Hello Everyone,

Debbie here ! As George has mentioned, I'm new to cruising and the DISboards. I am excited about going on this cruise, but also scared stiff. The main thing that has me running scared is seasickness. I figure if I go armed with Dramamine, a wrist patch, whatever people put behind the ear, visit the ship's doc for a shot and slam down a bunch of candied ginger, and wash it down with gingerale, maybe I can get through it. I bet you can wait to meet me! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Welcome Debbie, AKA georgemoe's DW. Try not to get sucked into the lunacy around here.

Oh, I like a little lunacy now and then. Like right now for instance....I'm watching George play around with trying to renew his passport. The guy sent it in once already and the government sent it back and said no way....they didn't like the photo, but not because he's not handsome or anything......it's those homemade photos ya know? I keep telling him to bite the bullet and just get a contact sheet from CVS - but oh no....we'll see how long this will go on....:)

Welcome Deb!

Where did you get your screen name? The reason I ask is because I know someone named Anita Wood. My jaw

Welcome Debbie!

Take only as much seasickness meds as you need to treat the symptoms. I swear by ginger tablets and keeping myself well hydrated.

Relax, you're going to have a great time!

I heard that !!!! :scared1:  :scared1:  :scared1:

Just call me...Ginger on the cruise :lmao:

Are you telling me it works? Say yes and mean it!

Some medical studies have shown it works.
Here's a link to a scuba site that quotes published medical studies...http://www.scuba-doc.com/moresea.htm

Of course, there are studies that show otherwise, or are inconclusive... I bolded the test participant numbers, for I tend to lean towards studies with larger numbers of participants, and the first study says it was randomized and double-blind, which is essential for ANY legit study.
Motion Sickness

The use of ginger root for preventing seasickness and motion sickness was investigated in several studies. In one attempt to prevent seasickness, ginger root was compared to six other medications in a randomized, double-blind study of 1,741 tourist volunteers (observations were obtained from 85.5% of the participants).Ginger root was found to be as effective as five out of the six medications, and superior to scopolamine transdermal therapeutic system in preventing seasickness. This anti-motion effect of ginger was not shown to be related to its CNS effects, but were possibly due to anticholinergic and antihistaminic actions. In a separate study, the anti-motion sickness effect of ginger compared to scopolamine or a placebo was tested on 28 subjects. Ginger showed no activity against motion sickness in doses as high as 1,000 mg given orally. In contrast, scopolamine (0.6 mg PO) provided significant protection against motion sickness when compared to the control group. Thus, the use of ginger for the prevention of seasickness remains controversial.

Oh, and the most compelling evidence??? MYTHBUSTERS!!! They did an episode, it worked for them...so it's plausible.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks so much for the welcome! And, for the med advice.....from what I've been hearing, that seems to be the way to go. If not, everybody cover up your shoes!

I think all the food and drink will make some of us sick! Not that we are gluttons or anything, I'm just sayin' :rolleyes1

Well, I'm a HUGE Elvis fan. Anita Wood is the name of his first childhood girlfriend. Lucky, lucky, lucky!

I don't know....this will be my first cruise....it's just a concern of mine as well.

I have to take Dramamine before getting on planes. (and can't ride in the back seat of the car)...so thanks, Mindy for your info. ;)

I will be ready before boarding the ship. :boat:
