Florida Gator football lovers: A perspective on your program

I think Spikes made the right decision himself and that shows that maybe he's not such a bad person and just got caught up in the heat of the moment.

I think it shows that the original suspension was too light.

I have nothing for or against any of the team mentioned in this thread, but Florida fans in this thread come off as extremely arrogant. The comment about Sam Bradford is bizarre.

Yeah, but to actually choose to punish himself more than he was originally going to be punished....that says decent guy to me.
And I agree that I didn't quite understand the comment about Bradford. I've always said that if I had a son/brother/etc. who was a college football player and had a chance to come out early to the NFL, I'd advise him to do so. You can always go back and finish your degree but you could miss out on an NFL career (even if it's a short one, it would be enough money to help you out if you invested it well) by going back for another season and having a career-ending injury. Of course, I'm glad Tebow came back but it's not what I would have advised.

you know what a bye week is right? well FL has had one.

Bye weeks are for sissies.

lillygator, if you haven't figured it out by now, I'm just messing with you.:rotfl:

Look, everyone knows Florida has a great football team (although, as a state, Florida is 6 times bigger population-wise, than Iowa, but that's a different topic).

I think Iowa has a good football team this year too. Are we a "great" football team? I dunno.

I do know that we are for sure an entertaining team. There are not many teams that can withstand having 4 interceptions in the 3rd quarter alone, and be down by 10 points going into the 4th quarter, and go on to score 4 straight touchdowns, like we did last week against Indiana.

Or blocking a last second field goal - TWICE - in our first game against Northern Iowa.

Or scoring a game-winning touchdown in the last 2 seconds of the game against Michigan State.

If that's not exciting, I don't know what is. :thumbsup2

With the help of the B10 refs, they just might go all the way.....lord knows they helps them beat IU last week.

Nah, we tried to help IU as much as we could.

After all, Stanzi (Iowa quarterback) threw the ball to you guys 4 times in the 3rd quarter!

hwo do they come off as arrogant?

true, but that still hard to fathom reversal of the IU TD (call on the field should have stood as the "video evidence" didn't prove much either way) and following missed FG were a big momentum changer. Especially since IU believe that was the drive that followed up the 95 YD TD return on the pinball interception (never seen an INT like that before).

IU's D took the 4th qtr off and it cost him....but the B10 refs helped too. Who knows how the game playes out if the TD stands (as it should have).

Hey, I don't mind being a redneck and DBF is definitely one. He's the one who got me into the Gators. His brother went there and he's got a whole family of Gator fans. He even bought his Jeep in Gator blue and has it decorated with Gators decals. But AFAIK neither one of us has ever been called stuck up (although I did go to a private all-girls' high school.)

He sounds like a catch!!

And you know, if being a Gator fan makes me a redneck, then so be it.

when you go through the 24 arrests/charges/whatever and list each by name and what the charges were and the results...

when you never admit that maybe, just maybe Spikes wasn't right in what he did. Yep, it happens. But he got caught and it was blatant and it made national press.

(ftr, I think there should be a similar outcry against Ortman from Michigan who sucker-punced the Illinois guy in his "midsection". No, I'm not a Michigan fan).

We all think that fingers are unfairly pointed at our team, but just like there are bad fans for every school (and there are!), there are some bad apples for every team. Hopefully, their time in college football will teach them acceptable behavior, but it doesn't always happen. for all of our teams.

I don't think that b/c he asked for an additional 1/2 game suspension that makes him a good guy. I think the overwhelming negative press had an influence. A PR person, an AD, a coach probably pulled him aside and told him that Meyer can't change his mind, but maybe the kid could get some better press if he raises his hand, says he did it and takes additional punishment. Doesn't make Meyer look bad (or worse I should say, he already looks bad), and maybe helps the kid a little. Hopefully, he is truely (sp?) contrite.

(also ftr, I think Tebow is a upstanding kid. I also applaud Bradford for his actions. they aren't mutually exclusive.)

I do have a couple of questions. Did the guy who was eye gouging Tebow get punished at all and did the guy that I saw rip the helmet off of the Florida player (I think the Florida player was actually Spikes) get punished at all? If not, then I would think the UGA coach actually looks a lot worse than Meyer.

Why are you asking that question ? To point out how 'right' you are ? That isn't the point.

The difference is that Spikes made national media and youtube, etc. If you are so outraged, send a youtube video to a national sportswriter (or even a Gainesville one) and I'm sure they would be happy to make an issue of that also.

He made national media and youtube specifically because he is a Gator and there's so much hatred for them among other fans. My point, though, was actually that Urban Meyer at least chose to punish him and the Georgia coach may not have even bothered punishing his players.

who says there is 'hatred' ? There is 'hatred' for every team. Of course they are more of a target - they are winning. that is reality. You want to be irrelevant... start losing.

We don't know that the Georgia team did anything wrong other than your word (anecdotal) and Tebow claiming that everyone does it. I rescind my earlier praise of Tebow. For him to defend Spikes is wrong.

Just admit that he screwed up and got caught and has to pay the penalty. Life will be much easier than if you keep defending him until you are blue in the face. get it ? blue! ha!

Well, if you watched the game you know that at least the ripping off of the helmet happened. The guy who did it was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct at the time. I didn't know about the eye gouging of Tebow but someone else mentioned it on the thread.
I admit that he screwed up but I also say he did the right thing by suspending himself for the entire game when Meyer only suspended him for one half (whether it was at someone else's suggestion or not) and that it's more than a lot of players would have done without being forced to.

I think it is nieve to think that Spikes really suspended himself for the whole game. I guess that Meyer realized he was getting too much backlash for the original punishment. It makes Spikes look better by saying that he initated the change and this way Meyer doesn't have to explain why he changed his mind.

You're probably right, POR....what surprises me is that I've definitely seen this happen in the NFL and never seen a punishment worse than a 15 yard penalty for it. I'm not saying that's all the punishment there should be for it (I think an ejection from the current game would be the best punishment), just that I'm surprised that the standards are so different.
