Found old safe in my basement

Aaack. Just noticed the time. Will keep looking at work tonight-won't be able to log-in till tomorrow, though.

If this thread gets too long-will someone please make sure it doesn't unravel (tie a knot to a new one-ya'll know what I mean.).:thumbsup2

Just a quick post to let you all know that there are acorns on the hinges! I know some of you had asked about it. That is all for now until this weekend!!! Going to bed but I will be back on tomorrow !!!

Ok, im subbing on but i have to say that the last time I subbed on to a thread that held me in suspense the OP of that thread never did come back and tell me what her neighbors were up to! Please OP of this thread keep us posted to the end!:worship:

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking!!!!! Subbing!! This is SO exciting!!!

The safe itself may be worth something, I would NOT have the door broken off in anyway, just have someone like a Locksmith open it, and My DH may be interested in it.

I have my husband down in the basement right now trying to answer some of the questions that were asked earlier. I say they are acorns, but they just look like a finial, maybe acorn shape. They are smooth, not etched like an acorn though.

I had to go to a b-day party tonight and I was telling all of the people there and the excitement it created!! I think I could have had 15 people come home with me and help me demolish the thing!! Guys were offering to buy some beer/wine and snacks and stay till the damage was done!!! Too funny. As soon as my husband comes back upstairs with some anwers (hopefully) I will post.

I have been going through all of my research & I have some ?'s that will sound VERY strange to you-I realize this but it has to do with dating/time period & the type of lock. (Non-tumblers that have not been taken care of will tend to sound like a broken rolling tumbler-but they are handled very differently.)
1.)On the door hinges, is there a little acorn or do they just look like old hinges? (Earlier pieces did not have the acorns.)
2.)May need a flashlight for this next question. When you look through the attempted drill-in, do you see metal? If so, is it dark grey (blackish) and kinda rough feeling looking? Shiny black? Or a dull flat grayish color? (Has to do with the type of metal plating that was used as a lock stabilizer).
3.)On the lock, itself-can you see numbers/number letter combo or a manufacturer (Yale is WWII era, for example)
4.) The wood outer casing is a give-away that it is prior to WWII. Is there anyway to see under the safe or behind it (lower corner (usually left), right above the molding to see if there is a very small set of numbers?

You have made my day.

Ok here we go with some answers, maybe:

1) resemble acorns
2) couldn't see color very well but he said that he could see like gears because they would spin when he turned the dial to the right but turn to left they didn't move.
3. on dial around the outer part circle of dial it says Sargent & Greenleaf Rochester NY and in the center of that is has the following patent dates listed
sept 18, 1860
jan 9, 1866
aug 28, 1866
july 14, 1857
EX 7 years (????? not sure what that means)
july 14, 1871

on door handle there is the number 19226

4. There is no wood outer casing. It is all metal. We are not sure if it is water stain, paint or what on it We haven't got it out yet so we cant look behind or underneath yet at this point

There is some more info for you guys to feed off of for a little bit until we can crack it open!!!

Have a good night and dream of big money, big money, big money!!!! Or diamonds, sapphires, rubies, stocks, etc..... disney dollars..............

Hehe we are excited here too, my dh even wanted me to check the thread before he layed down. Keep us posted!!!!

This is so cool!! I am looking forward to hearing what might be in the safe or even what the safe might be worth if there is nothing in it.
I hope it brings you money for a LIFETIME supply of trips to Disney!!

I hope it's full of gold! :thumbsup2 How cool would that be...:cool2:

OP, if you already said so I must have missed the post, did you find anyone to open it?

Sargent and Greenleaf are manufacturers of high-security locks. Many safe manufacturers get the actual lock mechanisms from S&G.

Wow! I take DD on a homeschool field trip and all sorts of excitement happens. Add me to the list of interested observers and those who are dying to know what's inside, but say don't damage the safe. :thumbsup2

Wow look at the excitement I'm missing over here on the community board! :rotfl:

OP - The safe is beautiful. I would totally refinish it and decorate with it in my room-livingroom or dining room maybe??? When I saw the picture it reminded me of one my dad purchased and kept in his basement. We're not on the best terms in my family (long story, but I've spent lots of time in therapy and foster care growing up and the last time I saw my dad is when I got married almost 4 years ago and has yet to see either of his grandsons since my wedding), but it got me thinking, what the heck was the combination? :rotfl2: Not that there's anything in it that I want or is worth anything, but I would love the safe itself.

I leave for Disney next Wednesday so I need to know what's in there before noon next Wednesday-no pressure or anything! :rolleyes1

Wow! That is neat!!

I would have made two phone calls right off the bat...

1) A locksmith

2) The Antiques Roadshow. Maybe they would visit your house since you obviously can't get it on the road! :)

Will be watching. :3dglasses

I'm leaving on vacation on Saturday. Hope I can find out what is in there before then.:rotfl2:

I subscribed too and I dont think I've ever done that. It's a gorgeous safe! Can't wait to hear whats inside and hopefully it doesn't have to get destroyed to find out!

Checking back in and just read all the posts. I hope the locksmith gets a job out near you soon!!! I don't think I can wait very long. This is so exciting!
