Fanny Pack Faux Pas

It seems as though the most serious Disney goers are all armed with fanny packs. While I might have jumped onboard 10 years ago, I just can't see myself wearing such an item. I tend to find myself having the "what are they thinking?!" mindset on them.

Are most people against the fanny with the exception of the convenience it may yield at WDW? Do you wear them elsewhere?

If you hate the fanny, what do you use? Purse? Backpack? Cargo pockets? Etc.

Thanks for any input!

This post made me laugh.. :p

I wouldn't ever consider wearing a fanny pack anywhere outside of Disney.. and for years I wouldn't wear one at Disney either. Then Sept. 11th came... with all the bag checking I wanted something really small and easy. I picked up a mickey fanny pack at the park- just large enough for my camera, some pins and my sunglasses. It is only for disney though and stays in my suitcase for the next trip when we get home.

It has really changed the way I do the parks. We used to be the family with the big backpacks that had everything, guide books, water bottles, towels, change of clothes etc. - Not any more! I love it.. I don't normally wear it around my waist though, I usually clip it together and carry it over my shoulder like a purse, but it is nice to be able to put it around my waist when i need two hands. When we stop for pictures, I hand it over to whoever is taking the picture.. don't want any pictures of me with a fanny pack!

Honestly, people at wdw are so caught up in their own vacations they don't really pay attention to anyone else. So many people have them (and wear them badly) that I don't think anyone would notice or care.

I only were a fanny pack at Disney. Just to carry my pins, autograph book and hard candy. Plus I usually were it with the pack is in front, I have trouble with my hands swelling and throbbing and this way I can rest my arms on the fanny pack and this seems to help my hands.

No fanny pack here, we hate them. We have a medium sized camera bag that holds our camera, extra film, tissues, wet wipes, chapstick. Of course we do not have children so we don't need to carry a lot.

Only at WDW do I drag out the 6 pocket Fanny Pack!::yes:: Holds my 2 cameras, Cell phone, and essentials.:p

I have a child's backpack with Snow White on it - I'm 38 years old. It works great, keeps my hands free. I don't like fanny packs, for obvious reasons, but mainly because I overload it, and it strains my back. The backpack works well when you wear glasses and have a separate set of sunglasses to store.

Only at Disney here, too. I have a fanny pack that has gone to DL with me on several trips, and it gets packed away the rest of the year. I used it briefly when training my dog, to hold treats without having to put dog food smells in my pants pockets. That's it.

We plan to bring Camelback fannys on our trip to WDW this Sept. It will have a bladder of water in it for drinking, and space for a small camera, tickets, and ID. I plan to pin some pins to the outside for trading. When I get home, it will go into storage with the other pack.

It's not a fashion statement. It's a practicality.

Everyone seems to have the responses I was hoping for. For a minute I was thinking that the fanny pack was staging a comeback!

I totally would need some storage space for small stuff: camera, chapstick, sunscreen, hairbrush, etc. My last trip I used a messenger bag, and thnking back (and seeing in pictures) it was awkward.

Anyone use those small drawstring backpack type bags made by Adidas and other companies? Those might be good, but the straps are thin and might dig into bare shoulders.

I'd still worry about bumping into someone whilst wearing a fanny pack (small world, after all!) and knowing I'd be trying to find a way to slip "You know, I never wear these anywhere else. In fact, I hate them. Really!" into conversation. :rotfl:

Only at Disney and nowhere else I promise! I like how I have easy & safe access to money, ID, lipgloss, tylenol, disposable camera, etc. Everything else goes into a backpack we share carrying.

I use a fanny pack at Disney and nowhere else. I use it to hold my sunglasses, meds, brush, money, AP, pen and maybe my son's autograph book. Some days I don't even take it into the park, I have my husband carry all my stuff:D

I couldn't stand to carry a backpack or a purse in Disney.

I'm with the others. I only wear mine at WDW. I brought a backpack once and it got in my way, so the fannypack was the most easiest for me. I hate the way it looks, but it seems like everyone wears them there! I remember when they first came out years ago and young people (I was one of them!) wore them. Then all of a sudden, senior citizens started wearing them and they became uncool. Mine just sits in my closet collecting dust until the next WDW trip. Which I hope will be soon! :D

We only use ours at DL and WDW also. I cannot stand carrying anything around my shoulders or back with so much walking and the heat. With the fannypack, you don't even notice your carrying it, and there is so many little thinks to carry, (camera, tickets, small snacks, ect. ) If fannypacs came back (fashionably) I just don't know if I would get on that band-wagon.

No fanny pack here. I use a mini backpack from LeSport. We're lucky though because we have a double umbrella stroller with two storage baskets so that makes it a little easier.

Nope, I'm a backpack girl. I cannot bring myself to wear a fanny pack. Even the visual of myself wearing one will make me ill. I don't think I have a good fannypack kind of shape. :)

I wear a mini-backpack that I found on sale for $3! I just can't bring myself to wearing a fannypack, plus I find that the backpack is more comfy, anyway.

This summer is the first time in years that I purchased a purse. I like fanny packs. It keeps my hands free & I don't have to worry about forgetting it. It doesn't bother my back or my shoulders. If it bothers other people that's their problem not mine. It looks like I'm the only desenter here. At least I'm comfortable.

OK...I guess I am an odd ball, I wear my WDW fanny pack at other places. BUT...only other theme parks or the State Fair which are long walking all day affairs...I love my WDW so much though, it is so handy, even though I do have other ones I grab it.

My DH has a big one he puts our digital camera and a bunch of other stuff in...he would NEVER dream of wearing one anywhere else.

I much prefer a fanny pack to a big back pack which would hurt my back..I have a bad back and I once carried a regular purse all day at WDW and hurt my back. Fanny packs seem to be ok though as they are light weight and not heavily loaded....:sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

There's only one place I would be caught with a fanny bag on and I'll bet you can all guess where that would be! :earsgirl:

can not bring myself to wear a fanny pack ( or as my mother so elegantly calls them , a" belly bag") we bought a cam corder rectangluar case at wall mart for $14. the straps lock in place for around the waist or over the shoulder but we carried it over the shoulder. it fit everything including my slr camera and fit by our side on every ride we went on. it worked great. i also bought a cute little purse in china ( epcot) 5x7" flat envelope of fabric with a shoulder strap that fit my room key, pass, hairbrush , weighted nothing and was $5! i put it away for next time it worked so well
