Thank you for that link!!!!![]()
I can't take all the credit, someone else posted it earlier. But glad it could help! I have to say, the cucumbers and tomatoes were the best I've ever tasted.
Thank you for that link!!!!![]()
I checked out www.pickyourown.org and found a hydro farm nearby that has a Produce Club. (Parke's farm in Dover, FL) The membership fee is $50 for a year and you can order baskets of produce to pick up, either $15 for the small (which is huge) or $25 for the large (which is really huge!) The veggies and fruits are all organic and not grown in soil. I picked up a small basket this weekend and it contained cucumbers, 3 buches of red leaf lettuce, zuchinni, green beans, collard greens, eggplant, green peppers, strawberries, fresh basil, edible flowers, carrots, heirloom tomatoes and radishes.
It's a great deal, I highly recommend it for anyone in the east tampa/plant city/lakeland area!
I usually serve it it on a bun (like sloppy joes ). also I usually can make 2-3 meals out of a whole chicken. I also freese the chicken for broc and chicken fetachine alfrado.
the bag is 99 cents and we used a quater of the bag
I think what turned me off most about her comment was the reference to buying generic cereal. Personally, I buy the name brands, but only because I can get them a lot cheaper than the generic (via coupons and/or clearances at Big Lots for $1.00 or less per box).
Her comment was really very ignorant, since most generic products are no different than the name brands. They are packaged in the same plants and contain the same ingredients. In most instances, generic foods are the identical product as the name brand, except for the label. You just don't know what name brand you're getting...for example, sometimes the generic might be Skippy and other times it might be Jif.
How do you use a quarter of the bag for 6 people??? We use a whole bag for my family of 5 each time we sit down to dinner. I really am amazed with how little some people seem to eat.
, however I bought the bag before I got the free salid and I do not want to waste it. we are having home made mac and cheeseWhere do you get your apples so cheap?
A bag of 9 apples is around $3.50 or more here. That is 39 cents+ per apple and the apples are so small. A quarter of apple slices would be about 4 slices. Not much of a family snack.![]()
We just moved from Tampa about 9 monthes ago . There is a GREAT pick your own strawberrys and blueberrys in dover as well . So yummy and fresh ! There is an Organic farm in Tampa GREAT place and wonderfull owners ! They have a yearly membership but you get a fruit every week makes it super cheap .
We do miss our organic farms in Florida . ENJOY !!!

I kind of agree with her sentiment as well. Maybe it didn't come out the way it was intended? I know that happens often with email.
I think the point is that we probably all eat too much packaged or processed food. And really...mac and cheese is right up there. (Not that I don't make it sometimes too.) We would probably all be better off if we grabbed a package of tofu instead. Unfortunately, it is hard to pass up a .20 box of mac and cheese. Especially when most of us do have to watch our finances.
Seriously, the number one vegetable American children eat is french fries. I doubt most Americans are getting all the fiber and protein we should each day.I think a lot of people who say they are feeding their family healthy truly think they are but when you look at what is in our shopping carts I think we could all do a little better.
Just my thoughts.

With all due respect, I believe you are mistaken about generics. They are not the same as brand name products without the fancy label. Generic foods may contain some of the same ingredients, but the QUALITY of the ingredients are different. I am not saying generics are bad, they are just different. They may be made by the same company, in the same plant, but they are different. Name brands use a higher quality of ingredients, but, like I said before, that doesn't make them bad.
As far as generic cereals go, when I read the labels I do notice that generic cereals have far less vitamins, minerals and fiber in them.
Everone just has to do what is best for their families.

i couldn't imagine feeding my clan for ten dollars a day! Thats about £5! wow! with organic veg..wholemeal bread.white meat...several pints of milk a day...bottled water...cat food...dog food...just cant be done in rip off Britain!![]()
But there have been many great recipes and ideas, budegt friendly, and so for those I say many thanks! It can't be done in New York City, either!!!!
I feed ALOT of people every month. We are 6 adults in our family (Me, hubby, 2 adult children, 2 elderly parents) and my children's boyfriend and girlfriend who eat over about 80% of the time. I spend at least $1200 per month!!!! YIKES! We do eat alot of fresh foods.
Where was the farm in Tampa? Do you remember the name? We're in the North Tampa area, & that one may be closer. The farm in Dover sounds like a good deal, but it's not as close as I'd like. Unfortunately, I'm unable to do the pick-your-own produce, because of back problems. I need to find a place that does the picking for you. TIA![]()
Can't speak for cereals, but I used to work in a petfood plant (Mighty Dog and Friskies cat) and I can personally tell you that the private label brands we made were the EXACT same as the name brand. We simply put different labels in the labeling machine and ran the required number of private label/generic labels before switching back over. I don't doubt that some generics are not the same, but I know for a fact that some are.
Some things sound interesting, but I don't know what they are. For example, Farmer's cheese, edamame, etc... Sorry, for being so dense. I'd love to add some new things to our menu though.
