Found old safe in my basement

Good morning "safe" friends. I am hoping that the locksmith will call me and tell me he will come out either tonight or tomorrow. Anytime tomorrow my husband would be home. But if he doesn't, I am gonna have to resort to other measures. I am just losing my mind wanting it to be OPEN!

I am going to call my brother tonight and tell him if we do end up cutting it open (if that will work), if there is a way for him to do it carefully so that it can be put back together and refurbed somehow? Not sure if that is a possiblity but I hate the thought of ruining a piece of history but my patience level is just so horrible, I have to get it open.

Even if we could refurb, the safe is so darn heavy, I am not sure how we would get it upstairs and then if the floors in our old house would handle it. We will be moving when the house sells, but we are going to an old farm house that is even older to refurb that so I don't know as if I really can move it/keep it. Frustrating.......

If I hear anything I will definately post !

Cool Dr. Pepper can!!!!!!!!! My husband used to survey and he would find all sorts of things out in the woods. We are Mountain Dew drinkers so he is pretty pround of two old mountain dew bottles that he has found. I don't have any pics to post of them but they are really cool. One has old mountain man on it.

I SURE hope this doesn't turn into the neighbor thread that never resolved!!!!

I want to know what's in that safe MORE than I wanted to know what they were doing with the white bags!!!!

I am so glad I missed that neighbor thread. That would have drove me nuts.

wow, how exciting! Can't wait to hear what you find. I love old things, that safe is beatiful! We live in a 100 year old house but I have never found anything interesting yet.

I was 7 pages into this thread and never realized you were from (near) Rochester until this post! This is now so much more interesting to me! I'm dying to know what's in it!

Hi neighbor! I just love finding people on here that are close! :goodvibes

Okay, now my whole family is involved!! My kids and dh made me check this thread before they all left for school and work!!

What I want to know is how you could have something that big in your house for 4 years and NEVER notice!!

Dh told me today that when his family bought an old building in the '70's that used to be a hotel before it was abandoned for many years, they found many things in it. One was a safe just like that. They called in locksmiths to open it and had everyone gathered around to watch. Not a thing in it!

I'm thinking this thing has to have something good in it. Too many of us have too much invested in SAFE WATCH 2008!!!!!!

I love when people find fun things like the Dr. P can! I hope the safe at least has fun stuff, if not valuable for you to dig through!

I just checked and there are over 9,000 views of this thread! :scared1: Better open that thing soon or the server may crash!!!:lmao:

I'm subbing too! This is so exciting. Who knows, maybe there will be a white paper bag inside and we can solve two mysteries at once. :rotfl:

 How about we all submit combinations. Whoever guesses the right one gets a share of the contents. This can keep them occupied until the locksmith can get there.

My guess is 26-11-34.

My guess is 24-12-8. Don't they have safe crackers with stethoscopes around anymore?

9,000 views??????? Are you kidding me???? That is amazing. Jeez, now I really hope there is something in it for all you guys.......... I hate to let that many people down, what an awful post that would be to type..........

I think it is so neat that 'whole families' are interested in the safe!

Please oh please let there be SOMETHING in this thing!

This is even better than Capones Safe that Geraldo Rivera managed to fill a couple of hours of network TV only to find Dust.... :lmao:

Sadly I remember watching that show :rotfl:

Me too!!! Sadly that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back!!!

Even if there's nothing of VALUE in the safe, it would be cool if there was historical stuff, like newspapers from a by-gone era, or something else in there. It would also be cool if there was millions of dollars in there!!! At this point I'd take anything (as long as it isn't a white paper bag!!)

It is a great looking safe, from an antique dealer's point of view, now you have peaked my interest too..

I cannot wait to know what is in it.......what if it is something good.. even old papers are saleable.....like old stocks etc..

This is exciting.

When you do get it open, can you post it as an update on your title and let us know what page it is on... or edit your original post.....just trying make it easy to find out when you do..

Ok here we go with some answers, maybe:

1) resemble acorns
2) couldn't see color very well but he said that he could see like gears because they would spin when he turned the dial to the right but turn to left they didn't move.
3. on dial around the outer part circle of dial it says Sargent & Greenleaf Rochester NY and in the center of that is has the following patent dates listed
sept 18, 1860
jan 9, 1866
aug 28, 1866
july 14, 1857
EX 7 years (????? not sure what that means)
july 14, 1871

on door handle there is the number 19226

4. There is no wood outer casing. It is all metal. We are not sure if it is water stain, paint or what on it We haven't got it out yet so we cant look behind or underneath yet at this point

There is some more info for you guys to feed off of for a little bit until we can crack it open!!!

Have a good night and dream of big money, big money, big money!!!! Or diamonds, sapphires, rubies, stocks, etc..... disney dollars..............
Thanks for the info, will have DH look at it, he can tell you if its a GOOD one or not!;) (I have 4 OLD safes in my house).
