Found old safe in my basement

Fantastic, I'll supply the tooth floss, and magnifying glass. :lmao:

That show was awesome. I was completely in love with MacGyver:lmao: And still halfway in love with Richard Dean Anderson all these years later. Nobody tell my DH:rotfl:

Feel free to come visit me. RDA has a cabin up here so he's frequently seen around town. He's very much in disguise though so recognizing him can be a bit of a challenge. LOL

I'm still in for SafeWatch2008. Are there any bumper stickers? ;)

No kidding! :confused3 :hyper:

OP - this is getting ridiculous. We are going to need your address. There are a few of us who have dynamite, crow bars, night vision goggles, one of those snake camera things, stethescopes, and many other tools ready to go. Just give us the word.

If we get this open tonight, we can probably book for lets say a December cruise? Is that good for everyone? :upsidedow

I have a stethoscope......but everyone keeps talking about a locksmith.

Locksmith schlocksmith...........my DH works with dynamite on a daily basis. :woohoo:

And no cruise for me thanks, I'm just in it for the history/antiqueness of it.

Me too!!! Sadly that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back!!!

Even if there's nothing of VALUE in the safe, it would be cool if there was historical stuff, like newspapers from a by-gone era, or something else in there. It would also be cool if there was millions of dollars in there!!! At this point I'd take anything (as long as it isn't a white paper bag!!)

My thoughts were that there's nothing in the safe...but maybe old paperwork yes?

On the other hand did they ever find D. B. Coopers stash? Seriously! :scared1:

I'm coming to visit!! I've been watching him since he was Dr. Jeff Weber on General Hospital. :lovestruc My grandmother used to have me watch with her after school to keep her company. Oh the things that woman would say!

Put me down for 2 of those stickers. And a lawn sign.

Good morning "safe" friends. I am hoping that the locksmith will call me and tell me he will come out either tonight or tomorrow. Anytime tomorrow my husband would be home. But if he doesn't, I am gonna have to resort to other measures. I am just losing my mind wanting it to be OPEN!

I am going to call my brother tonight and tell him if we do end up cutting it open (if that will work), if there is a way for him to do it carefully so that it can be put back together and refurbed somehow? Not sure if that is a possiblity but I hate the thought of ruining a piece of history but my patience level is just so horrible, I have to get it open.

Even if we could refurb, the safe is so darn heavy, I am not sure how we would get it upstairs and then if the floors in our old house would handle it. We will be moving when the house sells, but we are going to an old farm house that is even older to refurb that so I don't know as if I really can move it/keep it. Frustrating.......

If I hear anything I will definately post !

If you do decide to cut it open (which I have no idea if it's possible to do or not?) this is what I'd do. I'd save the door or the entire front of it if I could. If the door gets ruined you could STILL rescue the twisted border and use it in a variety of neat ways in your home!
DH and I are big big fans of reusing architectural details and this definitely fits into that scope IMHO.

The safe door could make a really cool coffee table top, edged with the border and maybe using the feet from the original safe. I'd even keep the spinning lock for conversations sake! LOL

The door would be neat just leaned against a wall somewhere, fixed in place though so it wouldn't fall down and crush someone. EEK!!

The twisty frame you could use to frame an old piece of plate mirror or to frame a picture. It could be cut into smaller pieces and used at the top of doorways or windows! There are soooooo many ideas if you have to piece the item out.

Cathryn and I are almost packed and ready for the cruise......but it would be helpful to know just how much the contents are worth. I mean really, is it enough for a 7-day or are we going to have to settle for just a 3 or 4-day ? It makes a huge difference in the packing process and time is a wastin' !!:rotfl:

Right, right exactly. How many undies will I need?

You are so sweet to upgrade to a Land and Sea Package ! Well, personally, I've never really stayed onsite, except for the Shades of Green, so I'm up for anything. If I had to choose, I think I'd like to try the Animal Kingdom Lodge.:woohoo: But, really - your safe, your choice ! :thumbsup2

She's upgraded us to a land & sea package??? YAY!! :yay: I know you want the OP to choose the resort, but I feel without our support and brilliant idea's - she wouldnt be where she is at now... so I'm voting. GF! :woohoo:

I would vote for the Grand Floridian!!

But if you wanted to keep the theming up - you could do the Poly since this is sort of like a treasure hunt and I always feel like I could go on a treasure hunt at the Poly!!

I'm with DVCBelle!!!!! GF = 1st pick! Poly = 2nd pick. :dance3:

I thought of another idea!

Buy these:

MovingMen-S.jpg

Then slide it to my house. I'll get that sucker open. pirate:

Hey I have those. I have some night vision goggles too. I'll help, OP - just pm me your address. :rotfl:

At this point, we are all waiting on the OP's address. We can all pack, and head there. Please bring your cruise wear along, as we shall be staying with the OP until departure date.

Op?!?!? Come on!!! :confused3

Morning (afternoon? night shift thing)
Man, jump off for a few hrs. and we go from a free WDW trip for a few of us to Walt's suite- & now, a Land/Sea pkg. for everyone :lmao: You're a hoot!!!

Update-called in some cavalry. Right now, there are 7 of us "safe geeks" looking into this. Will keep you informed on finds.:thumbsup2
Someone asked about the patent info (sorry forget who) dates listed on lock. The first date of Sept. 18, 1860 is when the patent for that combination lock was filed. The 1866 dates are when improvements to the original patent were filed. Exp. 7yrs-the patent was set to expire 7 years from July 14, 1871 (so 1878). An expired patent means no royalties to the inventor, and the item may be copied and sold at will by anyone. Those dates unfortuntly can not date the safe (other than it was later than 1878)-they date the combo lock.

Am still looking.
As for moving it-buddy suggests duct tape on floor with a spray of wd40 on tape and wheels (if on it).
What is taking so long on the info: Baum filed a bunch of patents, most of his safes were smaller (about the size of a bed side table), the majority of the larger ones were double door safes used in post offices and banks.
This one is HUGE and is a SINGLE door. It doesn't mean anything value wise-but to us "safe geeks" this is...drool time.

And for those of you who are worried that the saga will end with the opening of the door....the top safety deposit drawer is usually either combo/key.
(EVil laugh, hands rubbing together):lmao:

I He says there isn't a high need for safe openers and lot of them are busy doing other things and just aren't interested.

Perhaps your local prison has a work-release program?
:lmao:

The suspense is killing me!! And when you do get it open, could you please edit your title to say: UPDATE ???

Thanks! :)

OK, twist my arm......Grand Floridian it is !!! All of this pressure is killing me ! I think I must take off for a while and just relax. With all of the packing and whatnot, I'm just plain pooped !:faint:

I'll check back in later and see just how much closer we are to finding out the contents of our mystery safe.....oh, look at me "our" mystery safe !:rotfl2:

Gee, one more thought before I go.....we've now upgraded to a 14-day land and sea with what looks like a stay at the GF......perhaps, just perhaps, we could rotate some nights at the Castle suite....one night each just to make it fair OR we could, out of the goodness of our hearts let the actual safe owner, (and by actual, I mean physical!) stay there whilst we slum it at the GF ! Just a thought.........later all !

I can't beleive that it is the #1 find on google........... Amazing.

Easy girlfriend!! I know we all are about to pee our pants here, but whoa!! Take a deep breath........... But I must admit, you guys have made this so much more fun and it wouldn't be nearly this exciting without you guys, so guess what, you all can pick the resort. I have only ever stayed at the Animal Kingdom and Pop Century on site, so something new would be nice for me, but I am flexible :goodvibes

I have always wanted to get those little furniture movers by the way...

Oh my gosh, you had me laughing out loud with the last line........ Well, if we get the door open, my brother/locksmith isnt going anywhere until that gets opened too. I guarantee that.

It is raining here so my husband cant work outside. Just called him and ordered him to get out the duct tape and WD40 and get moving that safe out so we can get at it. He agreed so he is attempting that right now.

I think if there is millions, and we do actually get to go on our little trip..... I bet Oprah will want us on her show........ Oh what is in store for us???!!!:rotfl2:

What was the deadline for subscribing to this thread to be in on the gold bullions that are in the safe? Did I miss it???
