Fat Girls Walking Club

Hello everyone!

I hope your having good weekends!

I did my workout this morning. The first one of week 4 for me...

It involved running for 3min, and two sets of 5min runs with walks in between.

Oh boy did I feel whipped after the 2nd run of 5mins. But I made it through!

and I don't feel too many after affects.

My friend Mary626 and I went to Detroit yesterday for our Mickey Balloons!!

We got talking and I think we are going to try to do the Princess 5K in march!!!

We'll have to see how things go money wise but I would LOVE to start running my Disney races!!!

How fun Nikki!!!

I have been playing with the idea of the Princess 5K as well.
It is a 15 min/mile pacing and if I keep training I can def. do it, but I am not sure how we will be doing money wise by then, (I am planning on quitting my job and starting on a new career path in January), so I haven't quite made plans for it just yet.

I have heard it is around half way full already though.

I nearly didn't go swimming today, but I talked myself into it and it was wonderful! There was not a single cloud in the sky, the big Olympic pool had just been cleaned and the water was nice, warm and a very pretty and clear blue. Now that summer is over it is funny to see all the bigger ladies come out and do their laps still when the only other people around are the hardcore triathletes and swimmers.

Tomorrow is the recumbent bike again at the gym and Monday it is swim time after work. I need to figure out what kind of gear I need for the pool when it gets cooler outside.

ChocoKat,

It funny but every time you referred to swimming before this I pictured a pool like at my YMCA......INdoors!!! It seems so odd to this Michigander that you can swim outside! I would love to have a swimming pool outside like yours in my town! How fun!!

Yup, living in Florida has its perks. It really doesn't get very cool until November.
The air is starting to get nippy, but the good thing is that the municipal pools that stay open year round are heated, so you can still swim outside.

The only problem is getting OUT of the water :rotfl:
The sun was very warm yesterday so all I did was lounge a bit in the sunshine and I was good to go, but I'll have to figure things out when it starts getting cloudy and the wind chill hits, because it can get really really cold out.

OK I am off to the gym!

WOW Nikki ~ love the pictures & how cool are those balloons! What was the occasion? If you can afford the costs & you have a friend to train and do the Princess 5K with I say go for it! I wished I lived closer... Disneyland HM is the only Disney race on the west coast. :sad2:

ChocoKat ~ I thought you swam in a indoor pool too. Living here in WA where it rains 9 months out of the year all of our pools are indoors. I can't wait to hear all about your winter swims in the snow.

Wouldn't it be way cool if all of us could afford to run the Disney Princess 5K together. We could get matching shirts, how fun would that be. ;)

I've been MIA as well my nephew whom I use to babysit all the time when he was little wife had a baby Thursday evening. A very cute girl, hard to believe he is 26 & now a father already. Anyway my youngest son came home from college for the weekend on Friday so we visited my nephew, his wife, and my new great niece.

We had a huge rain & wind storm yesterday, a huge branch broke off a tree and landed in my front yard. Part of my town lost power, we didn't luckily. Anyhoo no walking for me yesterday due to high winds and rain. No wind today just some light rain, I'm off to shower & walk.

Keep moving forward!
Walk on! :cool2:

Okay, so I have my first running-related doctor's appointment first thing Monday. For about 2 weeks now, I've been feeling increasing pain in my meniscus (just below and to the inside of my right knee) the day after training. Friday at lunchtime, it got really bad. I had walked a couple blocks from my office to CVS to get some icy hot for it and it really didn't like doing the short walk. It hurt so bad, I wanted to cry. Also got one of those Velcro straps for just under the knee, hoping it might help (as much as I didn't want to have to wear one of those).

I ran Saturday (probably shouldn't have) with the strap on. It did hurt again fairly badly about mid-day Saturday, but not as bad as Friday. Resting it today, but I can see that it's a little bit swollen (Have I iced it? No, that would be too smart). So, I'll have the doctor take a look Monday a.m. and tell me what he thinks. Best to get it checked now, before I do some serious damage.

Hope this doesn't throw me out of my training schedule. I need to run again Monday night.

Aw Magix, please be careful.
I know it is difficult to rest, (heck read my posts leading to the 5K :rotfl: ) but it really pays off to let it all heal properly.

Of course it sounds a bit hypocritical coming from me :rolleyes1 now since I have what feels like a slightly ruptured something or another by my right shin and I keep on going anyway, but I have stopped running and just do recumbent bike and swimming for now until it recovers.

Take care of yourself! It is all part of the training!!!

The doctor gave me a prescription for some pain/anti-inflammatory pills, plus sent me for an x-ray to rule out a stress fracture. As he said, "There are all kinds of things that could be going on in there." Not sure how long I have to wait to hear back on the x-rays. I asked if I could run tonight and he said "Yeah." (dang!) So, I'm going to give it a try and, if it hurts badly, I'll just stop. I'm supposed to up it to 8 minutes running tonight, so I'm not sure how this is going to go. I'm just afraid if I don't run tonight, I'll get out of whack on my training schedule and it will be all downhill from there.

I will be careful, though, and I will stop if I feel like there's any serious problem.

So, I did my two 8 minute runs last night and it was the strangest thing... it was the best run I've yet experienced. Part of me wants to think it was because I took one of those pain/anti-inflammatory pills just before heading out, but most of me knows that had nothing to do with it. I was definitely still feeling pain, but only when I did the walking time. I slowed myself down a bit, which allowed me to get through the 8 minutes without any problem. At my usual pace, I should have done 2 2/3 laps of the track in 8 minutes, but at my slower pace I was doing 2 1/4 laps. Still, pretty good. So, I figure for these longer run times, I need to slow it down and get used to running that kind of time, then I can work on speeding it up later.

Have to say, I was very pleased with how last night went. I have had some pain in my knee, but nothing horrible as yet. I plan to ask my trainer to take it easy on my legs tonight, though, just to be safe.

It's amazing... I feared this run so much, but it turned out to be so good. Go figure.

Yeah Magix!!

I'm glad you did your run and listened to your body! Congrats on the 8 minutes!!! WOOHOO!!

I have been crazy busy at work (we laid someone off last week). I haven't done any running since Sat and am getting anxious! I WILL fit my run in tomorrow after work. I get off at 5pm so I should be able to get it in no problem!

WOO HOO Magix on the 8 minute run! You ROCK! :cool1:
I am also very glad to hear that you anti-inflammatory medication is helping with the pain! Hopefully you'll receive only good news from the doc about your x-ray.

Nikki you sound like your having the kind of week I had last week.
Remember GF it's only one week keep moving forward!

The rain and wind finally cleared today ;) we had a beautiful sunny fall day. I got out and walked on my favorite trail. It felt so good to be outside in the sun and enjoy the brisk fall air. I've got to purchase a rain coat soon, so I can continue to walk in the rain.

Keep moving forward!
Walk On :cool2:

Hello ladies!
Did a 1 and some mile walk yesterday.
I was going back to week one of my 5K training, but my legs started to really hurt around midway :confused3

I think I need to go to the doctor, like Magix, but I gained a bunch of weight back since the last time I was there, and I don't want to get scolded or feel like I let my doctor down (it has been way over a year since my last visit). I think weight issues is the number one reason why I avoid the doctor's office.

I never go until I am so miserable that if I get scolded I really don't care. I am lucky my doctor now is very sweet and thoughtful and doesn't give me much grief, but he praised me so much last time for my weight loss, I'd HATE to disappoint him:guilty:

So i am back to just walking and swimming. Ah well... maybe it'll get better with time. I am planning on shoe shopping this weekend, the shoes I have now are definitely messing with my ankles and shins, so I will be looking for proper fitted shoes for work.

I am also doggy sitting a friend's dog and I'll take him for some long walks until Friday. Keep moving forward ladies!

ChocoKat - Go to the doctor. If you get any grief, do be sure to mention you just did the EEC. In my book, that's worth an awful lot! Means you're out there doing what you can. If you were just sitting around, not even trying to do anything, THEN your doctor could give you grief.

tolemommy - I love your new avatar! Hope you find a nifty raincoat to make you feel good out there in the rain. I'm starting to think about what to wear if it starts getting cold around here. Fortunately, being in So Cal, I don't have to worry about that too much.

Still trying to figure out where I'm going to run when it gets dark earlier. I had an area sort of chosen, but it's still a bit darker than I'd prefer and there's lots of vegetation, which means there's a likelihood of those big, ugly orb spiders hanging around. I'd freak out and faint if I ran into one of those suckers. Yeah, my fear of spiders (giant spiders, especially) is enough to make me choose a different running location. I really don't want to have to run at the gym!

No word yet on the x-ray. Still on the medication and still feeling some pain, but nothing really horrible. My trainer did take it easy on my knees and just did upper body work with me last night, although now my arms are worn out and don't want to work!

ChocoKat- I agree that you should see the doctor. Any doctor who could criticize you for your weight when you are working so hard (Running a 5K!!) is crazy! I'm sure your doctor will understand. If not ask her/him the last time they ran a 5K!

Well I did not run last night. It was raining. It wasn't supposed to be raining but it was....there wasn't even green on the weather map but it was raining.

I DID run this morning after class though! I was REALLY dying during my 2nd 5minute run!!! OH BOY! I might have to do this week 4 routine for 2 weeks!!

But at least I'm moving!

I only had one 8 minute run (and two 5 minute runs) in the program for last night, but I was able to do it at my regular 12:00 mile pace this time, which made me happy. I actually extended the final 5 minute run to a 6:30 minute run, which took me back to where I'd left my water bottle.

It sure is getting dark just before the end of my run these days. Won't be long before I've got to do this at the gym. Yuck! I left a message for the athletics department at my local University (and alma mater), to ask if their track is lit every night and if it's open to the public, but, as I expected, they haven't bothered to call me back. I REALLY don't want to move my run indoors!

X-ray results came in the mail yesterday and it showed nothing unusual. Of course, reading online about stress fractures it says it's extremely difficult to diagnose them by x-ray. The doctor really didn't give me any guidance on how to deal with this pain or what it might be, so I'm not sure what to do now. I've still got the NSAID medicine, but I don't like taking pills for long.

Uh... yeah... so... I just signed up for my 3rd 5K. What's wrong with me?!? It's part of the Surf City USA Marathon event in Huntington Beach, CA (not far from me) and I just really wanted the nifty surfboard finisher's medal. It's only a week and a half after I come home from the WDW marathon weekend. Well, why not?

Magix, If you don't get any information from you doctor you should see an orthopedic doctor, or ask for Physical Therapy (don't know if california requires a script for therapy but Michigan does).

I just signed up for the 5K princess run!!!! YEAH!!!!

You'll have to add me to the list acourt!!!!!

I am doing a 5K walk tomorrow with my office. It is for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk!!

Have a great weekend!

Well I finished the 5K walk today!!!

It took us just an hour to leisurely walk the distance.

I think that I'll be able to do the 15minute mile requirement in March if I keep it up!!

Okay girls,
I have to confess that I haven't do anything exercise wise since we got home from WDW. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I just haven't been into doing it. I know, I just need to get out there. That is the reason that I haven't posted much. Guilt, I guess.

Nikki-congrats on the 5k. That is awesome. Amanda and I are doing the Princess 5k, so we will be there with you. I changed the first post to reflect that.

I am so proud of everyone! I just got home from work, so I probably with not doing anything tonight. But I promise to you girls, that I will go for a walk tomorrow morning before work.

Keep Moving Forward.

Annette :)

Hey, no worries, if you don't exercise. It happens to the best of us all the time, just keep posting, we won't scold you.

I went for two long walks this week thanks to my friend needing me to doggy sit. I did at least 2.79 Km at a very brisk pace and I wasn't even tired, it was too cool. I am going to the pool for a while tomorrow morning or maybe a 5K before meeting a friend for coffee.

Today I wanted to go to the pool, but work has been so much drama... it was like "all of my co-workers" crazy edition episode, so I had some beers with my co-worker friends and DH on Friday and today I stayed home and de-stressed... I tell ya it was a trying end of week. Lots of talks with HR, drama galore, yadda yadda yadda.

Ah well hopefully next week it'll be much better.
