I don't pack my clothes in the zip lock to avoid the wrinkles, just underwear, socks, swimsuits and toiletries (but I also don't have kids). I figure this way if they open my bag nobody will be rifling through my undies and they won't have too open my make-up bag etc. I resuse the bags on the way home for the dirties and wets, refolding and packing the rest of the clothes as if they were clean. Also, the bags keep lotions, saline, etc from leaking onto everything else.

We always pack in zip loc baggies. I have not packed out fits this way, But rather one baggie socks, undies, and all the millon incidentals.
I was surprised at the poster that had everything slit open.. Last December, I had one bag of junk, Medicines just in case, Light necklaces, Batteries film. God a whole bag of stuff. I even had the pump for my toddlers air mattress in there. ( So there were wires abound) Oh yes, I also had a mini vaporizer also wired. We were actually laughing about it, And I had said to my brother if they didn't open a bag with all those cords I wasn't flying. Thank goodness they indeed saw it and opened it, At Providence when they open your bag, they pull you to the side while they open it. The woman was very gruff and she said Who's bag is this????? I was very nervous, said It was me. And she said, I just want to say Thank you. I am thinking For?? what.......And she smiled and said for making my job a little easier today. It was much easier for her to pull out the bags and be able to see what she was looking at. I would think that would normaly be the case. It does seem alot easier to go through.

I have alway packed my kids clothes in the ziplock bags. My reason is that I like to dress my kids in similar outfits (either color or style) because it is much easier to keep track of them in the parks. I lay out the outfits that I plan to bring for each of them (3 ds's 8,6,16mths). I label the bags A thru Z or whatever. That way in the morning I had each of them the same lettered bag and they are coordinated and dressed with no fuss. Each bag has shirt, shorts, socks and underwear. I haven't noticed wrinkles, but to be truthful they would have wrinkles within minutes of getting dressed anyway.

I love packing this way for my 3 boys! I just "deal" them each a baggie, tell them to get dressed and voila!! They have everything they need, don't have to search for socks, undies and their clothes match--a big feat for boys to accomplish! But they're boys--they're wrinkled before we leave the hotel, but so am I...who cares, we're at Disney!!!

I've never used them for outfits either but I have used the wrinkle release which I bought on my grocery stop provided by the limo service(so i didn't have to pack it) and it works well!


I think I'll try the baggies, I'll report back later.

I always pack in ziplock bags. The gallon size work great for little ones, and I use the 2 or 2.5 gallon size for myself and my bug kids.

Another trick: I pack one carryon (since we travel with 5, we always have extra carryons from the kids, since they just carry a backpack) with a change of clothing for each person in their own ziplock (shorts or pants, depending on season, t-shirt, socks and underwear). I pack a second ziplock with a swim suit and pajamas, per person. Another ziplock carries our toothbrushes and my contact lenses stuff. If our luggage is delayed, it gives us what we need to get by. We just put this bag up in the overhead compartment.

A Funny Story: During our last trip to WDW, in April 2001, I packed all the kids clothes in ziplocks. DD and DD chose their clothes each day by looking at the t-shirt and choosing what they wanted. My youngest DS, who had just turned 4, chose his clothes everyday by his underwear (Lion King, Superheroes, Pokemon, etc) I was much amused.

Our past trip in Feb I packed only my clothes in the zip-loc bags cause I didn't want anyone touching my underwears..my husband said don't pack my clothes in those bags..ok..we get to the hotel and guess what they opened my suitcase slit the bags and his was untouched!! will try them again in 3 weeks..see what happens then..marianne

I've been doing this for my son whenever we go anywhere. I love it! And now my DH loves it! He can grab an outfit and get DS dressed in no time!

We are going to WDW in May and I will do this for my son and me, for sure...DH can do what he wants when he packs. I'm going today to get the bigger gallon size bags. So far, Walmart and Target have not had them...(though I've found them at Walmart before...maybe they were just out?) I'm trying KMart today.

This IS a great way to pack and keep organized. I hope they don't knife my baggies though. Oh well, if it happens, atleast I won't be surprised now, after reading this.

My DD (4) recently went on a week long trip to Grandma's house with an overnight at my sister's appartment in the city. That was the first time that I used ziplock bags to pack outfits in (after reading about it here).

It was great for two reasons:

She was able to pack her own suitcase. I just counted out the right number of bags and told her to put a whole outfit in each one. I got busy doing other things and when I came back it was done (I did double check each bag just to make sure nothing was missing).

When it was time for the overnight with my sister it was very easy to just grab one of the bags instead of having to lug her big suitcase on the train.

I plan to pack her clothes this way from now on.

Not mine though. I mix and match too much.

This is the best suggestion I've ever gotten on any of these boards. I have three daughters and getting dressed on vacation can be a chore...finding the right shirt for the shorts and then there's the whole socks and hairbow issue.

Using bags I can easily tell if we've packed what they need; I'm a real overpacker and this has cut that way down. And they can get dressed quickly by themselves without and arguing.

It's wonderful. We always pack this way now.

One hint...the name brand bags hold up better than the store generics. I bought the Walmart brand one time to save money and the seals tore apart while we put our clothes in them.

I"m confused - why does the airport slit the bags? Why can't they just open them via the ziplock?? I would like to be able to reuse the bags on our return trip for wet things, dirties, etc.

I use the gallon size bags when I pack my daughter up for camp and will be using them when we go to WDW and they worked great!

One more hint - we bring 2 big suitcases for DH, me and DS (8). I make sure that each suitcase has at least one outfit for each of us. That way, if one of the suitcases gets lost we will at least have a change of clothes.

The best way to prevent wrinkling in baggies is to roll the clothes instead of folding them. Also, rolling them saves a little more space than trying to flatten them out.

My zip lock bags have never been slit. I would make sure you only have clothing in there.

Also, the other issue is weight. If you stuff the suitcase FULL of ziplocked bags it could go over weight. I would also imagine that if they are really packed in there, the scanner might have trouble seeing thru them.

I actually use compression space bags, especially for winter travel. In dozens of flights I've never had anyone split them, but I laminated the receipt for what I paid for them, and I keep it in the outer pocket of my bag. At $5 per bag, if they take a knife to them, I'm filing a claim.

The space bags, b/c they stay flat, can go through the x-ray independently. When there have been issues, they pass the bags through one at a time, and with the density reduced, there is apparently no problem.

I don't do it so much for organization, but for space. We like to keep the number of bags to a minimum. (With a space duffel in the case in case of weight issues.) As to wrinkles, we do carry a small bottle of wrinkle release spray, but the problem is mostly solved by taking the time to unpack when we arrive, immediately hanging up the wrinkle-prone things.
