FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

One thing I noticed from some of the video out there of people fleeing the terminal...I am confounded by how many people are running away with their luggage in tow. In one video a couple seemed to have dropped some bags and went back to get them.

I can't imagine what must go through ones mind in the heat of the moment, but I urge anyone who is running for their life to please drop everything and go.

One of my mom's neighbor's was told to evacuate NOW due to an approaching wildfire. In her haste, she left her purse, but grabbed a banana. The fire missed her house, so it was something to laugh about later. But at the moment, it was the instinct she had.

There wasn't a connection in the end ..
It just happened to be a shooting the same state that initially appeared to be random..
Sometimes these acts of violence bring others out of the woodwork which absolutely turned out not be the case.
Right that's actually my point. It doesn't have a connection with the FLL incident..just a shooting in the same state. The only reason my local news picked it up was because of that fact. Otherwise it wouldn't have been a blimp on the radar.

And yes sometimes these things do bring out the people who want to do harm to others but I don't think it is prudent to latch on to key words of gun, shooting, prior violence, etc and make the leap that things are related to each other. The Orlando incident, as sad and awful as it is, could have been in any other city in the nation and on any other day.

That phenomenon is actually why airlines may have to start doing away with overhead storage. Airlines are having a hard time evacuating planes in the 90 seconds they have to do so because people take the time to grab their luggage. If I can find the article again I'll share it but right now in real life situations and not crew members running drills it is taking upwards of 15 minutes to clear all passengers and the #1 issue seems to be people grabbing their purses, laptop bags, and even roller luggage.

I remember all the fire drills and tornado drills I had in school and at my work. One thing they always stressed on was not to worry about your belongings but of course all the women grabbed their purses. It's really hard not to. In the case of an airplane and of a wildfire my main thought would be to get out of course but also to get my wallet at least that would have my DL and my cards. If I was at home it would be the safety of my cat before my wallet though. In an airplane my wallet is not in my purse but is in the bag under the seat as my purse is stored in my carry on (which is in the overhead bin space).

I think we all want to save our belongings but I don't think it's really isolated to just airplanes and luggage. If they got ride of overhead storage that would seem like a weak-ish reason to me..people would still want to grab their luggage/belongings under the seat in front of them. It's an instinct for a lot of people especially IDs like DLs and Passports and cards. You want to have that with you and if for some reason you didn't have your cell phone with you you would want that too to be able to contact others.

Under the seat is quicker though then overhead. It should be a relatively quick motion to grab whatever is under the seat as you are getting up and leaving. Think about how long it takes to disembark especially if someone has shoved a too big bag in the overhead.

I agree with the purse thing if we have a drill where we leave the building I'll take the 2 seconds to take my bag as it is right with me but I don't think I'd take the time to get stuff out of my cabinet if that makes sense.

It may be quicker for some but it is still the same principle..you are grabbing your belongings. If that's the reason the airlines are giving to think about removing overhead bin space IMHO I find that a weak reason. You can't guarantee that each passenger can quickly get their items from under their seat nor can you guarantee that each passenger takes a long time to get their items from the overhead bin space. Some will be quicker than others but the reason behind it is to get their belongings. I could see airlines wanting to remove overhead bin space (or make it a paid add-on to decrease usage of it) moreso to speed up the process of being able to load/unload and take off thereby increasing their profits (and I'm not saying that in a bad evil way just a practical way) not necessarily for safety reasons just based on principle of instinct to get your belongings whether they are in overhead bin space or under your seat.

It makes sense for sure.

I know it may be my own crazy paranoia but when I fly I have a little zip credit card pouch that holds my ID, credit card and it clips to my belt loop. My phone is in my hands the whole time. I also wear shoes that wouldn't easily be slipped off (like flip flops or sandals). In the event I need to evacuate the plane or airport, All I have to do is run.

I don't know if it's paranoia, or a sad commentary on the world today.

(I used to keep my ID in my pocket until the time I went to use the lavatory mid flight and when I sat on the toilet I heard "plunk"! My Driver's license had fallen out of my pocket and into the toilet where it sat precariously on the little silver flap...and kept slowly sliding towards the edge. I had to pulla Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible, style dangling act to get it out right before it would have fallen all the way in)

Your preparation sounds like common sense to me. I always wear hard soled shoes on a plane....anything else seems not only potentially dangerous if you have to evacuate, but also pretty unsanitary. Planes are not exactly clean places and that liquid on the floor in airplane bathroom isn't water. :rolleyes1 It always makes me internally wince when I see people barefoot or in stocking feet entering a lavatory, and I see it every flight I'm on. I too keep my necessary documents/wallet in the seat pocket in front of me where I could grab it in the one smooth motion while standing. If I'm traveling internationally, my passport goes in a waist pack which is always strapped to me.

I've seen the recommendations for the paranoid. One of them is don't wear synthetics, just in case there's a fire. I've heard of cases where the fabric melted and fused on skin.

I'm not particularly paranoid. I've boarded a plane with a polyester T-shirt, fleece jacket, and athletic shoes.

My DH and I were discussing this after reading about all the lost ID's etc...He has his in his wallet, so that's not going anywhere. When flying, I put my ID, insurance and cc's in a VERY small cross body purse which never leaves me. I am notorious for leaving my purse places and no way do I want to leave my purse in the airport bathroom right before a trip! Even if I left the plane/waiting area at a dead run with nothing in my hands, I'd still have the essentials.

Items..on my body or within arms length are my passport, cash, credit cards, meds, phone with backup battery, a jacket and snacks/water. Don't think, I missed anything. Oh, and usually an extra pair of shoes too.

Not paranoid...aware and prepared.

Having gone through it on Friday I can tell you exactly what went through my mind. I'm under a bench, I'm laying on top of my kids, my husband stands up and yells to us 'GO NOW!!!!". I have to leap over the table that my purse is on to get to the open door. I grab it to get it out of my way. My wallet spilled out. All I was thinking of was getting the hell out of there before my children get shot. I think about dragging another girl with us because she's rooted in place screaming, and I think this can't possibly be happening. I am yelling to be people to be calm so we don't get trampled. I am yelling "We can get outside safely together, let's work together".
We've lost our wallets, keys , ID's and money. We were told to get down first and then when ran. We sure weren't thinking about stuff. I was with 14 people.. they were what mattered.

I actually understand. While I can't say for sure what I'd do "in the heat of the moment", I usually travel with a backpack and roll on suitcase. The backpack has all of my important stuff (electronics, medicines, passports (if travelling internationally), etc). The roll on would have clothes. I feel pretty safe I'd grab the backpack at least. It's always within arms reach. As far as "running for your life", one guys life was actually saved because a bullet hit his laptop that was in his backpack.

People are always more important than stuff. I totally understand what you did, and why.

When I was involved in the Navy Yard shooting, most of us left our purses behind. Of course, we had been "practicing" fire drills for years so we knew to get out of the building fast and that down well, but we always thought "oh they are just drills" and many people just did the drill and came back in. However, some of our drills ended up taking 45 minutes, so I had started taking my purse and CAC ID on the drills. Thank goodness I had gotten into that habit, because so many women, at least, were kind of stuck without their car keys, house keys, money, anything to get home after the shooting. We did have special services available to help people get home but it was hard on many people.

Nowadays, no one leaves anywhere without taking everything.

This was discussed on a frequent flyer board I visit regularly. I suggested that the crew have the ability to LOCK the overhead storage bins (through some sort of code input or button push) in the event of an evacuation which would prevent people from opening them and grabbing bags.

It's a great idea. I wonder though how many people would slow the evacuation down even further by standing there trying to get it open. LOL.

Yes this was suggested as potential problem but it would be covered in the safety guidelines before takeoff. Some people probably wouldn't pay attention but I think it would be self-enforced by other passengers. If you're trying to evacuate and some knucklehead is standing there blocking you trying to unlock the bin, you're probably going to inform him and if he doesn't listen, you will likely grab him by his shirt collar and help escort him off.

As far as aircraft evacuations, I would think the flight attendants would tell those playing with luggage to leave it in place, period. They can certainly make something like this an order.
