I flew alone with DS (age 6) in February. I was a little nervous about getting through security, usually it is DH, myself, an DS. An adult goes first, DS in the middle, and an adult goes last. This time I did not have that option.

I sent DS through first, with the instructions he was to stop right after the metal detector, and wait for me.

The TSA employee on the other side of the detector was GREAT. She said to DS, "OK, you passed, now you come right over here, and stand with me til Mom gets through, OK? Then you can go grab your backpack off the belt."

To all, you are most welcome. My DW and i had some concerns with children and security and the info found on the TSA site really put to rest some of our concerns. I too found some tips that i was not aware of. Anyone who plans on flying with children should by all means visit the TSA site.

One thing they don't mention: metal. Be careful not to dress your little ones for the flight in clothing that has lots of metal; overalls, for instance, or zip-off pants w/ metal zippers in the legs. You want to minimize the chances that the detector will beep and frighten them.

Also, do yourself a favor and do a pocket check before you leave your car; make sure any metal is out of their pockets before you approach security. (Little boys have been known to not understand that prized pocket knives are forbidden; check in time to leave them at home or in the car, so that they do not get confiscated.)

For those of you who have GameBoy aged kids: no GameBoy in the pockets and no GameBoy games!!!!!! DS was totally freaked out last year while going thru LAX security. He was pulled aside by 2 security guys and I was asked to stand by as they patted him down. He had 3 Gameboy games in his pocket.
A valuable lesson.

thanks for that, twins are taking their game boys, so what should I do with them, guess put them in their carrier OR have them in their hands with a game in it and the other games in the carry on..Thanks again

I would put them in any carry-on bags you may have and let them go through the x-ray. At least if there is a question as to what they are when they go through the machines, it won't bother the kids as much.

Wow thanks for the tip about the gameboy thing.We are going to be bringing ours on our trip.I guess i will have them put them in the carry on baggage.
I have a notepad here by my computer and everytime i learn something new i write it down.

Just put the GameBoy and any loose games in the dish that you send thru normally with change or watches. The machine doesn't seem to hurt anything - we have flown 12 times since the LAX event and this is how we now handle the GameBoy.
