Facebook Banned from DIS!

My $.02

We're really talking about 3 groups/things

1. The disboards/cruise meet threads - clearly owned by dreams unlimited. Its been around for years, & many of us

2. The facebook meet pages - In their purest form, I really don't have a problem with them. Many people use facebook on a daily basis & some like the convenience of only keeping up with one social media. (We run into this same debate in our neighborhood - "nextdoor" site vs. the neighborhood Facebook page). When I first noticed them popping up, it seemed like just an organic offshoot of your individual cruise-meet thread. Mostly started by disboard members taking their individual cruise-meet thread to the next level. Maybe even as a way to avoid disboard rules on discussing certain topics - not really sure - and really doesn't bother me if they did.

3. The Disney Cruising facebook page - This is where I feel things get a little murky. Its basically a facebook page set up in the model of a facebook version of the disboard's Disney Cruise section. Also, if boiled down to its purest form, I'm not sure most folks wouldn't have a problem it. However it appears to be started & run by a travel agent just like disboards, but not as openly as the disboards is run by DU. They have just as many, if not more, rules than the disboards. (I've seen posts get deleted so fast your head would spin - they call it "poof")

They list the facebook meet threads & discuss fish extenders & door decorations. Not that disboards has a patent on those things or anything, but I could see some bad-blood watching them get co-opted on a competitor travel agent's site.

Long story even longer, I can really see both sides of the arguement. The traditions of the meets, fish extenders, door decorating all started here on the disboards. Not everyone does facebook so some feel left out, but for the people on facebook many find it more convenient than disboards since they get on facebook everyday anyway (LOL). Add the tie-in to the disney cruising facebook page - which is run by a travel agent competitor to dreams unlimited - and I could see why they wouldn't want the facebook pages promoted on disboards

My sharing my pictures of my room on a FB page has prompted many people to private message me asking where we got the gift baskets that were on our dining room table. They switched or booked with DU when they I told them about where it came from as well as their OBC that they were not getting with their TA's.. So in actuality, me having the link enabled them to gain business and not lose business. The DIS also has a FB page..

Why? Because the DIS app for Ipad and Iphone is so riduculously slow, when it even works, which is rare these days

I can definitely agree on that :lmao::lmao:
I finally gave up on it & started accessing disboards with safari.

All your thoughts/your feelings/your habits/your pictures/your family / your careers and every "private' cruise group you happily join.
There is no security.

I still don't understand the issue. Doesn't every corporation do this? I have absolutely no problem with this. Other companies/organization already find out what my salary is, who I voted for, etc. Not sure that the information Facebook collects is any more intrusive.

TXDCLfan is not wrong. Read Shmoo's post quoted above. She didn't say a specific FB group, she referred to FB as a whole. That is incorrect. What private FB groups choose to do is not the same as what FB allows.

Thank you :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

That's scary! :scared1: Woody

This is exactly why I have not joined the cruise meet FB page for my upcoming cruise. My FB page has very personal information, locations, pictures of my children, etc that I reserve for close friends only. I do not want to share that with the entire ship. Although you hope everyone on the FB page is safe, you never know. I prefer the anonymity of DIS which allows me to make conscious connections with those I choose.

You can lock your FB down so that only certain people can see certain things. It can be a bit of a hassle but it is there.

It was simply in response to all the posts here which imply that somehow FB users can afford to be completely naked and exposed on that site because they've convinced themselves that they're wrapped in an invisible protective shroud. Even to the point they've opened phone APP portals directly on their persons with realtime pinpoint accuracy to their exact location and entire personal networks running 24/7.

I can't comprehend the logic behind it.

I was a mod for this forum for about three years, so completely understand what is involved and how unwelcomed you are received much of the time. It is a volunteer position here as well with no compensation and requires a great deal of your time. I was simply pointing out that enforcing this change would be extremely difficult due to the fact that the board doesn't have a dedicated moderator. The only mod listed now is TNRobin and the last time she posted on the DIS was on 12/12/12 if you look at her profile. Two other mods stepped down about a year ago. If the desire is for the DIS to be more active, then my suggestion is to spend some time cleaning up the forum with UTD links at the top of the board, as well as making sure threads are where they should be located in order to make it easier for people to navigate the boards. When a mod or WM edits a post, it notates that at the bottom of the post with the date and time. There are only three posts that have been edited on this thread, and two of them are yours. The other was edited by the poster themselves as well. I still see posts here that were made last night vocally against the change. If some were deleted, they all would have been.

It's a difficult one isn't. I won't ask why you stepped down!!!

You can't please everyone no matter what you do. I have admined several FB groups for our DCL cruises over the years and also participated in the cruise meet threads here on the DIS. Several years ago I was on a Disboard cruise meet thread that was very active, chatty and fun. The thread wound up having a part one, two, three etc. Some people complained about the off topic posts and activity because they couldn't keep up with the constant posting or find information easily and as a result rarely participated in the thread. I started the Dismeet thread and FB group for what will be our 14th DCL cruise next summer. There are some in the Dismeet thread that have stated they don't do FB. I gave the suggestion of creating a FB account with their Disboard name so they could participate if they wished and still not have people IRL find them on FB. Some did. Others said they wouldn't, even with a fake FB account which is fine. All of the relevant cruise, travel information, FE, Secret Mickey sign up etc. that is shared on FB I also post one page one in our Dis meet thread so no one will be left out of any activities and relevant cruise information. I post a weekly countdown on the DIS meet thread to keep it active. I have seen people in both groups, post something to try and start a conversation or share information on the Dismeet thread and there is very little if any feedback and/or response in some instances. Lack of participation and feedback is not conducive to getting to know your fellow cruisers. Meanwhile, the FB group is very active. I think people comfortable with FB are more inclined to chat and get to know one another. The group is private. As gatekeeper, I PM each person who asks to join and ask them to PM me or post on the DIS as part of my vetting process. Spammers and people who aren't really on the sailing will either not respond or tell me they are not on the sailing. For those who claim they are not allowed to join their FB cruise groups, it is possible the admin PM'd them to make sure they are on the sailing and the message went into their "other" FB message inbox and they aren't aware. Several in our FB group had never heard of the Disboards and as a result of the FB group have since come to the Disboards. Personally, I think banning social media links here on the Disboards will simply encourage less participation on the Disboards.

Is "Secret Mickey" like "Secret Santa" or just another name for "Hidden Mickey?"

Wish I would have made a dummy/fake FB account. Now my DD's middle school friends, my HS class mates, Girl Scout Parents and PTO members know I'm going on an expensive vacation and my house will be empty. I really didn't want anyone to know. If somebody brought up going on a cruise, especially an Disney Cruise, you can't shut me up. Otherwise I'd say over the holiday break "we have a lot of stuff planned." People often hear me saying I'm going to go visit my parents who live a few hours away.

This is where fb users fall way short! To think that people don't build their identities up for more followers or even outright lie to look more desirable is a critical mistake.

I know personally of a former Diser who used multiple ID's on here, got caught and had multiple ID's and "walls" on fb with followers named John F. Kennedy and Kelly Green. Give me a break.

She even quoted herself and spoke back and forth on both our cruise meet and facebook page and could be on every one of your facebook groups!

She had Husbands, children, aunts , uncles, you name it, she used it complete with fake pictures. Until you are duped like this you have a false sense of security.

I can verify that this really happened! It was crazy, and the person was  crazier? or a control freak? or multiple personalities? Who knew? In any event, she was banned from Dis, and said she was not going on the cruise, afterall... Or did she? Or is she back on Dis under yet another name?popcorn:: I hope not, but I cannot use the limited brain power I have left to care.

This is all too much, and I hate the idea that because I am an over-communicator, that someone with evil ways, or too much time on their hands can use my own words against me. So, I will pray for them, and try to keep my thoughts and ideas closer to the vest. People (who think mining other people's info seems like a good idea) , there are volunteer opportunities everywhere...use some of that energy for good!:cloud9::littleangel:

Facebook can do quite a few things… If you know how to activate or restrict those activities. Sadly a large percentage of us are not text savvy. Media was known as ABC NBC and Time & US magazine. DISBoards is like going to the restaurant reading the menu, ordering your meal, and eating. Facebook requires more work for set up. It's like going to your in-laws house making dinner using their appliances, not knowing where the utensils are, or that you have to grind your own pepper and make your own lemon juice for the recipe.

For almost a year and a half I couldn't read comments that came under somebody's Facebook post. It shows my current job is a 1980s census taker which I haven't done since 1980. Yes, I'm over 50.

Secret Mickey is like Secret Santa. We also have an FE group, but some people want to participate in an exchange but don't want to have to fly internationally with lots of FE stuff taking up luggage space. I guess Secret Mickey works for that. It is only one gift for one person in the $20 range.

That was exactly why I suggested Disboard name FB accounts. Some people with FB don't want their IRL friends and family knowing about their cruise. Our group is closed so only members of the group can see posts. Some simply don't do FB IRL but were perfectly fine with making an anonymous account like Snow Whyt :goodvibes

When you belong to a secret or private group on FB, those posts don't show up on your news feed and you don't have to be friends with all the members, so they don't see your regular FB posts either.

I think it's a good idea, even though I have a FB account as well. However, my DW does not have and will never have a FB account. It seems like the meet threads I have been a part of lately have basically steered you away from the DIS meet thread to the FB group. Everyone should realize that not all have a FB account, but spend lots of time on DIS.

I've seen several people mention that if you do not facebook that you can always start a second group here on DISboards.

That is a good idealistic idea!

I tried that on my last cruise on the very first post I said this was a group for DIS members and to please not take it over to FB!

And within 2 pages of doing so there were 4 different post saying come join us on facebook with a link to the other groups FB group.

Not very nice in my opinion to highjack a group like that. We ended up with no group and it just turned me off to all the FB groups.

This just shows how little you understand about FBs privacy and security settings. :sad2:

Joining a closed, private, secret FB cruise meet group does NOT mean you automatically become friends with all in the group. If you have your settings for your personal FB page set to "Only Friends" than not one person on your FB cruise meet page will be able to see anything on your personal FB page UNLESS you decide to add them to your personal FB Friends list.

All those people afraid of FB should instead LEARN about it. Knowledge is power!

Besides being able to unfriend anyone you want, you can also change the individual privacy settings for every single thing you post on FB!

I have a whole group of nosey friends and family relegated to seeing only a very occasional post around holiday time with a pic of the kids. Otherwise, they see nothing but my cover photo and profile pic, and I still show up as their "Friend". VERY easy to make sure only those I chose to see something can actually see it!

Again: People, people! Learn about FB and its many privacy settings and friend list options! Become informed!

And using FB will be a pleasure and a joy! But spend the time and do the work setting it up. It is worth it because FB is such an awesome way to keep in touch with people over long distances and share and chronicle your life!
