.; 3) no clean-up.
