I checked out www.pickyourown.org and found a hydro farm nearby that has a Produce Club. (Parke's farm in Dover, FL) The membership fee is $50 for a year and you can order baskets of produce to pick up, either $15 for the small (which is huge) or $25 for the large (which is really huge!) The veggies and fruits are all organic and not grown in soil. I picked up a small basket this weekend and it contained cucumbers, 3 buches of red leaf lettuce, zuchinni, green beans, collard greens, eggplant, green peppers, strawberries, fresh basil, edible flowers, carrots, heirloom tomatoes and radishes.

It's a great deal, I highly recommend it for anyone in the east tampa/plant city/lakeland area!

We just moved from Tampa about 9 monthes ago . There is a GREAT pick your own strawberrys and blueberrys in dover as well . So yummy and fresh ! There is an Organic farm in Tampa GREAT place and wonderfull owners ! They have a yearly membership but you get a fruit every week makes it super cheap .
We do miss our organic farms in Florida . ENJOY !!!

here is a quick meal to wip out the freezer
buy a whole chicken and cook it. take the meat (your familys serving size0 freezes it. then someday take it out and heat it up with b-b-q sauce. my kids love it:woohoo: I usually serve it it on a bun (like sloppy joes ). also I usually can make 2-3 meals out of a whole chicken. I also freese the chicken for broc and chicken fetachine alfrado. :cheer2:

the bag is 99 cents and we used a quater of the bag

How do you use a quarter of the bag for 6 people??? We use a whole bag for my family of 5 each time we sit down to dinner. I really am amazed with how little some people seem to eat.

I think what turned me off most about her comment was the reference to buying generic cereal. Personally, I buy the name brands, but only because I can get them a lot cheaper than the generic (via coupons and/or clearances at Big Lots for $1.00 or less per box).

Her comment was really very ignorant, since most generic products are no different than the name brands. They are packaged in the same plants and contain the same ingredients. In most instances, generic foods are the identical product as the name brand, except for the label. You just don't know what name brand you're getting...for example, sometimes the generic might be Skippy and other times it might be Jif.

With all due respect, I believe you are mistaken about generics. They are not the same as brand name products without the fancy label. Generic foods may contain some of the same ingredients, but the QUALITY of the ingredients are different. I am not saying generics are bad, they are just different. They may be made by the same company, in the same plant, but they are different. Name brands use a higher quality of ingredients, but, like I said before, that doesn't make them bad.

As far as generic cereals go, when I read the labels I do notice that generic cereals have far less vitamins, minerals and fiber in them.

Everone just has to do what is best for their families.

and it is
VERY filling ( and bad for the waste line , but so good)

Where do you get your apples so cheap?

A bag of 9 apples is around $3.50 or more here. That is 39 cents+ per apple and the apples are so small. A quarter of apple slices would be about 4 slices. Not much of a family snack.;)

I also give them pretzels and milk not just an apple wedge. also they eat snack as soon as they come home from school at 3pm. We eat 5pm sharp.

Where was the farm in Tampa? Do you remember the name? We're in the North Tampa area, & that one may be closer. The farm in Dover sounds like a good deal, but it's not as close as I'd like. Unfortunately, I'm unable to do the pick-your-own produce, because of back problems. I need to find a place that does the picking for you. TIA :)

I kind of agree with her sentiment as well. Maybe it didn't come out the way it was intended? I know that happens often with email.

I think the point is that we probably all eat too much packaged or processed food. And really...mac and cheese is right up there. (Not that I don't make it sometimes too.) We would probably all be better off if we grabbed a package of tofu instead. Unfortunately, it is hard to pass up a .20 box of mac and cheese. Especially when most of us do have to watch our finances.

Seriously, the number one vegetable American children eat is french fries. I doubt most Americans are getting all the fiber and protein we should each day. :flower3: I think a lot of people who say they are feeding their family healthy truly think they are but when you look at what is in our shopping carts I think we could all do a little better.

Just my thoughts.

Heather

I agree. A diet with alot of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is really not very healthy. It contains ALOT of sodium and very little fiber and vitamins. Making your own pasta is alot healthier. I know it's hard to stretch that dollar, but you are doing your children a disservice by getting their taste buds used to such a high sodium diet.

Can't speak for cereals, but I used to work in a petfood plant (Mighty Dog and Friskies cat) and I can personally tell you that the private label brands we made were the EXACT same as the name brand. We simply put different labels in the labeling machine and ran the required number of private label/generic labels before switching back over. I don't doubt that some generics are not the same, but I know for a fact that some are.

Yesterday:
Breakfast: pancakes, strawberries, maple syrup: $2.25
Lunch: hot dogs and edamame $2.50
Snack: strawberry pie and milk $1.50
Dinner: I had some beef stew frozen from last month, warmed it up with some leftover edamame and served it over nooodles, cole slaw on the side. $7.75

TOTAL: $14 (pretty good since we had meat)

Today:
Breakfast: waffles, chocolate milk, bread w/ peanut butter (DH) $2
snacks: chocolate, cherries $3.50 (I wanted those cherries so bad)
lunch: leftover chicken soup w/ leftover noodles, strawberry pie (we are almost out); two grilled chicken breasts for DH; bread w/ butter for DD8; peaches, plums, banana. $4.25
Dinner: I have no idea what to make. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a tuna casserole but DD8 and DN8 won't touch it.:confused3

TOTAL: $9.75 and I did not even include dinner yet.

[I also never eat out at Mc donalds or Bk. I have been clean and sober for 4 years[/QUOTE]

That's a GREAT quote!!! I love that statement!!!

i couldn't imagine feeding my clan for ten dollars a day! Thats about £5! wow! with organic veg..wholemeal bread.white meat...several pints of milk a day...bottled water...cat food...dog food...just cant be done in rip off Britain!:rotfl2:

It can't be done in New York City, either!!!!

I feed ALOT of people every month. We are 6 adults in our family (Me, hubby, 2 adult children, 2 elderly parents) and my children's boyfriend and girlfriend who eat over about 80% of the time. I spend at least $1200 per month!!!! YIKES! We do eat alot of fresh foods.

This thread is so interesting ! Also, very inspiring, BUT....some of these meals do not seem to be enough to fill my family of 3 (let alone the many here who have more than 1 kiddo). There is no way that a quarter bag of salad could feed my family of 3 (we would eat half the bag, and then top with cucumbers, carrots and tomotos), so I cannot comprehend some of these portions! :confused3 But there have been many great recipes and ideas, budegt friendly, and so for those I say many thanks! :thumbsup2

I would love to be back in Brooklyn with the asian vegetable stores on every corner. You have no idea what it is like outside of NY. The prices are astronomical for fresh fruits and veggies. Every time we go visit friends in LI, I stop off the belt parkway in Brighton Beach and load up on fresh fruits and veggies. It is less than half of what I pay for most things here in MD.

I would like to clarify my post a little bit, just in case it was confusing. With the produce club at Parke's, you call 1 hr before you'd like the basket and then go pick it up, they do the picking for you. You don't have much control over what you get in the basket, but you can tell them what you don't like and what you would like extra of. I have extra tomatoes noted for my baskets. I would like to know the name of the one in Tampa as well, since I work with mostly Tampa folks.

Parke's is Approx MLK (S.R. 574) and just west of Branch Forbes Rd.

That's very interesting. I just never had a generic product that ever tasted like the brand name.

punkin,
I know this is a really dumb question, but could you explain some of the food you list? Some things sound interesting, but I don't know what they are. For example, Farmer's cheese, edamame, etc... Sorry, for being so dense. I'd love to add some new things to our menu though.
