Fastpass return or replacement?

So with genie basic I now have to wait for a time to be allowed to wait in the same long standby line? So that’s just slowing me down even more. No more casually strolling the park and seeing 20 minutes for Dumbo and jumping in line with the kids on a whim? What a magic-killer.

I really really hope this isn’t true.

First important thing- this is all rumor and who knows what the truth is. But secondly, if the wait is only 20 minutes, doesn't sound like the genie option would be activated. I actually thing the reserved time to get in line is better. While you're waiting to be called to join the line, you can jump in the 20 minute line you see for something else. I just don't see the advantage to standing in line for 2 hours rather than being able to move around and do other things while you wait to get in that hour long line.

THIS IS ALL UNCONFIRMED!!!!

However, the following is out there from a couple of sources that the new version of FP for WDW will be announced soon (this month). Supposedly the implementation will be October 1st or soon after.

All of these options will be implemented at the same time as a replacement to fastpass:

Lightening Pass - Paid entry into the fastpass line (much like the Paris model)

Lightening Pass Plus - Costs more than LP but straight to the front of the line

Genie Basic - Free but only allows you to book a time to join the standby line. Once in the standby line you have to wait the same as everyone else.

Genie Favourite Attractions - Free and allows you to identify a specific number of favourite attractions. You then 'may' receive an alert informing you when the standby line is low. Only some folks will receive that message though so the attraction isn't overloaded.

Genie Plus - Paid customised touring plans, much like those already offered by the Touring Plans website.

Standby - (most but not all attractions) - traditional walk up and wait.

Boarding Groups - Will continue for ROTR and will be the only way to ride Ratatouille when it opens.

To quote a penguin, "Well this sucks."

FP+, Genie, paper FP, pay per ride - I just want to know what we are dealing with so we can finalize, or cancel our plans.

I suppose I could / should work on other plans to pitch, just in case.

Are you new to the Dis?;) This is what we do! JK, but any bit of news on FP is going to stir up a lot of discussion. We are information starved!!
I keep thinking of that part from The American President: “They want leadership! They’re so thirsty for it they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they realize there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand!”

I’m thirsty!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I agree. They aren't set up to have 3 separate lines. They can't put instant access in the FP line with the regular lightning pass. Something is missing. I'm not quite buying there will be 2 versions of the lightning pass.
The only thing I could see is if regular lightning pass is you buy a "return time" for the fastpass line, and Lightning+ is you buy "Right now access!" for the fastpass line. That would justify an increased cost for the + I suppose for the really rich who dont' want to wait at all. Effectively then regular lightning is the old fastpass system without the ability to pre-book, and having to pay for every single fastpass. Lightning+ is just like if you refreshed and got lucky and found a fastpass with immediate availability.

Why is everyone flipping out about this when all we know are unsubstantiated rumors?
Flipping out about unsubstantiated rumours is actually the official sport of the Disboards. We’re hoping to sponsor an Olympic team in 2024. If interested you can start your training with general hang wringing , being snarky and know it all-ish to people on the internet , and making threats to “Maybe never go back to Disney” even though you will. Welcome to the team.

I really hope this new plan isn't true. If it is... I doubt we will go back to Disney World. After buying plane tickets, hotel, park tickets, and food, there is no money left over for fast passes. Disney World is my favorite place in the world, but this will just be too unaffordable. And I'm not going to have my family spend thousands of dollars to stand in long lines all day.

We are going to Paris next summer and we were planning to go to Disneyland and stay in one of the hotels, visit the parks, etc. After the paid fast pass was announced, everyone said, forget it. Its becoming not worth it anymore. Too structured, I go on vacation to relax, to be able to come and go as I please, not be micro managed.
You do know in DLP it’s only 8 FP rides?

So, just to put this into context for a first timer going to WDW - They book their hotel with tickets, then they have to reserve the parks they wish to visit - and hope they're available - then oince they get to the park they can either queue all day for just about every ride or buy a "Lightning or Genie" pass, per ride at $50 per ride.

Oh, and then if they want to sit down and eat they have to really book it 60 days out to ensure they can eat where they want - even though as a first timer they have no idea where the restaurants are or what kind of food they serve.

Doesn't really sound that magical.

Who is talking about $50/ride? That was one rumor about RotR specifically.

And if they want to do quick serve, they really have to order on mobile. Oh, and the quick serve restaurants require you to order sometimes an hour plus in advance at busy times.
