I can only address the last half of your trip – the 880 miles from just north of Washington, D.C. to Orlando. We make the drive three or four times a year and we always take I-95. It averages about 12 ½ hours with quick stops for gas, food, and bathroom breaks and is not that bad of a drive. But, as a previous poster stated, you need to be mindful of when you are driving through the Washington area. It’s not really the Washington Beltway that you have to be concerned with but rather I-95 in northern Virginia. The 30 miles of that road south of the Beltway must have the worst congestion of any road in the country. It’s worst going south from around 2:30 pm until 8:00 pm (or 9:00 pm on Fridays). Try not to be there during those hours. In the morning, it’s usually clear by 9:30 am going south. Just a word about I-81 – it is the most dangerous road in Virginia. I hate driving on it. One-quarter of the vehicles on it are trucks – big trucks. The road is very hilly and the trucks speed down the hills and then crawl up the hills; often trying to pass each other causing blocks that seemingly last forever. And then I-77 through Charlotte can be difficult at times also. My advise is to time your arrival in the D.C. area so you’re not there at rush hour and stick with I-95. One last thing, google “construction I-95 Georgia” before you leave to see what’s going on there around milepost 30.
