Fab Five heads back to the Happiest Place on Earth

Yeah I rented the 10-22 for the week. I was using it for the tripod but it was a wash out for me. I needed better practice. I had tried before in KC with the tripod for July 4th but we had rain that night and the fireworks were cancelled. I was thinking of going to Friday Night Fireworks at Kaufmann Stadium (Royals) but it never panned out. What do you find for best settings, lenses, and such for shooting fireworks?

Don't feel bad. That was my exact same experience with my Sigma 30mm f1.4 on our Halloween trip to the world last fall. I didn't have a chance to work with it at all before the trip. I sew Halloween costumes, and had been working around the clock just to get the work done before leaving for our own fun. Photography practice just wasn't going to happen.

Unfortunately the result was less than stellar photos in some circumstances. I also wanted to implement some of the photography suggestions for fireworks. I ended up with a lot of nice clear photos, but with half open bursts and half trails. I learned from that and felt I did a lot better this summer at DL!

Here's what I did:

1) Camera on tripod
2) focus to infinity
3) remote shutter release
4) full manual
5) aperture set to f11 (or somewhere around there)
6) ISO 100 so I could leave the shutter open as long as possible
7) shutter speed varied, but I tried HARD to resist my impatience and leave it open as long as I could stand. I never really had a problem with overexposing the shot. I tended to use 8-10 seconds, but went shorter with really bright bursts, and longer with less bright bursts. Pretty scientific, huh?

I like your shots of the California sign. I took mine one day, and the next day we came it was redone in the rainbow colors like it is now.

Looks like your early AM shots had an overcast sky too. That was GREAT for keeping the temps down, but some nice blue skies would have been nice too! Did you have ANY sunny early AM's??? We were only there 3 mornings, but it was overcast every time.

Every morning was cloudy and cool. Too bad. It was nice to enjoy but not great for pictures. It felt like early June when we had been there before and what they call the "june gloom" because it would burn off by afternoon each day and just be perfect.

Wonderful trip report! Your pictures are always incredible, people like you make me ashamed to post my own from my cheesy camera.\

On a sidenote, I am so sorry about the loss of your dad and your wife having cancer. But so glad you and your family got to go on this vacation, you all definitely deserved it.

We are set to stay at GCH in January for our third time there, can't wait and yes those lounge chairs at the pool are amazing. I want one for home!

I am really enjoying your trip report. I am pleased that your health issues resolved as well as they did. I like the fact that the two of you are sharing the trip report it makes it more fun for all of us.

There are no bad shots of Disneyland!!!!! Thanks for the nice comments.

We wanted to do something different this time around. I'm usually photo heavy and the wife is more of a details girl. Guess that's why we do so well together! We are coming up on 20 years together this November. Wish we could see Disney at Christmas!! (hint hint).

Thanks kaoden39!!

Twenty years that's great! My DH and I hit 18 years in less than two weeks.:goodvibes

Day 4 - Catalina or Bust

So this vacation was to be more about relaxing and taking it easy. We had done Disneyland and California the last three years. They have been glorious to say the least. Our first visit to DL was in October and we got to see not only DL for the first time but we witnessed Remember Dreams Come True, HM overlay (love that!), and see all the decorations. The next year was the vacation that has ranked #1 since....we went to San Diego for three days before we went to DL. In San Diego we splurged because we wanted something on the ocean and we didn't want to take any chances. Final result was the Hotel Del Coronado. Wow. The history, elegance and charm of this establishment are overwhelming. Expensive? Yes! But the location is so worth it. The kids enjoyed the salt water swimming pool, the oversized hot tub, and the views were ones people dream of. Oh yeah DL wasn't too bad either. The third year was suppose to be the grand finale. We flew into LAX and then drove to Monterey. From there we went to San Francisco for the day and then on to Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is one of those places that everyone has to see before they die. It is literally heaven on earth. The waterfalls were so massive and had such force. It was all so good. We then drove back down to DL for a few days.

Alright so we had been burning the candle down pretty far each of the first few nights. The plan was to go to Catalina on Friday. I had been researching all the different scenarios on how to get over there. I really also wanted to visit Newport Beach too. I finally found that I could do both and if you knew me then that would be the way to go! Try to cram as much as you can to see and do everything is my motto.:rotfl2: So we had just closed down the park the night before. I looked at my wife when we were going to sleep and said we are not going to make it are we? I then told her that we should sleep in. This was suppose to be a relaxing vacation. So we wake up late the next morning. How I love the extra two hours from KC. I'm still recovering from it today. Does this mean I'm really getting old? Don't answer that question. I'm like Mickey Mouse. I might be old but I still got it after all these EARS! :rotfl2: So its morning and my wife can see that I'm a little sad. We ended up having lunch at ESPN Zone. It was the first time we ever ate there. I have to say it was really good. It was also really expensive. Two of us had hamburgers and I had the chicken parm sandwich. So we are walking out and my wife tells me its not too late to rent a car and drive to Newport. I look at her and say no its ok. She persists and the next thing I know we are at the GC customer relations and they are booking us an economy car with Alamo. We get the kids ready and we head off to Downtown Disney's Alamo. Painless. It didn't take us very long to get down to Newport either. I really wanted to find Corona Del Mar. I had heard so many good things. So it was a quest. I kept driving down the PCH looking for some kind of sign. We kept driving and driving. Finally i saw the sign. Yippee. Here is what we saw as we drew closer.

I knew this as going to be a good day. Here are some more beach shots. I must say it was something out of a postcard. We had seen several beaches before as we drove up from Newport one year all the way to Hollywood. I didn't think much of most expcept for Laguna which was much more south than Newport. It as just a perfect crescent shaped beach. Luxurious high dollar houses above the cliff. The dream for most of us.

Let me stop here and say thank you to my wife. I had such an amazing day here. Funny story. So me and my son are out in the ocean fighting through the crashing waves trying to work our way where we can just float and relax in about shoulder high waves. We do just that. Everyone knows that waves keep coming and sometimes they are gentler and sometimes they come in stronger. So both of us take our eyes off the situation and look back towards the girls on the beach and the big one is coming for us. It crests before we can turn around and see it and completely knocks us on our cans. It was one of those OMG I'm going to die moments. It knocked me down, drug me on the bottom of the ocean skinning my knee up and then the water was ripping me back in. I get up and thank God that I'm alright. I look for my son and he had the same experience. The ocean is so powerful. It's funny how in just 5-10 seconds one can feel like minutes have just transpired and you feel like its all over. How silly am I?

So we spend a few hours there and then decide to drive back up to Newport to see what was happening. We stumbled upon this.

It was the Catalina Flyer. Sherry my go to Diser on all things Catalina again I must say sorry. When both my wife and I saw it we though lets forgo a day at DL and do it tomorrow. We then walked down the boardwalk a little further and saw they had several cruises available. We both wanted to be on the ocean this time around. We found a simple little cruise that toured the harbor showing billionaire homes and then would take us out on the ocean for a sunset cruise. Let's do it! It was well worth the money. It was under $20 per person for an adult. The cruise was very relaxing. When we finally got out on the ocean he turned off the engine and just floated for a little bit. Those are some mighty waves I tell you. We went around some seal on a buoy and enjoyed the sun setting what looked like over the Santa Monica Mtns. Gorgeous. Here are some more shots.

This kind of cool. A wedding cruise ship. What a cool idea. We saw the bride and groom and the waiting crowd in which looked like the first dance. Probably pretty expensive but cool idea.

We ended up driving home later that night. All of us so happy to say that we had been on the Pacific Ocean, had some beach time, and had a relaxing day. Catalina didn't happen but it is still on my bucket list. Currently at home its Shark Week on Discovery Channel and they are showing footage from 2008 when there were several shark attacks along the Pacific Coast. One in Huntington and one scary one of a lady who went kayaking in Catalina while here Husband and two kids were on a bigger boat that was anchored. Her kayak was turned over by the shark (it ended up being a great white) and she swam for her life to her kids. Her oldest as yelling at the dad explaining the situation and he was trying to pull up the anchor to bring the boat to her. Somehow someway she was able to reach another person's smaller boat who helped pull her in. I can't remember how far she had to swim but it was far. She said as she swam as fast as she could away that the shark hit his fin against her three times. Can you imagine?

Day 5 is ahead. Stay tuned.

The go-Catalina person is here!!:cool1::cool1:

Actually, I've been here from the start, reading along and enjoying all the great DLR photos, but I just decided to pop in and speak up now!!

I love how you both are telling the story together - it adds a really nice touch to the TR!!

Love that sunset photo above! And all the GCH photos are absolutely stunning!!

Anyway, as I've said before - I think it worked out for the best that you all did not try to cram Newport Beach and Catalina into the same day. Once you get to Catalina (eventually), you will understand what I mean.

First of all, it's best to have a reservation on the boat well in advance of your trip - and the Flyer has very limited departures so if you don't book in advance you run the risk of not getting over to the island when you want to. Paying the kind of money that is required for boat fare will make you realize when arriving in Avalon that you want to have as much time as possible to really see what there is to see over there. You want to be able to do at least a few of the signature Catalina things like renting the golf cart, visiting the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden, going on the Semi-Sub, taking an interior island tour and seeing the buffalo, maybe doing the Casino tour (if you like architecture), taking the wonderful Flying Fish tour, dining at a couple of the best restaurants there, etc.

You would have barely had time to do much of anything if you had done Catalina in the same day as Newport or anything else. You really need to be able to devote a whole entire day to Catalina, from early morning to evening, to be able to get much done. Going for a few hours would not be worth the lofty fee for boat fare. I had some friends take the Flyer out to meet me in Avalon many years ago, and it seemed like as soon as we got one thing done, it was time for them to turn around and go home because the last Flyer boat was leaving already to go back to Newport.

That's the other thing I would suggest - next time you are out here and can work Catalina into the schedule, try to abandon the idea of leaving from Newport and taking the Flyer, and instead leave from Long Beach on the Catalina Express. You will have much more flexibility in your planning and schedule that way. The Flyer really is only good to take if you are staying overnight in Avalon. For one-day trips only, the Express is soooooo much better!!

I watched that same episode and thought yeah thats why I won't swim in the ocean:lmao::rotfl: P.S. I really love Shark Week on Discovery!!!
Really enjoying your TR so far and sounds like you guys had a great trip! I am hoping ours goes as well for our first Halloween time at DLR!!!

So glad you made it to Newport! The Pacific with its sunsets is so beautiful and about the only thing that can tear me away from DL when I am in Southern CA!

Years ago when my son was about 9, I had a similar wave experience in Marco Island Florida. We both got swept away and it was terrifying for a few seconds that felt much longer. We still talk about it 6 years later. I don't turn my back on the ocean anymore!

What beautiful pictures. I love the sunset picture.

Thanks again for the nice comments. Here are some more random shots while we wait on my wife to get the next episode underway.

7/20/10 – 7/26/10

The sights and smells are delightfully overwhelming as you are walking to the park. Disney really knows how to take you to a place that really is the happiest place on earth. Nothing compares to it. When I walk through the turnstile and I am greeted by that big beautiful Mickey face, tears fill up in my eyes. I can’t let any of my family see my face because they would think something is wrong. They would not understand that I’m just overwhelmed by that wonderful feeling I only get when I’m stepping in this magical land. We head down Main Street. I’m loved the American flag banners. It really takes you back to those good old days. Sleepy’s Castle looks as beautiful as always.

I know just how you feel and you put it so beautifully. Thank you:)

KCMike, thank you, thank you so much for the beautiful Newport photos! Just a couple weeks away for us (with our 3-day stop at Disneyland first!) Makes me very homesick for our favorite beach.

And as usual, I have to second Sherry's suggestion that you make it to Catalina next time! I just can't believe how expensive the Catalina Flyer is these days, so the next time we go, it will likely be for an overnight. But I do love waving to the flyer on our morning walk to Balboa Island! Did you have time to walk over to Marine Avenue on Balboa Island?

Great trip report - really enjoying the details and the wonderful photos!

Glad I found this before it ended! Your pictures are great!

I was taping a special on big bands on public television and guess where they hosted the show? Catalina. Salt in my wounds.

Glad I found this before it ended! Your pictures are great!

Thanks for reading along. I am a novice in taking shots but I have to say that I do enjoy it. I love to follow the POTD on the dis dl community board. There are so many great photographers out there.

Alright how about a little fun with this next post? Can anyone guess where this picture was taken?
