FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

As far as aircraft evacuations, I would think the flight attendants would tell those playing with luggage to leave it in place, period. They can certainly make something like this an order.

Yes too many people though, too few FA's. And the FA's are going to busy trying to get people off safely. They can't be in two places at once.

This was discussed on a frequent flyer board I visit regularly. I suggested that the crew have the ability to LOCK the overhead storage bins (through some sort of code input or button push) in the event of an evacuation which would prevent people from opening them and grabbing bags.

The only issue I could see is if the locks engage and don't unlock in a non-emergency situation. However it is a good idea. Another easy idea would be if airlines followed their own rules. I'm still seeing at least 10 passengers each time I fly who shove those ridiculously large roller bags into the overhead even though they don't fit the way they are suppose to. Of course when the airlines do manage to follow their own rules they always flag my normal sized bag even though it has fit in every overhead bin I've ever used it on (I still swear Jetblue's measuring device is an inch or two smaller then the actual smallest overhead bin so they can force you to pay to check).

Has there been any updates today? Is anyone else finding it odd how relatively quiet the aftermath of this has been?

I myself haven't heard any updates though I would like some. It's also been off of my local news stations front page on their websites for at least a day or two.

I think there are enough decent people who care who would back up the FA's. Most people get that your laptop, snackies and hair products aren't necessary in an emergency.
FWIW, I've been in one situation where FA's where shouting instructions. The chitty-chatters were told to shut it down quickly so everyone could hear.

Interesting to look back at the start of this thread. There was only ever one shooter. Just another one of those things were initial reports can never be counted on 100%.

Snackies may be important in certain situations, especially for children and diabetics.

I totally get that in an aircraft emergency, you really have no idea what you will and won't grab. And instincts will take over. But PLEASE, if at all possible, override your instinct to grab the backpack and just evacuate the airplane!
The reason they say to leave all belongings is not just because it takes a few seconds to grab the bag. It's because that bag will be in the way and will slow down the evacuation. Think about how skinny airplane aisles are and how easy it is for a bag to get hooked on an armrest as you're walking down the aisle (that happens to me when I'm just slowly boarding a plane, let alone when I'm moving and in a panic). You'll need two hands to safely leave the plane and get down the shoot. The people around you will need the space that your backpack takes up. And once you're out of the plane, especially in a water landing, you sure as heck don't want the weight of a bag to deal with.
If your wallet's in your pocket - awesome. If you can easily grab your phone from the seat pocket, great. But please do *not* bring a bag with you when evacuating the plane.

Aircraft evacuation procedures are incredibly well designed and thought out. Everyone's life will be safer if you actually follow instructions.

If snackies are a critical need, then put them in your pocket.
The children likely will be far better helped by the adult's free hands guiding them in the correct direction and out of the aircraft.

This...and not to mention should you have to evacuate on something like a slide, a bag with any type of metal latch, etc can get caught on your way down, etc. Carrying a bag out can just really complicate things from many perspectives.

Actually, kept in a small cross body bag...and not for a child's convenience. Other essentials are kept in travel pouches worn on my person. I have both hands free.

Even when they originate with the TSA. There was a lot of confusion.

I think people who truly have a need have figured this out.
I travel with someone with very serious neurological disease. Meds are critical. I have a neck pouch that I can slip into my shirt, hands free carrying.

I am reading now that he thought and initially planned for NYC on New Years Eve but determined security was just too tight so he canceled that flight and rebooked for FLL.

I think we see more people with bags now and days is probably that its best to just get everyone off one way or the other. I cant imagine a FA arguing with a passenger with a bag when the passenger is gonna jump with the bag. def not right though. Would be cool if the FA can just lock all the overhead bins or something...

Then I assume you sided with the bakery that claimed it was against their religion/beliefs to bake a cake for a same sex wedding.
We're so divided that people are still protesting the election.
Six people died due to their actions protesting it

I realize I'm late to this thread, and this is as far as I've read so far, so please forgive me if this has been covered. BUT the part about the 6 people dying for protesting is false from a false news source, probably sattire.

IMO, what happened in FLL is no where near comparable to an airplane emergency. NOTE: I'm only comparing the evacuation itself, not what prompted the evacuation.

Absolutely! I was just responding to people talking about grabbing their bags under their airplane seats vs. overhead bins and pointing out that even if you can quickly grab your under-seat bag, it's still not what you're supposed to do and for good reason.
