Free Kate

They aren't being treated the same. She's charged under different statutes which carry different penalties than someone that just goes out and rapes people. She's been offered a plea bargain that carries no prison time that wouldn't be offered to someone that just goes out and rapes people. And under Romeo and Juliet laws, she'll be able to be off the sex offender registry quite unlike those that just go out and rape people. The differences are easy to spot. Yet you refuse to spot them. There's no conflating the two, except on your part.

She won't even have to be registered as a sex offender because they are offering to plea her to child abuse,

After seeing the video I think the way this could come full circle is that the parents of the victim could file a suit saying they are being persecuted for being a couple from two different races. It wouldn't be any more ridiculous than claiming this is a gay persecution issue.

Take gender out of it. Just think about your 14 year old running away from home and being hidden from you by an 18 year old who was having sex with her. Why on earth would anyone think this is okay?

Being gay doesn't protect someone from the law.

That's good news because that part has always seemed ludicrous to me.

18 year old has sex in the school bathroom with 14 year old (Gee, think maybe that's why she was expelled?), then picks minor up when she ran away, takes her to bedroom to have sex.

Why indeed? Yet meny seem to be OK with it

I'm wondering if they could even have filed kidnap charges. Even if the 14 year old was willing, well, she can't consent.

I think the Hunts made a big mistake calling so much attention to this case. Spreading misinformation at the start didn't help either.

Do signatures really have infuence on trials?

I find absolutely disgusting that people are posting the young girls name and the family's phone number all over the internet to harass the family.

This whole situation just goes to show that those who shout the loudest demanding tolerance and equality only want those things from you while not requiring it of themselves.

I am appalled at the support the adult is getting! That it is a same sex relationship has no bearing. No 18 year old needs to be dating a 14 year old!

The 18 year old's facebook page seems to be romanticizing the relationship, to gain sympathy.

Really, so you know that the people posting the girls name and number go around shouting for tolerance and equality?

I also have no idea why this turned into a gay issue. I don't think that part matters at all. It's about an adult having sex with a child unable to consent (not to mention helping her run away). Any mix of genders in this scenario is unacceptable.

The problem is if similarly situated relationships between a boy and a girl that are 18 and 14 aren't being prosecuted. I don't have evidence that it is or isn't happening, but that is why people are commenting on the orientation of these children.

Unfortunately, it is going to go to court now since Kate turned down the plea, and they will make this entire thing a gay issue. That will be their focus. I expect a large gay contingency to protest outside the courthouse and it will end up being a circus. Lost will be the fact that an adult had sex with a child. :sad2:

18 y/o boys are absolutely being prosecuted for the same thing; it just doesn't make the news. Kate's parents made this news and they have made this a gay issue. I heard a lawyer the other day say that 9 out of 10 cases brought before them in their district that involve 18 y/o males having sex with minors are prosecuted.

Joan McCarter of Daily Kos — who had originally posted a petition supporting Kaitlyn Hunt — removed that petition and corrected the story as soon as she learned the truth:

Thu May 23, 2013 at 10:29 AM PT: The public scrutiny of this case has brought to light problems with the initial reporting, and with the original story coming from the Hunt family. Previously, Hunt’s parents said that the younger girl was 15, and Hunt 17 when the relationship began. The release of the arrest warrant made clear, as subsequent news stories report, that the younger girl was 14 and Hunt was indeed 18 when the relationship began.
These corrections, and the initial dishonesty of Hunt’s parents, make this story much more problematic, and our original petition moot.

I would say that the difference may be in how many are brought before them. Its not the prosecutors fault if charges are not pressed of course. I just think they are maintaining that charges would have never been pressed had Kate been a boy.

If I was the child's parent and the adult in question was male and all the other circumstances were identical, I would have pressed charges. I have a 14 yo girl...believe me, I would press charges!

Even if the two were peers in school?

What if your daughter had pleaded to give the 18-year-old love interest a chance? Invite him/her over for dinner so you and your husband/wife could "grill" the kid?

Not kid - ADULT!!!!

...and there's a huge difference IMO between HS dating, which I would oppose - but really there are no laws broken, and having sex.

18 y/o female admits guilt, gets probation & registered sex offender.....sex with minor boys (doesn't give their age).

20 y/o female charged.....sex with 14 y/o

This was what I found just spending a few minutes on Google. There are plenty more, but they don't make national news because they don't have parents like Kate does who will exploit the gay angle.

Adult according to the law, sure.

The law also says 18 year olds aren't mature/adult enough to consume or purchase alcohol, yet they're mature enough to join the military and buy cigarettes.

Basing maturity on the number of birthdays someone has had makes no sense to me (this isn't geared toward you, I'm just saying in general).
