First a Little Pomp & Circumstance, then a Whole Lot of Disney Dining! COMPLETE

Thanks for clarifying that the Big Kahuna pancakes are NOT the same!! Here I thought I could get away with ordering that to try the pancakes... Guess I will just have to go for the real deal!!

I LOVE! those pancakes but if you ever have the chance to eat at Kona in Oct you must get the pumpkin pancakes...HOLY MOLY are they incredible but the maple walnut butter is amazing all on its own!

We are going to Kona in Oct and again in Dec...I wonder if they will have gingerbread ones then!

Oh my gosh, I LOVE the macadamia nut pineapple pancakes! I do believe that I learned about ordering them on their own as opposed to in the Big Kahuna from Mickinicki as well! We went in August of 2011 and I knew that I definitely had to get them by themselves and they were amazing. They are so filling that it didn't look like I put a dent in them but highly worth it and I'd do it again!

I'm reading on my lunch break at work right now. I just ate and I could still go for some of those right now.

You mean I am going to have to decide between Macadamia Nut pancakes, Pumpkin pancakes, and Tonga Toast?!?!? I thought it was bad enough trying to decide between 2 items!!!

I was hoping they'd still have pumpkin in Dec! I've wanted them ever since I saw them on your DR!!

yum great reviews, we tried Kona breakfast last year- I loved it.
I cheated with the breakfast, my son wanted plain pancakes and I was torn between the big kahuna and macadamia pancakes.
so I got both and swapped the pancakes :thumbsup2
The pancakes are very filling and I hardly ate any of my big kahuna-luckily my husband was there to finish it off :rotfl:

It seems that there are many of us here who have learned a thing or two from you, MickeyNicki! :thumbsup2 In regard to the pumpkin pancakes, I do remember them very well from your Oct. 2011 trip reviews. When I was at Kona in Nov. they still had them, so I was faced with quite a dilemma. I tried my best to convince my DH to order pancakes, but the darn guy insisted on getting the Samoan. So I ended up having to choose and went with the Macadamia-Pineapple ones. But I wish I could have gotten a combo platter with one of each kind. ;)

 Hi Nicky (darthtatty)! Thanks for joining in and posting a comment.

And great idea on the pancake swap! :thumbsup2

I know the Good Morning Song and like you have been singing it to wake up my kids since they were little. When I was young I use to love watching old movies on PBS on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Singing in the Rain was my favorite. Good to know I'm not the only on who tortures their children with the song in the morning.

I booked Kona for my mother/daughter trip next month. Seeing your report makes me hope we make it. I was hoping to get the Big Kahuna to get to try the pancakes because I like pancakes but don't eat a lot of them. TY for the heads up that they aren't they same and the full version.

Kona's Pineapple Macadamia nut Pancakdes are AMAZING!!!!:cloud9: I don't even have to look at a menu when I go there any longer! Sooooo delish!

You (or rather MickiNiki) answered a question that was lingering in my mind about the difference between the Big Kahuna which I had the first time I went and the macadamia nut pancakes. As much as I LOVE those pancakes, last tme, it was like the nuts were a little over browned or something??? But heck, they are an amazing way to start your day!

And gotta love the Mimosa - I don't need any talking me into to have one of those!

That was a lovely breakfast and will make my instant oatmeal for breakfast quite sucky in comparison!!! :lmao:

Thanks for sharing your pictures of breakfast at Kona. My fav is the Macadamia Nut Pancakes too. Can't imagine ordering anything else there, but my son just came through and took a second look at your DD's omelette.

I laughed at your story of trying to get your family out of bed for breakfast. I have the exact same problem. ;)

That is so funny that you sang your daughter the "Good Morning" song! I ALWAYS sing that to DH when he's being grumpy in the morning. (Huge, huge Singin' In The Rain fan right here) Needless to say it does not ever make him less grumpy, but what kind of wife would I be if I didn't try to purposely annoy my hubby. :lmao:

Your Kona pancakes look delish! I got them with the Big Kahuna last trip, but I need to try the real deal next time. Great update!

First of all...Hi SweetSpot! :wave2: Thanks for joining in here and adding your comment!

Next, I'm very happy to have found two kindred spirits here on the boards. :thumbsup2 Not only do you both share my love for "Singing in the Rain" but also the need to annoy our loved ones. :lmao:

Yea, when the kids were younger we did a lot of character breakfasts, so I used to be able to coax them out of bed with the threat that Mickey would be very upset if they didn't show up on time for the breakfast he had prepared for them. ;) For some reason, that just doesn't work anymore??? :lmao:

I had to laugh at this because as I was reading your comment, I was feeling the exact same way about my sucky lunch.

BACKGROUND: The girls had never been to Artist Point. Well, that is, unless you count having breakfast there with Winnie the Pooh & Friends. ;)

Artist Point Character Breakfast - Dec. 2000

Does anyone else remember when Artist Point hosted a character breakfast? Unfortunately this one with Winnie the Pooh didn't last all that long...from 1998 to June 1, 2001. For the two years before that, it was Pocahontas & Friends (with Captain John Smith, Meeko and Governor Ratcliff). Now that would have been awesome, especially hosted in the beautiful and very appropriate setting of the Wilderness Lodge. Anyway, here's one more picture from our Winnie the Pooh & Friends breakfast...

Artist Point Character Breakfast - Dec. 2000

During our first experiences with taking pictures at character meals, it seems like we often had the problem of cutting off the characters heads. And of course you wouldn't realize it until after you had your roll of film developed. :sad2: Did anyone else have this decapitation problem? Does anyone remember using cameras that required film? :lmao:

Anyway, as I was saying before, having dinner at Artist Point was a new experience for the girls but as for me, this was my second dinner there. The first time was in Nov. 2010 (during our 25th anniversary trip), when DH and I had dinner at Artist Point.

Our First Dinner at Artist Point - Nov. 2010

I very much enjoyed that dinner, which for me consisted of the Smokey Portobello Mushroom Soup, Salmon, and this for dessert...

Artist Point Berry Cobbler - Nov. 2010

Not only did they serve us this candlelit dessert in celebration of our anniversary, but also gave us complimentary glasses of dessert wine to have with it. Unfortunately the meal was not a total success though, because DH did not like his entree at all. He had the Grilled Beef Tenderloin (which was very tough and chewy), served with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes (which were unevenly heated, parts were hot and other parts cold). Consequently, he was not at all impressed with Artist Point after this first experience. :sad2:

But with him not being along on this trip, I thought it would be the perfect time to return for...

Our reservation was for 5:30, which is the opening time of the restaurant. Since we were one of the first parties to be seated, we quickly took some pictures while the surrounding tables were empty.

Artist Point Menu as of May 23, 2012

I apparently was very thirsty that evening because I was a two-fisted drinker, ordering both an ice tea and a glass of King Estate Pinor Noir. ;)

0b082b8b.jpg

None of the appetizers sounded appealing to the girls except for the cheese plate. But when I saw there were only 3 cheeses included (and one of them a blue cheese, which they wouldn't eat) for $14, I didn't think it was worth it. :sad2:
So for their appetizer they shared the entire...

Now I believe this was sourdough bread and that it was good, but I actually didn't have any because I was happily devouring this...

Smokey Portobello Soup with Roasted Shiitakes, Chive Oil, and Sourdough Croutons

I think Belle5's description of this soup in her recent review pretty much says it all...

"Now, one of the reasons I was wanting to return to AP was to drown myself in this soup. The word "soup" is really too lowly a word for this glorious concoction."

And I say...Amen to that, sister! :thumbsup2

Now I'm not quite sure if it was the blissful look on my face or if I was making some sort of groaning sounds (unintentially, of course ;)) as I ate, but something spiked DD1's curiosity in my soup. When she asked to taste it, I rather selfishly reminded her that it was chocked full of mushrooms. :p But not even this would deter her, so I begrudgingly allowed her to take a spoonful. And wouldn't you know it, she very much liked this mushroom soup. So much so that from that point on it became a race between our spoons, as to which of us would get more of the remaining soup in my bowl. Ah yes, the sacrifices we mothers make for our children. ;)

Now I must cut off the review here, so please stay tuned for Dinner at Artist Point - Part II.

Dinner at Artist Point - Part II

Okay, so I left off as we were about to order our entrees. As you may recall from my earlier reviews, I openly admitted that I am very much a creature of habit. This "habit" definitely carries into my food choices when dining out. If I find something(s) on a restaurant's menu that I really like, then I tend to order that same thing again and again. My motto is often, "why mess with success"? :confused3 Now I know there are pitfalls in this theory, as DonaldDoleWhip has proven to me many times. He sometimes orders things that I am unfamiliar with or that sound unappealing to me from their menu description, but somehow they end up looking and sounding wonderful in his reviews...well, most of the time anyway. ;) So yes, I know that I'm probably missing out on many delicious, new things by being so unadventurous, but as long as there are reviewers here like DDW to test out the waters (so to speak), then for me, it's all good. :thumbsup2

So I guess that was the very long way of saying this...

Last time I got the Salmon and really liked it, so this time I ordered the...

Cedar Plank-roasted Columbia River Wild King Salmon
Contemporary Niçoise, Eggplant Caviar, Heirloom Tomatoes, Quail Egg, and Meyer Lemon Aïoli

I know, I know...creature of habit. :lmao: (you can quit laughing now, Donald ;))

But in all seriousness, this was again outstanding! :thumbsup2 Maybe even better than last time. I really enjoyed the salmon and everything else that was served with it. Oh, and I must admit that I was unsure as to what exactly "Contemporary Nicoise" meant, so of course I googled it..

Nicoise is the French word for "in the style of Nice." So, any dish that is labeled Nicoise would be in the cooking style of Nice, France.

So this entire dish was very "nice" ;) and I happily awarded it a rating of "Excellent".

Okay, now for DD1. She had earlier complained that we were almost to the end of our trip and she hadn't yet had a steak. So when I saw the New York Strip listed on the menu, I suggested that she order that. Well, it seems that she had had a phone conversation with her dad that afternoon. When she told him that we were having dinner at Artist Point, he advised her not to order the steak (hmm...I guess someone is still holding a grudge ). She did however take me up on my second suggestion...

IMG_1091.jpg

clipsmee-1.jpg
Slow-roasted 64°C Buffalo Strip Steak
Served with Zellwood Corn-Sausage Hash, Yukon Gold Potato Smear, and Blackberry Pinot Noir Reduction

And so, as you can tell from her "Mr. Smee" rating, she wasn't too happy with this dish. In fact, she ended up trading with her sister, who was equally unhappy with her choice...

IMG_1089.jpg

clipsmee-1.jpg
Grilled “C.A.B.” New York Strip Steak served with Fried Mac & Cheese, Roasted Fennel, Heirloom Carrots, and Chimichurri

Yep, DD2, being the independent thinker that she is, totally disregarded her father's advice and ordered the steak. But actually, I think her choice had more to do with the Fried Mac & Cheese than the steak. ;) Anyway, the end result was the same...like her dad, she was not impressed with the steak at Artist Point. :sad2: Now as I said before, the girls traded their dishes because they each ended up liking the other's choice slightly more than their own. However, they both still gave the other dish a rating of "Just Okay", so really not much improvement.

So after their unsuccessful entrees, I was really hoping that their desserts would improve the negative opinions that the girls were forming about Artist Point. :guilty: Would my hopes be fulfilled?

Stay tuned for Part III to find out if Artist Point can pull this one out of the fire??? ;)

No, you can't! I need to know how the meal ended! :lmao:

The salmon looks great in your 2010 pic. And I've never seen pics from the Artist Point character meal before. I knew it existed (and I've read good things about the blueberry french toast that was once served there), but it's very cool to see real pics from this meal. :thumbsup2 Part of me wishes the signature restaurants served breakfast or brunch (maybe a Sunday brunch). After seeing this review of a Narcoossee's TIW brunch event, I think there's so much potential for breakfast food at a signature level. :goodvibes

Come back! Don't leave us hanging .... popcorn::

I love your "vintage" photos. And yes, I'm one of those moms who have most of the kid's baby photos and growing up pics developed from 110 and 35 mm film. Heck, I even had one of those humongous video camera packs from the 80's for when the kids were little.

Back to your AP review. I definitely plan to have some of that smokey portobello soup - and I'm not allowing any kid to dip her spoon into my soup bowl!! :lmao:

Interesting that you mentioned the cheese plate only had 3 cheeses. I went back to my photos and sure enough only 3 little slices of cheese with some skimpy garnishes and walnut toast. Hmmm... I'm now rethinking the value of this item.

Your photos of the restaurant are very nice! Can't wait until Part II!!!

I agree about the mushroom soup at Artist Point. We were given this as an amuse bouche back in October. I hate all things mushroom, but that soup was actually very good. DH loved it... unfortunately I spilled half of mine on the floor. :sad2: (It was a long day)

Oh now I am on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what entrees you all ordered :scratchin

Love the old photos, so cool and what a lovely one of you and your DH :goodvibes

It looks like they have made a couple of changes to the AP menu since we last visited and there are several dishes that really appeal to me on there

I feel a re-visit is needed :thumbsup2
