? for those who use ziploc bags to pack

I want to pack my children's clothes in the gallon size ziplock bags (one outfit for each day) and I was wondering if the clothes get very wrinkled when you pack this way. When I squeeze the air out of the bags, its looks like the clothes are all squished and I really don't want to be ironing on my vacation!!

Well, maybe I did it incorrectly; but my clothes seemed more wrinkled than usual. I was bummed. I put all our stuff in gallon ziplocks on our last trip down. But, it's kinda still a good idea only because of the very big possibility of someone going though our bags and this way it stayed neat. Since I can't lock the bags anymore, it seemed like a good idea. I'll probably do it again in May when we go down; only because I can't lock the bags. I'll deal with any wrinkles when I get there. I always unpack first thing, so most of the wrinkles fall out quickly. I think most people do it for space in their bags and just in case their bags get searched. It will save you a little space too!

for the last trip in november. The clothes were shorts, shirt, underwear and a pair of socks. I sort of rolled everything up together, put in the bag, squished and sealed. Can't say I noticed alot of wrinkles---sure got rid of the "Mom, what should I wear?" question every morning. Good luck!

As long as you roll the clothes, you shouldn't have too many wrinkles.

Downy Wrinkle Releaser works great, but it's a bit expensive. Great for vacation, though. We brought it on our DCL cruise last summer, and it smoothed out all the wrinkles in my linen shirts and skirt.

When I took our 4 yo granddaughter last year, her mom put each outfit in a baggie including her socks and hair thingies. I can't tell you how helpful this was! She was able to get herself dressed with no help from me, and the clothes weren't wrinkled even though they were folded, not rolled. The bags weren't "overly" squeezed - just nice and flat.

I did this last year for the first time and absolutely loved it! It really saves a lot of space if you can find a size just big enough for your child's clothes. I loved just giving my son a bag! I don't remember my kids being too wrinkly, but I might just not have been bothered by that.

Hefty makes a 2.5 gal ziplock bag that I use when we travel. It's nice and big and I haven't noticed alot of wrinkles.

I decided last summer to try the ziploc baggie idea for our clothes to help space in our suitcase. It worked well. I was able to squeeze out the air and therefore pack more.

However...

When we got to the hotel and I opened the suitcase (there was an airport slip tie securing the suitcase), every single one of the baggies had a knife cut. There was a slip of paper in the suitcase stating that it had been opened for inspection.

Of course this made the repacking using the same baggies useless. I know that they check the luggage more thoroughly and was not upset as the clothes were not cut or damaged and I prefer safety vs. bombs. I went ahead and bought another box of baggies for the trip home.

When I got home, the same scenario had occurred with the knife cuts. I don't know if I was just selected at random or if I had packed too much so the scanners couldn't see clear and/or if they just didn't like baggies.

I have decided not to do the baggie idea again as it was just a waste of money for me and glad I did not use the more expensive ones advertised on TV.

why did you repack in bags on the way home??

I'm thinking of doing this with DD's clothes for our upcoming trip, I plan on doing laundry on the last morning of our stay onsite before our next half, and plan on repacking the bags again before we move...

I figure I'll just keep their pants/sweatshirts out of the bags as we may or may not need them.

We are driving though, so the airline searches wont affect us

thanks for that tip though...on DH's last business trip, his brother bag had one of those notes in it on arrival, and DH got one on his return trip

I have used the zip-loc idea the last 2 trips and I will always pack this way!!!!!
I had no problems with security and they did open 2 of our 5 bags, however they did not cut our zip-locks.
I work retail so I am used to folding clothes extremely neatly for my picky customers (LOL!)
I found that if I folded the clothes while they were fresh from the laundry, on a FLAT surface, I never had a problem with wrinkles. Just smooth out the clothes and take a little extra time in folding. I then slid them in the zip-loc and pressed the air out and zipped them up.(My kids clothes are all cotton or a 40/60 cotton/poly blend). Voila! Very few wrinkles!
My sundresses that were silk, I folded with tissue paper as that helps with wrinkles in fine fabrics.

I re-use the bags on the way home to put the dirty clothes in. That way your suitcase stays fresh! I buy my bags at ALDI (a very low-price grocery store in the midwest) Wal-Mart brand bags aren't too expensive either and it is definitely worth the $5 I spend so that everyone can dress themselves in COORDINATING clothes and hair accessories!

I found 2 gallon size zip locs at our local Walmart Supercenter...I have not seen the 2.5 gallon anywhere. Also...I bought the Downy Wrinkle Releaser and it works great! So I will be bringing that along just in case. Thanks to everyone who replied!

Most things stayed the way they would have been in the luggage without the ziplocs. I tend to begin packing early, and then repack a lot, so that's probably why I had extra wrinkes. My clothes had had enough already! The ziplocs were great for keeping everything extra organized, expecially since I shared part of my bag with DD. I even put the ziplocs into space bags. This may appear like I am a very organized and anal person, but I am exactly the opposite. The space bags helped divide the clothes for the three purposes we had in FL on our last trip 1) Semi casual clothes for the trip to the main office, 2) casual clothes for the family visit, and 3) Lots of Disney clothes!
Looking forward to next trip-only Disney clothes invited!

I've been reusing the 2½ gallon bags for over four years. I store them in the suitcase when I unpack at home.

Take 1 part water to 1 part fabric sftner and give it a good shck in a spray bottel. It worls just as wel (even gives a refreshing just out of the dryer smell) and cost a lot less.
