Favorite sides recipes for BBQ's

one of my favorite sides when we grill is Potato Wedges. Slice a potato in big "French fry" shapes...big enough so they won't fall between the grates of the grill....I then put them in a plastic bag and toss with olive oil, chili powder, garlic, etc and put them on the grill with whatever else we are cooking. They are so easy and so good!

I love Spinach Salad with fresh strwberries and a sweet poppyseed dressing.

I also make Panzanella Salad which is an Italian Bread Salad as well as a chopped Antipasto salad. For that I use Iceberg lettuce and chop it small. I then add olives, salami, ham, chunks of cheese, banana peppers, capers, pepperoni, and anything else that looks good.;)

Roasted corn and black bean salad.

If we are grilling steaks, we also like a side of sauteed mushrooms. I just saute them in some butter with salt and pepper. With steaks we also like a simple wedge salad with Iceberg, thin sliced red onions and chunks of good blue cheese.

Now I wanna steak!!:goodvibes

I always make cole slaw

1 bag shredded cabbage/carrot mix

2/3 c mayo
2 T vinegar
2 T milk
1/4 C sugar
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Mix all together, toss in cabbage and let sit overnight. Will look like not enough liquid but it wil be fine as the cabbage weeps.

I also make Baked Beans - No recipe but I take canned beans and add chopped cooked bacon, onions and red pepperd diced and cooked in the bacon fat, yellow mustard, ketchup and maple syrup. Bake really low at 200 for a few hours.

Also potato salad again no recipe. Mayo, green relish, minced onion, minced celery, fresh parelsy, dash vinegar and salt and pepper with obviously cooked , peeled and cubed potatoes.

I don't do 'sweet' with my meats/meals.
Sweet is for dessert.

No grilled fruit here.

Seems that here in the US, everything, even the meats/entrees have to be sickeningly sweet. Like some kind of addiction/obsession with sugar and High Fructose Modified Corn Syrup.

.

I admit it, I love meat with sugar! Bbq sauce, teriyaki sauce, most of the good stuff that I think makes meat taste good has sugar!

we do pasta salad, baked beans, grilled veggies, chips/dip, cole slaw, pickles, corn on the cob, etc.

It depends on what you mean by BBQ.

I live in New England, if that helps :)

My DH, who lived in Alabama for 10 years, was just explaining to me the huge difference between a BBQ in New England compared to the term "BBQ" in the south.

Sometimes we just do hamburgers & hot dogs. Sometimes grilled chicken or steak. Once in a while we do ribs.

Everyone expects me to make sweet and sour cucumbers with onions and baked beans but I also have a great pasta salad recipe that tastes a lot like the sweet and sour cucumbers that is always a big hit.

If we're talking real, live BBQ--meat cooked low and slow on a smoker--I love cole slaw, especially with pulled pork. I grew up eating pulled pork sandwiches with the cole slaw on the sandwich. Great stuff.

If by BBQ you mean grilling, then I really like grilling fresh corn on the cob, and also like doing a steamed veggie packet on the grill, too. Lay out some foil and put on it some sliced zucchini, onions, peppers, mushrooms and add a little minced garlic. Salt/pepper, then add a small dab of butter and a little white wine as a steaming agent. Fold up the foil into a packet, add a couple of small holes for steam to vent, then put on the grill for 10-15 minutes.

And fruit is really good grilled, too. Peaches, nectarines, apples, oranges, pineappple, etc. get nice and caramelized, especially if you add some butter (can you tell I like butter? ;) ) and a little brown sugar. The slightly smokey flavor and caramelization go really well together.

Whether you're smoking or grilling, baked beans go great with both and a must-have for me.

Yes, those of us in the South know there is a big difference between barbecue (in NC, it is smoked pork shoulder or whole hog, chopped or pulled, or pork spareribs. Beef ribs and brisket are for Texans) and a BBQ (grilling meats like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, or steaks outdoors over fire).

With barbecue, we like red slaw (no mayo, mix cabbage with barbecue sauce), baked beans, mac n cheese, hushpuppies, Brunswick stew, and icebox pie for dessert.

For a BBQ, we do grilled corn on the cob, salad, baked beans, chips, and grilled pineapple and s'mores for dessert.

Everybody from where I live now makes Potato salad, Cole Slaw and Baked Beans for sides to BBQ but back where I came from originally, Texas, a loaded baked Potato was the most popular side item with BBQ. Here they don't even offer a baked Potato as an option.

Potato salad, baked beans, chips and cole slaw are staples around here. Even at award winning BBQ restaurants you can't get much else!!
