From WDW to DL With Love - January 06, 2011 part 2

Happy week everyone. Mine has gone to heck in a handbasket I must say. Plus I am trying to get ready for a conference in Atlanta starting Saturday so too much to do and not enough time to get it all done.

So, have a good week and I will check back as time allows.

A few questions...

Anyone from CA flying into MCO on Jan 5th? Is that cutting it too close? I was thinking maybe we should fly out on the 4th in case of any weather or luggage delays. Opinions?

Also, has anyone gone to Blue Springs State Park in FL? I ran across this while looking for something to do before the cruise.

Angela I agree with the others - we are flying from San Jose most likely and will leave a day early. We were thinking of driving to LA but SJ is just easier from Fresno.

The SW flight I was looking at on the current schedule goes through PHX - so maybe we will be on the same connector to MCO!!!? Though alot could change with airline schedules before January I suppose. The flights through Dallas, Denver and Minneapolis (I think) are non options as far as I am concerned when flying in January.

Patiently waiting to book flights.....

I'll keep you posted on which flights we end up on. I don't really want to go through Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis or Kansas City either. All the rest of the flights get in real late.

It sounds like the other couple with us can go on Jan 4th so I think will do that just to be on the safe side.

Good Morning, Ladies! It's still chilly here, but we did have the window open last night. :)

I am having zero luck finding a room mate. 4 women *want* to go, but everybody's got an excuse :(

I completely feel your frustration. I have planned a 3 week cross country Route 66 road trip for August, and I have been struggling to find someone who can go. Like you said, I have quite a few people who say "gosh, I would love to be able to do that", but they have so many excuses, and mostly they either just don't have the time off or the money. I would hate to do that trip alone but I'm determined to go and enjoy myself with or without a "co-pilot", but I am still hoping someone decides to join me.

I'd be open to booking AA - but I have no clear idea what day we're going to fly out yet. We're actually thinking of Dec 30th and spending New Years there, then doing some general exploring before the cruise. But until we know for sure - SouthWest's policy on not having change fees makes it the best option. :cool2:

If you do decide to do New Years in WDW and want any advice, let me know. I did NYE in Magic Kingdom this past year, it was a lifelong dream of mine and such an amazing experience, and I love to share advice with anyone who is thinking of doing the same thing!

Good morning all. Ohio is cool this morning but it's supposed to be 70 this afternoon so open windows here we come!:banana:

I don.t think there is a "better" side for pictures. Our balcony was on the Starboard side and the Deck 4 picture was taken on that side, too. I only wanted to be on the Port side this time because that is the side the web cams are on. If we don't follow a sub maybe my friends and family will get to see us.

Here are a couple of pictures of the photographers at the Mira Flores Locks.

The funny thing is that the whole while we were pulling away from the locks the photographers were still taking pictures. I was wondering how they were going to get back on the ship when we finally pulled completely away without them. :confused3 Found out later they hitched a ride on the Pilot's boat. :thumbsup2

great pics and story.

Are y'all talking about weather as a reason not to choose Dallas? Sometimes, weather can play a factor with flights in/out of Dallas in the winter. This year was an abnormal with as much snow as DFW area got. However, we've flown into/out of Dallas quite a bit in during Dec-Feb and never had an issue. I have had problems in the summer though with thunderstorms.

To me, the main disadvantage of Dallas on SWA is there are no non-stop options to Orlando. So for y'all flying into Dallas first, it would be a minimum 2 stop flight. I can handle one stop/change of planes but wouldn't want to deal with 2.

I would love a non-stop as I get sinus headaches when I fly, but no such luck from Sacramento, so I try to stick with only one stop. I think we'll probably fly out on the 4th too, but my group doesn't really want to go into the parks for just one day.

I completely understand..sorry about the headaches! We are using the one day just to hit all of our favorite rides as quick as possible. Also, it will give me a day to relax before the cruise.

Des, which airport are you flying out of?

We are flying out of LAX. Orange County is more expensive for us and we are about the same distance from either.

I am so sorry! I hope you find someone soon.

NYE would be fun! Weloved spending here at DLR but since we will be gone for so long on the cruise, we opted to just go right before the cruise. It was tempting tho!

I would love to hear more about your experience with that. The only "big" event I've ever done with Disney was the bicentenial fourth of July in 1976 (figuring nobody would have a better fireworks show). It was crowded, but I didn't really car, as I wasn't going so much for the rides as the atmosphere.

So yes, any advice would be very welcome. :confused3

Jeff and I have done all the parks for NYE (first year down here). We started in Epcot, then MK, AK and finally MGM. This was back when AK was open later (9pm) and did a night safari. That was the best ever.
All the parks were very crowded, but doable. We didn't ride much, but that wasn't the point. It was such a festive atmosphere and so much fun.
We've also done, the 4th of July and a few other holidays, but nothing was like NYE.

We spent the entire NYE 09-10 in MK, getting up at 5:30 AM, on the bus by 6:15, arrive by 6:30 for the 7:00 AM opening. We didn’t have any kids with us. It was just me (23) and my brother (19), so we had a lot of energy and I would imagine it would be more difficult to get through the day with young kids. On the other hand, if your kids are used to being in the parks for long days on other trips, this day might not be that much worse if you break it up with breaks and meals. First off, be sure to make your reservations for whatever sit-down restaurants 180 days in advance in order to make sure you get the times that you want. I recommend doing what we did, an 11:00 AM or so lunch, and a 4:30 PM dinner. They were nicely spaced out, and we got out of dinner just in time for the 6:15 PM castle lighting which is not to be missed. I cannot emphasize enough that you must pick at least 2 table service meals for this day. It will be expensive, yes, but I cannot imagine being in the park all day and night without having had two substantial, sit-down relaxing meals. If you want reviews or advice on the two restaurants we picked, let me know and I can go into further detail.

While waiting around, if you plan to be in a good spot on Main Street for the fireworks, you need to really be in the area by 6:15. Try to secure a spot near the curb so that you and your family can sit down. We were lucky enough to be able to be near the curb and then another family with young kids couldn’t wait anymore, so they left and gave their curb seats to us and we guarded them the rest of the night. The Disney cast members will not let you sit in the middle of the street or walkways until the fireworks actually start, so you really need to get a curb seat early and stay there the rest of the night. The good thing is, with a family you can take turns sitting as long as at least one of you is “holding down the fort” and guarding the spot, the others can go off to the bathroom, get a snack, etc. There is a lot to keep the kids’ attention. At 6:15 is the castle lighting ceremony. Then there was a Spectro Magic parade at 7:00, Holiday fireworks at 8:00 PM, then another Spectro Magic parade at 10:30, then the fireworks again at 11:50. The last hour and a half was so energizing, by then everyone knows “they made it” waiting all day and night, everyone is blowing their horns, there is a DJ and lights up at the castle, it was really fun. So all of that definitely helped to pass the time.

As far as recommendations for the earlier part of the day, I recommend getting to the park at 7:00 AM when it opens, and use those first 4 hours or so getting all of your rides in before the lines turn insane later in the day. Throughout the day, there are tons of extra things going on that aren’t available on regular park days. There are extra parades, activities, and more to keep the kids entertained throughout the day in addition to the attractions and taking time out to eat. We did the Celebrate Street Parade, Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, some other Christmas character filled show on stage at the castle, and there were several other things scheduled too. So there really is a lot to pack in the day.

Oh, and one last tip, don’t plan any park for the next day, January 1. If you do end up staying all the way to the midnight fireworks, the line for the buses is super long whether you leave at 12:00 or 2:00 AM. We left at 1:30 and didn’t get back to the hotel until 3:00. So the next day, we just relaxed all day and it was very much needed. That and because we needed time to recharge before our Disney cruise the next day!

Normally I like to fly through Dallas as it breaks up the trip nicely from Sacramento and our trips are in the Fall. For this trip I'll have too many bags so I'd like to use SWA and I'm trying to avoid weather delays. Like you I can handle one stop, but that's my limit.

This all changes in 2014. In 2014 we will be able to offer non stop flights anywere we want.

I belive from Sacramento you have four options for a one stop flight. I might be wrong so don't hold it agenst me. You could go to Chicago, Kansas City, Phoenix, or Las Vegas. All four of those cities offer non stops to Orlando.

You guys seem to know about a lot of things - has anybody dumped cable for something else? If so, what? And how happy are you with it? (Tv and internet)

Am currently on AT&T's UVerse (after dropping DirectTV after dropping Comcast). I know some people who rotate back and forth to get new customer discounts - but the truth is if you call them and say you're thinking of switching, your current provider will almost certainly offer you a deal. Now I don't know whether to be excited about the prospect or terrified :-)

But thanks much for the advice. I've already posted a reminder to book restaurants at 180 days.

Seems it might make sense to drive instead of using the busses - the Ferries do tend to move people pretty quickly to the parking lots.

You've given me a lot to think on - thanks.

We have UVerse too. I've been with them for almost 2 years after ditching Comcast. Hated them. Service so unreliable (sometimes out for a day or longer) and customer service absolutely terrible.

Anyway, with UVerse, never had a issue until 6 months ago. Started getting intermittent outages and it took about 5 phone calls to get someone out here. Then, when someone finally came, said they needed a line guy to come out. They never set up that service call. Finally got a line guy out here about 3 weeks ago and they said we had some "bunched up lines". I hope the issue is resolved once and for all. I love how UVerse works - being able to record 4 shows at once, being able to watch recorded shows on any TV and being able to set up/delete recordings from any TV.

So, I think overall you'd be happy with UVerse. Now that it seems that our service is back to normal, I couldn't be happier with our internet and TV.

About the discounts, twice I have called UVerse and just asked them if they had any discounts for current customers. I stated that customer loyalty should be worth something. The first time, they offered a $10 discount/mo. for 6 months, the second time $15/mo for 6 month. Not a lot but $150 is $150!

Sorry to hear you're having difficulty finding a roomate; I also am sailing solo so I will definitely be very agreeable to sharing meals, activities or Palo with you at any time during this cruise.

Thanks Alan. We'll see what the new schedule shows when it comes out, but looking at the end of Oct it looks like Phoenix and Las Vegas are the only ones. The Phoenix route gets in around 5/6PM and the Las Vegas one around midnight. I guess it will seem really an official vacation once we book our flights. Can you tell I'm OCD when it comes to planning.:rolleyes1
