Free Refils at the Poly?

We stayed at the Poly in 1999. At that time they had a special where you could buy a mug and get free refills on your soft drinks, coffee, tea etc. the whole time you were there. We are planning a trip back to the Poly and amazingly we still have this mug. ( it has Minnie in a hammock and Mickey on a surf board) Does anyone know if I can take it back and continue to get free refills, or if I will be ridiculed for keeping this piece of plastic for the past 7 years! Thanks for the help.

Before you get flamed to death. You have asked a very touchy question on this board.

The rule on the mugs is they are good for length of the stay that you purchased them. Not for return trips.

I don't know what your old mug states but the new mugs indicate that they are to be used at your resort during your stay. So the current policy is that mugs may not be reused for refills during a future visit.

I see you are new to the Disboards. Welcome! This is a hot little topic you've posted about. I will arrive at the Poly next weekend and if I saw you there I wouldn't personally ridicule you or anyone else for refilling an old mug, despite the fact that under the current policy it is against the rules to do so. However, I will forewarn you that people who admit to refilling old mugs on these boards receive a fair amount of ridicule.

Mugs are good for the current visit only. Be careful at the Poly about reusing because I've seen people called on it when bringing old mugs or other resort mugs to refill. Some of the CMs do not put up with that. Welcome to the DIS!!

We stayed at the Polynesian in 1997 and bought the mugs. At that time, they were only good for the length of your stay at the Polynesian. It wasn't stated on the mug, but signs were posted. So your mug falls under that same policy. You'll need to buy some new mugs.

By the way, we stil have our old Polynesian mugs and use them occasionally at home. So if you are going to be ridiculed, so will I. We can laugh together. :goodvibes

Have a great trip.

Being a former CM, I would advise you to ask the CM at the drink station when you arrive. If you were told then that you could bring back the old mug, then the CM will allow you to fill'er up at that time. Their job is to exceed your expectations. By honouring your original purchase agreement, they are making your stay a Magical one. And we all know how they love to do that.

Drink up and have fun!

Whatchya wanna know? :smooth:

This is the way I see it. When my family & I bought our Contemporary mugs in January of 2000, they had signs that said the mugs were good for life & future visits. So because of that we continue to use them, so we are just following the rules of when we bought our mugs & the Cast Member who sold them to us confirmed that they would be good for life & future visits. Now today when new mugs are purchased they are only good for length of stay, however I have not seen anything posted about old mugs not being good anymore at the Food & Fun Center. I have seen the sign that says good for length of stay, but nothing in writting that says old mugs are no longer good. So in my opinion your mugs are still good at the Polynesian so I say use them all you want. Lastly if anyone wants to flame me about this, go ahead but you can't stop my family & I from using the mugs we have now. Besides I highly doubt that another guest will tell my family & I we can't use our mugs because in the past Cast Members at the Food & Fun Center have seen my family & I using them to which they did not blink an eye, so why should we listen to unofficial mug policy who are just other guests on vacation at WDW?

Since this post was about mugs I have always wondered this. Why does everyone get more upset if you want to use an old mug at the Resort you bought it at & not get more upset at people who use their mugs at other Resorts? I can't count how many times I have seen people using a Wilderness Lodge or All Star mug at the Food & Fun Center so wouldn't that be worse then using an old mug? I mean all the posts I see about mugs are people saying don't use old mugs, but I have never seen a post dedicated just to people using their mugs at other Resorts. Basically I think that would be worse then re-using an old mug. However that is just what I think.

I've seen others say the same thing. Yet, others report that when they bought their old mugs (eg 1997, above) that it was a different policy. I have no personal knowledge so was careful to state I didn't know what the OP's previous mug indicated and only what the current policy is. I know if I purchased a mug or anything else that had a lifetime use, I'd expect to have that policy honored whether the item cost $12 or $1,200. Who wouldn't? I mean if I buy an appliance with a lifetime warranty, but my sister buys the same appliance a year later when the manufacturer only offered a one year warranty, that wouldn't mean my warranty would be reduced. My lifetime warranty would be grandfathered in.

Regardless, I don't care what people do with their mugs. They don't result in pool overcrowding and my ability to find a chair on a hot day. :lmao:

Kind of like being a cafeteria Catholic. Picking and choosing which of the rules you want to follow and disregarding the rest.

We should call it a Cafeteria Disney fan, pick and choose-
I won't stuff my room, but I will pool hop.
I won't pool hop, but I will reuse my old mug.
I won't park at the CR to go to the MK, but I will put an extra kid in the room.

Either you follow the rules or you don't.

duck and run ;)
And by the way....

:welcome:

For the $12.00 I would just buy new mugs. You can never have too many at home in the cabinet- lol.

And I'm sure you shower before you enter the pool every single time, Deb.

And I'm sure that if you were told you could use something for life at the time of purchase, you would give up that privilege in a second if a new policy were to be implemented the next day. You seem like a person who wouldn't argue the fact you were sold something with a lifetime guarantee :thumbsup2

Is this really a rule? I honestly never read the signs with the pool rules!

Nope, this is inaccurate. We've stayed at the Polynesian many many times. The sign may have recently changed but forever it just said the price and that it was good for unlimited refills.

When the Polynesian first started selling mugs, we bought a couple or more each trip. We have pink ones by Thermos which were the BEST, pink ones that are similar to the current ones except in design, some with celebrations, etc. We always bought new ones each trip until one time I heard a CM telling another patron they were good forever. For a trip or two, we did take ours back but in general I think that is a pain.

After I started reading the DIS in 2000 or so I became intrigued with the controversy. So every trip after that I specifically looked at the sign. It never did change to length of stay. We haven't stayed at the Polynesian since January of this year and I can't swear it may have not changed by then. But it did not say that in 1997 or for years afterwards.

Nonetheless, there have been posts with letters from WDW saying that they are length of stay now.

And boy, can I relate to them tumbling out of the cabinet!

Maybe I should take one of our old pink ones back. :rotfl:

It's well within your rights sistah! And if you're too embarrassed to, send me one in the mail and next time I'm there I'll get a picture with my arm around the drink station CM meanwhile filling up your old pink mug with your drink of choice. I'll post that pic on here faster than someone can say 'length of stay'.

It's the principle of the thing...which again, goes for anyone who was told at the time or bought a mug during the old policy...Disney will honour your pink mug. But is it really worth it to bring it back? I guess that's personal preference.
