Freedom to Marry Day Protest Planned

I can't understand this mentality that religious belief is to be used as a hammer to beat others into submission!!! How is that bringing the Good News of God to others???

What I'm coming to understand is why so many people think Christians are all intolerant, hateful bigots. I've not run into this attitude in RL very often. (but then I do live an hour outside of the sinful metropolis of NYC) I can't imagine any Christian that I go to Mass with, or go to work with or any in my family that would say the kind of things I've read here. I guess we're all going to the hot place because we've misled the brethren.

I'm glad you're starting to understand why there is this visceral reaction to religion, specifically when someone describes themself as a "Christian". The Joe-kind "Christians" have done more to dirty up Christianity than a non-believer like myself could ever do.

Whenever someone tells me, "but real Christians aren't like that", my standard answer is "I respectfully suggest you tell them that and not me".

How many people went from church to a KKK meeting? How much damage has the fabulous Rev. Ted Haggard done or Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson or Oral Roberts or Jimmy Swaggert or Jim Baker or the child-molesting priests and the ones who covered up for them ............. this is certainly a long list and this is just getting started.

What I have never understood is how real Christians let the nutjobs dirty up the word Christian. Maybe these last umpteenth pages of this thread has finally made enough people mad so they start to fight back against the religious right, their bigotry, and hijacking of Christianity.

Why is it if you are against the gay lifestyle, its hate? Why cant people believe what they want without the label? I see more hate from the gay community than from heteros. What are your thoughts on what the Mass Supreme Court did about gays getting married? Did they do the right thing or did they over step their authority? Why cant there be a vote on it? That gives the people their say!! My daughters school wanted her second grade class to read a book with a gay theme. I was able to get it stopped and was promptly labeled a hater. Is that fair, is it fair i want to teach my daughter at 7 years old and not have it forced on her? Well you should have seen the "hate" coming from the few outspoked activist in the area. Luckily once the rest of the parents found out what i did i was thanked over and over. Its funny that the gay comminuty wants everyone to accept them and what they think, but if you are againt them, you get clubbed with the hate label. You need to realize it goes both ways.

Your post in and of itself is answer enough to your very own question.

Just an aside, but I absolutely do laugh out loud whenever I hear this sort of "argument". :rotfl:

Their father, Laban, deceived Jacob into sleeping with Leah when he (Jacob) had been pledged to Rachel. He did have children with both.

Thank you, Jimmie. :goodvibes

Just as an aside, I visited Rachel's tomb on the West Bank in Nablus ........ in between gun shots, rock throwing, demonstrations, arrests, etc. Just another day in the Holy Land. ;)

Religion, most religions, have a long history of this type of behavior.

Religion's purpose, just like government's purpose, IS to control the thoughts and minds of the masses so that they can have a better handle of their behavior. Let's face it, it's not really such a bad thing, we wouldn't want Lord of the Flies, but the problem comes when people buy too much into it like fantaical Christians or Jhadists. They are the same, obviosuly some are more radical than others, but Christians of 500-1000 years ago were pretty damn violent and oppressive, like the current crop of jihadists. That's not to say most people of any particular religion are bad, they are not, most are just normal average people, but no one pays attention to them.

The homosexuality issue (all the state constitutional amendments banning gay marriage) is just a manifestation of the the religious masses taking themselves too seriously. They will get knocked off their high horse soon enough, I really believe that.

Homophobia is more controversial. Not everyone who disapproves of homosexuality has a phobia of homosexuals. But many people do react to homosexuals out of fear. In fact, the right-wing has been instrumental in the "phobia" explanation via the "gay panic" defense that condoned the physical assault of homosexuals.

Thanks for speaking to this. I understand the idea behind "homophobia"; I even am aware of the definition of teh word according to Webster's. But the use of the word has always seemed disingenuous. The "-phobia" suffix puts a strong emphasis, IMO, on fear. I have long felt that it was an inaccurate description of the motivation for hurtful things done to homosexual people.

Basically, you have no answer. Didnt think you would.

Oh I do sweetie. It would just take too long and your question is not worht my time.

Edited to add: I don't typically respond to folks who have been banned from the DIS under one name only to appear under another, hence my lack of desire to answer you. You were banned for a reason.

If you don't want your daughter subjected to real life, I suggest you homeschool her. You can control what goes into her mind for her first 18 years, beyond that, she will be in the real world where she will come into contact with <GASP!> gay people. <creepy voice> I see gaaaayyyyy people! </end creepy voice>

I totally respect your right to have an opposing opinion. I reject your "right" to VOTE on whether or not other people can do things that have no affect on you what so ever. WHY can't we just vote on it, you ask? Because the constitution is supposed to protect us from MOB RULE. That's why!!

1st....Gays are here, we are not going away so to oppose a book that showcases someone different from yourself is , I feel, ignorant. You do not have to agree with the way we live. I do not agree with the way some heteros live but I would never stop them from how they want to live. Would you want a book banned that had a positive Islamic slant to it? That is what school is for, to learn, not simply the viewpoints that the parents have but more so what many different groups feel and think. I also think it is pretty naive to think that not one child in that school is gay or has gay parents (I know the horror!)
2nd I see myself not hating straight people, I see myself protecting myself from them. You may not realize but it still is dangerous n most places to exist as an openly gay female (or gay male for that matter).

Oh can you show me where the hate is from the gay community onto the straight community?

No hate here.

God and I want what's best for all His children. :cool2:

I will not jump on the bandwagon of those who encourage people to leave God's path for an immoral lifestyle. :sad2:

:lmao: Your kidding right? If not, who are you to tell anyone else their lifestyle is "immoral"?! So anyone who doesn't follow "god's" path is basically doomed?

Yay! Let's all vote on whether we should discriminate against gay people! :woohoo:

I live in Ohio, and you should have heard the ridiculous ads in 2004 when it came up for a vote. (The state had to change the constitution because state marriage laws didn't specify whether or not the people getting married had to be of opposite sexes--it was obviously just assumed.) The ads were so stupid--they weren't even religious. "It just makes sense" was the theme. :sad2:

Why is it if you are against interacial marriage , its hate? Why cant people believe what they want without the label? I see more hate from the mixed-race families than from same race families . Why cant there be a vote on it? That gives the people their say!! My daughters school wanted her second grade class to read a book with a interacial marriage theme . I was able to get it stopped and was promptly labeled a hater. Is that fair, is it fair i want to teach my daughter at 7 years old and not have it forced on her? Do you see how DUMB this sounds?

Sadly, I am familiar with the same type of ad as I was living in CA when they passed their gay marriage ban and was here in AZ just in time to see the gay marriage ban passed here as well. It's very, very sad.

That made no sense...not in reality anyway. If i decide to send my daughter to a PUBLIC school and she is subjected to it, then it DOES effect me and my family.

Of couse, the affect is that your daughter will see that there is more to the world than a narrow minded view of what kind of relationship is valid and what is not.

You and i both know the only reason they dont want the vote is because it will lose BADLY. Let the people speak!!!

Yes, let's do that. Let's let the people decide if we should hang the gay people in the public square. I mean, if we're going to discriminate, let's go for broke!

The people can "speak" all they want, I am not opposed to free speech. I AM opposed to narrow minded jerks imposing their religion on me or anyone else. I don't believe in your god or your bible and it's my right to NOT have to live by your silly rules.

The key word is PUBLIC.

We are all not like you nor do we want to be, as I am sure you would never want to be me.

Voters haven't voted to ADD gay marriage to the law, just to add bans on it to the law. They don't seem to lose, generally. I wonder how interracial marriage would have done across the country if it came to a vote in 1960, before Loving v. Virginia.

Sadly, I am familiar with the same type of ad as I was living in CA when they passed their gay marriage ban and was here in AZ just in time to see the gay marriage ban passed here as well. It's very, very sad.

AZ turned it down last November, though, didn't they?

But yeah, you know what I mean by the stupid knee-jerk crap in the ads.

Ah, the old, "but what if you had the same attitude about african americans, and look what happened to them". Sorry, you cant compare a race of people to a chosen lifestyle!!!

Uh, inter-racial marriage *is* a chosen lifestyle.

No, but many see it as selfish perversion of an adjective. Which is just as bad.

Pick your battles honey. To get bent out of shape because the homosexual community "stole" the word gay is ridiculous.

Anyway, I posted the following for you prevously but you clearly didn't see it:

I've seen some pretty incredibly comments on this thread and others like it but ARE YOU SERIOUS? You're getting all high and mighty, if not downright uppity, about the ga... sorry, homosexual population using the word "gay" for reasons other than representative of "carefree, fun, happy" etc... And in the same mindset you can justify the use of the "f" word originally intended for a bundle of sticks, in hateful reference to the ga... sorry, homosexual population?

Absolutely outrageous. Do you even know what that word, when used as a bundle of sticks, is truly in refererence too? Do you have any friggin' IDEA? Bundles of sticks were used to burn particular people at the stake. And that included ga... sorry, HOMOSEXUAL people at one time.

Again, absolutely outra... sorry, DISGUSTING.

Oh, and I'm GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY.

Thoughts?

Uh, inter-racial marriage *is* a chosen lifestyle.

Yeah, last I checked. Another lifestyle that hurts no one, choice or no choice.

EPCOTopian, The gay couples in the US aren't going to stop loving each other and living together if they can't marry, so what's the difference to you? The only thing that will change is their rights to some benefits that we straight people get. What's the deal, really?
