Is there a museum or recreation of a colonial settlement in your area? If so, what is it called? Have you ever visited it?

Here in Maryland we have St. Marys City. http://www.stmaryscity.org/Visit.html I visited years ago and am planning to take DSs this week so the older one can gather research for his project.

There's so much history here in PA, but I don't know of any sites pertaining to a Colonial re-creation as you are asking. We have Valley Forge (battlefield from the Revolution) outside Philadelphia, Gettysburg (battlefield from the Civil War) and more that don't immediately come to mind.

Oh and Indepence Hall and the home of Betsy Ross in Philadelphia

We have Jamestown but that's pre-Colonial.

Williamsburg is another one.

There might be stuff in Savannah, but I have never been to it specifically. There's more Civil War stuff here anyway.

In CT we have Mystic Seaport, and Mystic Aquarium. The Seaport is a recreation of seaports when the tall ships were king. They have quite a few large ships as well as the village where you can find workers doing all the things that they used to do long ago to build the ships and keep the town going. I used to take the kids there but haven't been in years. I do enjoy the shopping in Mystic village near the aquarium still.
MA has Sturbridge Village. It is a recreation of a village long ago. They have people dressed in authentic garb doing things like shoeing horses, and running the town. My kids were interested in the schoolhouse and the toys the kids used to play with. We had to buy the tops, jacobs ladder, etc. When my son was in 7th grade he had to do a paper on people during this era and we took the trip so he could see what it was like. He got an A. Again, I haven't been there in years since my boys are now 27, 24 and 21. Peggie

Old Bethpage Village -- actually 19th Century, not colonial, but still interesting.

there are some lovely colonial homes in Huntington, the town has preserved them as museums.

In Leesburg, Virginia they hold August Court Days every August. The Colonial-era street fair recreates the August session of court in the 1700’s, when county citizens gathered in town to buy, sell and talk. The modern version includes more than 200 re-enactors, mock trials, militia members and backwoodsmen, Scottish Army troops, live music, crafts and foods. They actual take court cases from that time period and try them. Pretty cool.

Wow, a lot of people listed places I would have.

Old Bethpage was a school trip every year when I still lived on LI.
Dad took my family to Fort Ticonderoga a few times.

I've been to Monticello and Mount Vernon. Near me, about an hour away now is Fort Frederick, an actual fort from the Revolutionary era. If you're travelling on I 70, it's at exit 9, about 20 miles west of Hagerstown. Probably a good place to let the kids experience history.

I'm about 10 miles from Old Deerfield in Western Mass. It's an old main street with houses that are set up from the 18th century that are open to the public for tours. Very neat as I always enjoyed the colonial period in history. It was the sight of a major Indian attack back in the 1700's.

If anyone's interested in American Indian history, New Echota Historical Site in northwest Georgia is right off I-75. Not colonial, but early 19th century, it was the last capital of the Cherokee Nation before the Trail of Tears.

I grew up very near the site and local groups have worked hard to recreate it.
