FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Well that's good news.

Definitely! They have no disclaimer on their site to let you know it's not legit. And it sure looks like it is. I was actually about to send it to my dh so he could see it when I saw the snopes one pop up. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known it wasn't true. Just an example of how easy it is for the media to start false rumors. Way too easy, actually.

They have a disclaimer.

And how do you figure that a website is "the media"? There is false information on this site. Is this "the media" because it's a website?

Here is a really well thought out article about evaluating what you read before passing it on: http://www.npr.org/2016/12/11/505154631/a-finders-guide-to-facts

Okay, I will clarify. They do not have a disclaimer on that article. Most people don't scour sites for disclaimers. They look on the article they have been directed to. So really easy to mislead. Also, to clarify I should have put "media" in quotes. I am aware they are not legit media but how many people on this very thread thought they were? So it's easy to see how easily false information can be spread. And a lot of times it is by reputable media sources, not just the false ones. I hope this cleared up my post.

Instead of taking a few minutes to see if the story appears anywhere else, people just see it backs up what they want to say and post it. It's not really difficult to just do a quick check to see if you are repeating something that's true or something that you just want to be true.

I'm the one that posted the link so it's me that has egg on my face. It's not even a story that I would expect to be satire simply because, why? I mean, what's to gain from a car wreck story other than just to fool people.
Sorry,
Paul

Or a quick search to see if the entire site is considered a reputable source. In this case a simple search or reading any of the site's own info about itself would have shown that it was satire.

No worries. That's the point. Most people don't know about these satire sites. The story sounds legit at first. Anyone could have done the same. I've dealt with some satire sites but most are usually kinda funny. This one seemed true unless you digged a little deeper. Coulda happened to anyone. On the plus side, welcome to the world of satire news sites. Now you know! ;)
