BACKGROUND: Kona Cafe is another restaurant that my family has been to many times, as the Polynesian was once our favorite Disney resort (and still holds a special place in our hearts). We have had all three meals there, but haven't had lunch in several years and our last dinner in March 2010 was just so-so. Consequently I would have to say that breakfast is currently my favorite meal at Kona Cafe. However, sit-down breakfasts at Disney World are a rare occurance for my family these days. DH doesn't like to get up early when on vacation and the kids just don't like to get up early...
EVER! So knowing that I have to choose my battles wisely, I usually plan one, but no more than two, sit-down breakfasts per trip. On this trip, I had planned three (if you count Wolfgang Puck Express).

So did I choose well, when I decided to have...
BREAKFAST AT KONA CAFE
Following our stay-in evening, DD2 decided to stay up most of the night reading (the girl loves to read, and would definitely give Belle a run for her money

). Consequently, she was in no mood for her mother's early morning wake-up call, or I should say...wake-up song. You see, I have an "annoying habit" (as my kids would say) of singing the "Good Morning" song which was performed by Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor in the 1952 movie,
"Singing in the Rain".
Now most of you were probably not even born in 1952 (actually I was not even born yet

), but I'm hoping maybe some of you are still familiar with it. Wait, actually I just remembered that a scene from this movie is depicted in the Great Movie Ride, so maybe more of you are familiar with this film than I had thought.
Anyway this is a part of the lyrics...
Good Mornin', Good Mornin'
It's great to stay Up late
Good Mornin', good mornin' to you!
My daughter's reaction to my singing this "wake-up" song plus opening the curtains of the living room (where she was sleeping on the pull-out sofa) was reminiscent of another classic movie (this one a little more recently made, in 1973). So has anyone here seen "The Exorcist"???
I'm just kidding...actually, her head didn't do a complete 360 degree spin.
So as you may have guessed, DD2
DID NOT join us for breakfast at Kona Cafe. Now DD1 (who's breakfast normally consists of a strong cup of coffee

) agreed to go, but only on one condition...that we would not also have lunch that day.

So with the choice of eating at Kona by myself or having a dining companion but skipping lunch, I was forced to nix my plan to have lunch at Columbia Harbour House that day. With this in mind, I decided to move back our reservation to later in the morning, making it more like "brunch".
And so we began our breakfast at Kona Cafe, by ordering these beverages...
100% Kona Coffee French Press Pot - $7.49
-and-
Mimosa - sparkling wine and orange juice - $8.25
Now I normally don't partake of alcoholic beverages this early in the day, but I had three good excuses to do so.
1) We were spending the rest of the day at Magic Kingdom (aka the "Dry" Kingdom).
2) I was also drinking some pretty strong Kona coffee at the same time, which I'm sure countered any effect that the alcohol might have had, right???
3) I was skipping lunch so I needed the extra sustenance.
Okay, now on to the food.
So you would think that DD1 would have ordered one of the items which is unique to Kona Cafe, like Tonga Toast, Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes, or the Samoan. You know, something that you don't often see on a restaurant's breakfast menu. So what did she order???
Ham and Cheese Omelet, served with home-fried potatoes and a biscuit - $10.99
Ah yes, that very original breakfast entree, the ham and cheese omelet.

She only gave her breakfast a rating of "Good", but I think her judgement may have been slightly clouded by the fact that she was somewhat "peeved" with me. You see my friends, my daughter actually wanted me to share an entree with her. But since she does not like pancakes, I quickly denied her request. Because when I go to Kona Cafe for breakfast, there is no way in hades that I'm going to order anything other than this...
Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes - with macadamia nut butter, pineapple sauce and your choice of ham, bacon or sausage - $9.99.
I am convinced that if food is eaten in heaven, then these will surely be served for breakfast there. Enough said.
Oh, wait a minute, one more thing. Do not make the mistake that I did back in May 2011 when I got the Big Kahuna platter, expecting that the pancakes included were the real deal. While they were very good, I left wondering what the big deal was here on the boards about "Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes".

Well, shortly after that trip,
MickeyNicki also paid a visit to Kona and in her review explained the difference between the two. The ones included on the platter are just regular pancakes topped with macadamia nut butter and pineapple. When you get the full order of Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes there are
macadamia nuts in the pancakes. So if you like macadamia nuts, this pushes the rating of these pancakes from a Very Good "Peter Pan" up to a Magical "Tinkerbell".
So once again, I have
MickeyNicki to thank for enlightening me.
Since we had a late ADR, we were one of the last to leave the restaurant before they began seating for lunch. I took this opportunity to snap a photo of a nearly empty Kona Cafe restaurant.
Oh, and since I had forgotten to take a picture of the menu, I quickly took a picture of the menu posted outside of the restaurant as we were leaving.
As you can see, I took a picture of the wrong menu. I guess drinking the Kona coffee didn't counter the effects of that mimosa afterall.
And so our overall rating of the meal was: Very Good
NEXT UP: Not Lunch at Columbia Harbour House (or anywhere else, for that matter)
