Can someone explain borrowing of points to me. I think I have a good understanding of banking, however what are the rules on borrowing? (How far in advance, etc.)

if i used all my pts in the prior use year, and i don't have enough pts in my current UY, then i have to borrow pts from the next UY to make a reservation.

if i cancel that reservation, the borrowed pts cannot be returned to their original UY and will expire at the end of my current UY.

you would only borrow pts to make a reservation, it's not a random decision...

You can borrow your next UY points from the time of you vacation. So technically you could borrow 2 UY in advance.......example, if we are in the 07UY and you book a trip in your 08UY you could borrow 09UY points to cover that 08 trip. Also borrowed points can not be banked. Hope this helps..

Example: you have Sep use year; you call now 11 months out to book a stay in Jan 09; your "current" use year points for that stay are ones to be issued Sep 08; if you don't have enough for that Jan 09 trip, you can borrow any amount of additional points needed from those to be issued Sep 09. Once points are borrowed, they stay borrowed, if you cancel the trip you cannot send those borrowed points back to the use year that begins Sep 09, and they must be used for a trip that ends by Aug 31, 2009. You never borrow except when making a reservation.

Here is what I plan, please tell me if I am wrong.

We have 225 points and my Mom will be adding 50 points to our account (they will be hers but in our account under our name). We will all be going on a cruise in January 2010 and we (my DH and me and kids) will be using our points to pay for ours and maybe some cash for one of our kids, my mom will also be using her points to pay for hers.

My family will have 225 points come available on December 1, 2008 (08 UY) and 225 come available on December 1, 2009 (09 UY). Our cruise will probably cost about 525 points (unless we pay cash for one kid). Which means we will have to borrow 60-75 points from 2010 UY. Can this be done or am I out of the allowed date ranges? Same thing for my Mom, she needs about 150, she will have 50 for '08, 50 for '09 and will need to borrow 50 for '10.

Your cruise falls in your 2009 Use Year - so you may use points banked from you 2008 UY, current points from your 2009 UY and points borrowed from your 2010 UY and you can make that reservation at this time since DCL reservations may be reserved up to 2 years ahead (as long as DCL has made the cruise available ). DVC may not know the actual points needed yet, since the cruise points are negotiated later.

Enjoy! :)
