Fun things to do in Philly?

Do you like art? There are a couple of good shows at the Art Museum that will be there through April. Van Gogh and local photographer Zoe Strauss.

Looking for a nice, clean, and good location hotel to stay for a long weekend in April that won't break the bank. Two kids and what to be able to walk to tourist sites.

Capogiro gelato is very good. There is one right near El Vez.

I think Vetri just got a very good recommendation in the newspaper. Check out Craig LeBan's food column in the Philadelphia Inquirer www.philly.com

I agree Max Brenners is overpriced.

My teens love to hang on South St. we usually start around Front St. and South St. and wander around the stores to about 12th or so. Don't mis Isaiah

My favorite spot for a cheese steak is Jims at 4th and South.

Yu could travel (bus or subway) to Old City, loaded with contemporary art galleries and quite a range of good restaurants. On the first friday of each month the galleries keep their doors open into the evening. It's a great social scene.

The waterfront has some cool stuff also.

Yes! Luv South Street and luv, luv Jims....we've tried lots but this wins!

Also, the reading terminal market is a must for us.

;) Be very, very careful of those Jims steak people. They are rumored to be transplanted NY'ers who don't really know philly cheesesteaks. (yep, I'm throwing down the cheesesteak challenge).

Now for the best cheesesteaks, you have Tony Lukes on Oregon ave and a small place called Genos steak in South Philly, the italian district.

Uncle OOgie's is also a close runner up. LOL.

So if your niece is into shopping have here check out Walnut street starting at Broad and all the way down, they have some great quasi high end stores. H& M, anthropologie, Lucky jeans, coach and if you keep going they have some really nice vintage shops.

A long time ago they use to have a Segway tour in Philly. It was a lot of fun but I'm not sure if they still run it.

I just wanted to second the Eastern State Penitentiary. You get an audio tour and they give free guided tours. It was really creepy and awesome. But it is all open and is very cool.

I also liked the Mutter Museum.

Eastern State was amazing! Bought a shirt I wear all the time ;)

I love the suckling pig at Amada (if you are a iron chef fan, this is one of Jose Garces many restaurants in Philly), but I think you may need a minimum of 4 people to eat that and I know you have to order it at least 2 days in advance.

I have heard good things about Morimotos and 10 Arts as well.

Personally I love old city and would just hang and eat there all day.

South Street has Jims and Reading Terminal Market has a bunch of good places to eat.

Pancakes at the Dutch Eating Place in Reading Terminal!!!!! Only open on Wed, Thursday, Friday (not sure about Saturday)...get there early...be prepared to wait but definitely worth it for good, solid, PA dutch cooking. I go to Philly on business and we always eat there the day we go home.

Also love Chickie and Pete's for mussels and fries.

She may also mean the Philadelphia Magic gardens on south Street. It's an old building and the entire thing is covered in Mosaic glass, it also has a walk through garden although I never went in.

She means the Tiffany in the building. The clue was the magazine reference. The building that houses the Parrish/Tiffany mosaic is the Curtis building. That building used to be where many magazines were published - Ladies Home Journal, etc.

The other clue was the title of the piece. The PP said something Garden. The actual title of the piece is Dream Garden.

how is the aquarium? my daughter really wants to go there.

Well the aquarium is in Camden, NJ across the river from Philly. You could take the ferry from Philly to the aquarium -but I'm not sure if it runs year round.

You could drive to Camden, but FOLLOW ONLY MARKED ROUTES. Do not go via the GPS if you are unfamiliar with Camden. Do NOT go off course or try shortcuts. It is in a rough town, but that area (stadium, aquarium. concert venue and some other things ) is relatively decent. There is a decent amount of security/police presence. Trust me on this.. I'm in Camden often and even though I am now familiar, it is still "interesting".

The aquarium used to be run by the State and a few years ago a private company took it over. I went recently and it didn't really do much for me. I was expecting quite a bit of renovation since this new company and it just didn't do it for me.-- a lot of great ideas but execution kind of stunk.

It's kind of expensive for what you get--but if you are a teacher/student ask for discounts. It's not bad but could be better.

We took in a Phillies baseball game. The stadium is a block or so from the subway stop. We had a great time and couldn't believe how well behaved and family friendly the fans were, as compared to other stadiums we have been to.

I would also recommend the Constitution Museum. We didn't plan enough time in there.

The zoo as others mentioned was small and we also had been to better in other cities. We would not go back. We had gone in a hundred degree heat wave and nothing was air conditioned. The one inside seating restaurant was hotter than it was outside.

We also bought the philadelphia pass and thought it was well worth it. We really liked the on/off trolley tour bus and very much enjoyed eastern state penn audio tour. We would do this again. We also had very much enjoyed the tour through independence hall.

We loved philly and couldn't believe how drenched in history it felt.

The Lucy loop mentioned above is for the University City area. [/QUOTE said:
you'd think I know that living in Philly. I'm downtown all the time. I should remember the big purple bus.:rotfl: I think it's purple.

Thanks for clearing that up.
