Finding Nemo - your guess on the box office take by Labor Day?

Larry,

I will take $321.4M.

I think that this movie easily exceed $275M by the time all is said and done.

Besides, now that I have jumped into Car #2, I need to be more optimistic about the future and direction of our beloved company.

I see your point, Scoop. I kind of felt the same way about Monsters Inc. and look how well it did.

What amazes me (and I find very cool) is that each successive ad campaign for the new one shows more and more the artistry and detail in the underwater scenes. The last one I saw this morning was unbelievable...(and it focused on the turtle's surfer one-liners).

I will make a prediction on a prediction. I predict that my prediction is way, way, too low. Long live John Lassiter et al.

Oh yeah. One more thing. I just read that Monsters Inc. in total gross worldwide is now the #2 animated feature behind the Lion King. I truly did not realize how much of a box office smash the monster movie was.

Adjusted for Inflation?

Edit... I'll answer my own question... No still quite a few inbetween.

To me, didnt have the heart of LILO wasnt as funny as MI but held its own, it was funny and good for dads. tear jerker.I felt great being a dad wathin this flik. theatre was packed for a matinee...although it was the digital theatre so maybe thats why. Im stickin with 210
45-50mil opening.

whats looks really funny is the disney/pixar THE INCREDIBLES man that was funny. and boy have i been in that situation before lol really good teaser. the other trailer for the 'bear' film looked boooooring.

I also saw it today with the family. We all liked it (though I am tempted to lower my estimate after thinking about it! But I won't - it's not always about how good a movie is but the buildup.)

I'd have to say I liked Monsters Inc more, but the rest of my family thought it was a close call. I had no problem keeping the different characters apart, as some have suggested could be a problem. I think the big thing lacking is a great "buddy song", something which propels Toy Story and Monsters Inc to the top of my list. When you think about it, almost all the successful animated movies have great soundtracks, or at least one very memorable song. Most of the stinkers don't.

If you look at the domestic (unadjusted for inflation) box office receipts on the site you reference:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm
Monsters Inc is not too far behind Shrek at number 3 for animated flicks.

But for worldwide box office receipts:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/
it is number 2, so it is conceivable that the original poster heard that somewhere.

The Friday estimates are in:

1 FINDING NEMO $20,600,000
2 BRUCE ALMIGHTY $11,146,000
3 THE ITALIAN JOB $6,240,000
4 THE MATRIX RELOADED $4,400,000
5 WRONG TURN $1,690,000
6 DADDY DAY CARE $1,637,000
7 X2: X-MEN UNITED $1,285,000
8 THE IN-LAWS $993,000
9 DOWN WITH LOVE $484,000
10 HOLES $291,000

If that holds, then around $70 million for the weekend seems possible to me, then with a 3.5 - 4 multiplier my 250+ guess is looking pretty good -

Of course that is based only on the first day - let's see what happens-

My 2 daughters and a friend went to see it and really liked it!!!!
At the theatre we go to all the showing from noon till 815pm were sold out and it was playing on 3 different screens so that bodes well and word of m,outh from people who left was postive. The little bit i saw at the end lloked good, so it looks like another winner for pixar, now if only disney could match their quality!!!!

I think they are promoting Nemo much more so than L&S and Monsters. Even people that have not heard of the other two, know a lot about the making of Nemo from various clips and feature segments on different programs/networks.

Sat. estimate is 29.5 mill

"Finding Nemo" leads pack at U.S. box office
Reuters, 06.01.03, 12:29 PM ET

LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co.'s (nyse: DIS - news - people) underwater cartoon "Finding Nemo" doused its rivals at the North American box office by selling $70.6 million worth of tickets in its first three days of release, the company said on Sunday.

The computer-animated fishy tale sent Universal Pictures' Jim Carrey comedy "Bruce Almighty" down to the No. 2 slot with an estimated three-day haul of $35.6 million; the 10-day haul for "Bruce" surged to $135.7 million. Universal is a unit of Vivendi Universal SA <EAUG.PA> (nyse: V - news - people).

The top 10 boasted two other newcomers. Paramount Pictures' "The Italian Job," a remake of the 1969 crime caper of the same name, opened at No. 3 with a strong $19.3 million. Paramount is a unit of Viacom Inc (nyse: VIAb - news - people) (nyse: VIAb - news - people).

Twentieth Century Fox's "Wrong Turn," a low-budget teen thriller, grossed a modest $5 million, tied at No. 6 with the studio's "X2: X-Men United." Fox is a unit of News Corp.'s <NCP.AX> (nyse: NWS - news - people) Fox Entertainment Group Inc (nyse: NWS - news - people).

"Finding Nemo," which Disney produced with Pixar Animation Studios Inc. (nasdaq: PIXR - news - people), set a new opening record for an animated film, surpassing the $62.5 million bow of Disney/Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." in November 2001, Disney said.

The cartoon revolves around a plucky clownfish in the Australian tropics who must reunite with his father (voiced by Albert Brooks). Ellen DeGeneres also added her voice to the film, which was directed and co-written by Andrew Stanton, a veteran of such Pixar hits as "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life."

Saw it last night and it is excellent.

Looks like Pixar is 5 for 5...

Regarding Monsters, Larry's comment does refer to worldwide box office, which Box Office Mojo backs up. It is behind only The Lion King.

Ditto - excellent film.

Also - just as a data point from a small market area (just a half dozen or so theatre complexes).

Most of the local 'multi-plexes' were sold out for all three days for all shows from opening until 7pm or so. Actually a stronger showing than Monsters...

If it takes in $40m or so this weekend...Nemo will have pulled in more than Atlantis and Treasure Planet combined.

The movie public seems to like story driven features much more than action/adventure animated features, IMHO.

I thought that Nemo returned to the more heartfelt, and less frantic pace of TS2. I would rank it 2nd, right behind TS1, in my list of favorites from Pixar.

It's just amazing that this little company keeps putting out films that get "inside". Nemo was just terrific!

I was on the verge of crying when Marlin asked Crush about his age......clinging to the hope of finding Nemo. It really was a beautiful film, and I loved the pacing. It never felt rushed or jammed.....the director just let the story unfold at its own pace. Very cool.

So many little touches and jokes too. The Shark named "Bruce" after the shark in Jaws, the toys on the floor of the Dentist office, the bit during the credits. The colors and lighting.... Wow.

They showed the short film with the Snowglobe just prior to the movie as well. I saw that long ago and it was just as funny now.

Can't wait for The Incredibles!

DH and I loved it. Hard to pick a favorite Pixar movie now-they are all so good:) I say 245mil if you are still counting. I was tearing up when Dory was begging Marlin not to leave, that she remembered things better when she was around him. I want to see it again!

Here is where finding nemo compares to the top films after 6 days of release - of course, not adjusted for inflation, still, amazingly, four of the top movies are in theaters RIGHT NOW. Two of those (M:R and X2) were pretty frontloaded. WHo knows what will happen to Nemo, but this is some pretty heady box office company this film is keeping up with -
