From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

I just noticed you "Mine mine mine" mug! That strudel looks amazing. I'll have to read your update later....gotta run the kids somewhere.

Sounds like a tough time traveling so far. At least it helps knowing that Disney will be worth the effort. The coffee looked good.

The mug is a bit of a "sneak peak" at my souvenir shopping this year...

I guess this was the last good coffee Katharina got for quite some time... :rolleyes1

That sort of check-in mess would have seriously stressed ME. OUT!

Why, oh why do people wait until the last minute to check in??!! Surely people know that security IS that tight and you could be pulled out anywhere along the line. It ALWAYS takes us longer to get to our final boarding area than we think it's going to.

Airport food is what it is. I think we may have eaten in the very same place you got your pizza, but we got the most amazing almond paste and cherry pastries there. And of course coffee!!

I love A380s! They are so roomy. I too remember the different boarding levels in Frankfurt. It was very interesting.

I don't think Katharina's salad even remotely resembled lettuce. Was it watercress or spinach or ??? I do recognize the artichoke. The nice thing is that Lufthansa feeds their folks VERY well. We were always offered free wine multiple times and even cognac after meals. And the meals were always filling and pretty tasty. They make a pasta/manicotti thing that I remember being actually pretty good.

I too, would have never guessed a post would have been at a check-in station. Huh!

The green stuff is lamb's lettuce (or maybe you call it corn salad? - there seem to be many English names - even more than in German, there I know three). And no artichoke - I'm sorry, but Belgian endive (according to Wikipedia)

It wasn't too stressful because we knew we still had plenty of time because we arrived so early. But the people who arrived later than us...

Security at Tegel is actually not bad at all because of the set-up with security for every gate. So it is actually possible to arrive pretty late for a flight from Tegel. I know many friends who when travelling on business plan to arrive 40 minutes before departure and that's possible here. I think no one ever would try that in Frankfurt!

Quite possible, it is the Mövenpick Marché on the lower level close to the local train station. I like Mövenpick, they usually have very tasty food! I think it was just difficult for Katharina to find something she could eat since all the breakfast offerings had dairy in them.

I am so envious, you got to fly on an A380?? Was that when you went to Dubai (or was it somewhere else in that area??)? We were on an A 340 which I like a lot, too. I think Airbus planes generally feel roomier than Boeing planes, even the smaller ones.

And just to put in an additional factoid (even Disney related: One of the German names for lamb lettuce is Rapunzel - like the fairy tale which will be the next Disney hand drawn animation film. :goodvibes

More on flight meals in the next uppdate! I just got in the habit of eating before I get on a plane and not rely only on being served food there since I had some not so nice experiences. Once we were delayed to take off for three hours, two of those we spent sitting on the plane, so it took ages until we got something to eat. And the other time we actually had to get off the plane and spent another night in Orlando and once we got off, all food places were already closed. :scared1: We were really glad in both cases that we did not get on the plane hungry!

Ok, so I know know not to order salad. in any airport over there. and my greatest fear is security. gah. =]

Great job! =]

What a long day of travel for you! I forget how spoiled I am that it's less than a 3 hour flight to get to Orlando from CT. Any little issue at the airports always makes me nervous, even if I have plenty of time. On one trip one of the TSA agents started giving me a hard time, that I wasn't the person in my ID. :scared1: I had no other photo ID with me, so had to show him all the credit cards and insurance cards with the same name on them. I've learned my lesson, and now I bring my work ID with me. At least it has my name and a photo on it. At least this last trip I didn't have any issues, as my hair is once again the same color, and a similar style to my ID.3

I've never heard of selling pizza by weight! How odd!

WOW that was a long check in. Thank heavens you arrived so early. I've always been impressed with the security at Frankfurt, it's just in and out and efficient but yes...a little scary.

Illy has good espresso but I think their drip coffee is rather meh. Still, it's better than hot brown and warm...which is the Disney coffee of choice. Looks like you guys had Americano's though. :thumbsup2

That pizza looks quite good!

I was hoping you were going to show pictures of your plane! ;) It is HUGE!!! I imagine (I hope) the seating would be more comfortable on a larger plane and longer flight?
Your pizza looked good.....I love black olives on my pizza ;) How odd to be sold by weight
Mmmmmm your strudel looks delicious! Too bad you are so far away!!

Tracy

You probably didn't mean for it to get noticed yet. Sorry, but it caught my eye.

Don't worry, I kind of placed it there as a bit of a sneak peak and was wondering wether anyone would spot it - so you won the prize as the one who did!! :goodvibes

I almost typed that! The coffee at DisneyWorld is so terrible it doesn't even deserve the name "coffee".

I think Katharina is the one with a much more distinct opinion on that and I will let her comment on her coffee experiences in the world once we get there! ;)

I will go more into the topic of cultural differences with regard to salad in a bit! But we do have good salads here in Germany as well! I think Katharina was rather limited with her choiced due to her no dairy, no onion and no tomatoe diet.

That's scary about the ID! I always have several forms of ID with me when I travel, but most of them have the same picture on them. :confused3 I guess with our new passports and identity cards we have fingerprints stored into them, so this might help in such a case. But then TSA would most likely not have the right reader for it...

You can't believe how envious I am of this 3 hours flight to WDW you have! If it weren't for the flight, a trip to WDW would actually be much more affordable than a trip to DLP which has become absolutely crazy expensive!

Illy is very common here, I think it is just a very well established Italian brand. I never had a drip coffe from them. I think we had Americanos, but I am not sure. Katharina is the coffee person here! :goodvibes

Hi Tracy, you are welcome to come over to visit for some strudel! Liesa is already coming to see us in August in Nuremberg!! :goodvibes

The plane is really rather large. It is actually quite similar in size to a Jumbo (a Boeing 747) without the second floor. It is more comfortable inside, but not so much...

Wow, the strudel looks good! :thumbsup2

Thanks! It was fun to make it and then eat it. :goodvibes

I will be happy to comment on coffee experiences at WDW. As I was a frequent visitor on the DIS before our stay, I knew what to expect and wasn't too dissapointed...

At the airport we had Lungos, Americano has water added to the expresso, a Lungo is made with more water, but I don't know the exact amounts of coffe/water. It was actually quite common in the pre-Starbucks era.

You sure handled the airport experience well. Can't wait to hear about the on plane experience.

And that strudel looks soooooo good.

Your strudel looks so yummy. I am excited for you to get the resort as we are staying at AKL when we go in Nov. and I am looking forward to your pictures.

Hi Magdalene, just wanted to drop by to tell you that I have found your thread and am eagerly awaiting your food report, trip report and anything else you might have planned DIS-wise. I really enjoy reading your reports! (and nodnol's as well, of course!) :yay:

You didn't abandon us, did you Flossbolna???

Come back to us!!

:goodvibes

Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! :goodvibes Please come back to play! :)

Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! :goodvibes Please come back to play! :)

What is that song that goes "______, can you come out to play, come out to play, come out to play?" and then repeats itself. I cannot remember the first part and it is driving me coocoo. :dance3:
