Gabby Petito

So if Brian is dead, what happens to the investigation of Gabby’s murder? If there was insufficient evidence to arrest Brian as a suspect (given that he was named only a “person of interest”), do they continue to look for more or simply close the case?

From the perspective of Gabby’s family, his death may not be the best outcome. Though I am guessing the FBI may have information that has not been disclosed publicly and more details may emerge.

I'm getting morbid here, but what an interesting story it would make to write a novel where somebody killed a woman, then later killed the husband and made it look like he took his own life out of guilt.

Couple of things…
Has it been a long enough time for remains to be skeletonized?
Clearly the area wasn’t flooded when Brian first went there so are we really supposed to believe it was underwater by the time the parents first told them about it? Why didn’t the dive team find anything if this is the exact place they told them to search? How did a notebook not completely dissolve if it was under water all this time and apparently not inside the waterproof bag?
It is all still fishy as hell.

I thought it was in a dry bag, and the area did have flooded areas when they did their initial search. I believe it was on and off due to flooded conditions, but his dad did go with them weeks ago to point out favorite trails.

I had initially thought it was in the bag as well, but a report today said that the parents found the bag and “another object” while the notebook and backpack were found elsewhere by the police. The bag was also ripped open at the bottom, so no longer waterproof in the slightest.

I can accept that the area had flooding at times, but his things were there, so he got there when it wasn’t flooded - either a month ago or just recently. They started looking for him within a week, so would it have already been underwater by then? It just strikes me as odd that the parents directed them to various trails with no luck, but this one - which couldn’t have been underwater when Brian was there - is the one they neglected to thoroughly search. I mean maybe it really did flood that fast. It’s just weird, especially since they did have dive teams, and again I question how a notebook could remain intact underwater for a month.

They will do as much investigation as possible with what they have available. If they can't prove anything it will end up as a cold case, never solved. Well unless something comes up at a later time. Remember cold cases have been solved using modern DNA methods that weren't available when the crime was committed. Who knows what future scientific methods and discoveries might lead to.
Yup and sometimes cold cases get reopened when interest is renewed either by outside things or by new evidence or possible leads.

Right around my area is the cold case of Alonzo Brooks. He died in 2004 (his body found a month after he disappeared) with an undetermined caused of death. Renewed interest and the case was reopened in 2019, his body exhumed in 2020. In 2021 his cause of death was updated to homicide. His case was also on the reboot of Unsolved Mysteries. Several months later after the FBI's continued investigation they found new details specifically a 2nd party when originally only 1 party where Alonzo was at the night he disappeared (and therefore only 1 set of people interviewed) was known. We're going on almost a year now from that new detail about the 2nd party but there is an up to $100K reward (put up by the FBI and U.S. Attorney's office) for any information if it results in an arrest and conviction as a result of the reopening of the case.

Cold cases happen every day but they sometimes do get reopened like you mentioned. You're totally right about DNA.

The wild speculation surrounding Brian's disappearance and his family's involvement is unbelievable. The Laundries didn't run to the media and give a daily update so folks made up their own stories. The Laundries were prudent...lawyered up and followed advice. We still don't know to what extent they cooperated with LE.

My opinion...many have been very cruel to the Laundrie family. They not only lost a son but appear to have loved Gabby too. This whole situation is heartbreaking.

If they really loved Gabby then why did they ignore her parents when they were looking for her? If Brian told them some lie about them breaking up and going their separate ways why not tell her parents that? Because some lawyer told them to be quiet? Would you be quiet if this situation involved your son and his fiance who you loved, if you truly believed that nothing bad happened to her? Wouldn't you want her parents to know that she was alright (again IF you believed your son didn't murder her because he fed you some lie).
IIRC they had the lawyer before she was officially reported missing, that's pretty suspicious almost like they were expecting some bad news about Gabby.
The Police wanted to talk to Brian after Gabby was reported missing (Sept 10 or 11), then he goes off on his "hike" a couple days after that, and his parents wait 4 days after that to report him missing. That isn't cooperation that is helping him evade the police. Losing their son could have been avoided.

Yep... https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/brian-laundrie-search

FBI announced the body was identified from dental records. Not time enough for DNA yet, but it was Brian.
Yup. So, he's not in Mexico, not on the Appalachian Trail, not working at a 7-11 in Las Vegas with Elvis. He's gator poo.. And fish food, bug chow. Not as mysterious as was thought. We may or may not find out how he died. I still suspect suicide but we may never find out.

The bag was also ripped open at the bottom, so no longer waterproof in the slightest.
In our local news story it said:

  • "Investigators also found a backpack and a notebook belonging to Laundrie, 23, near the remains while they were searching the Carlton Reserve in North Port, according to FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael McPherson.
  • "The notebook to my understanding has not been opened. You know, that will need to be processed," Taylor said (Taylor being the North Port Police spokesperson)
  • A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN the notebook is "possibly salvageable." The source said the notebook was "outside of the dry bag."
  • "It had been clearly wet and they are going to use any potential means to dry that out before opening it," according to the source, who added: "They'll be very careful with it."
  • The source said it is unclear how the notebook ended up outside the dry bag.

Today marks exactly 1 month ago (September 21) Gabby was confirmed & ID. His time of death perhaps anytime between September 13-September 17? Like others have suggested. Hope there's answers and closure in his notebook. Either way a very heartbreaking ending for everyone involved.

Can the Laundries try to claim the reward money? :scratchin Watch that be the next plot twist in this bizarre story.
