Is the point system good only for certain resorts? I see where people are saving money renting points rather than calling and making reservations. I'm trying to understand the system.

Renting points is something that takes place between an owner of one of the Disney Vacation Club timeshares. While it is possible to rent points for one of the non-DVC resorts, it is not a great value. The DVC resorts are timeshares that have studio, 1,2, and 3 bedroom villas. Old Key West, Boardwalk Villas, Beach Club Villas, Villas Wilderness Lodge and Saratoga Springs Resort are the DVC resorts. I suggest you read the frequently asked questions at the top of this page as well as on the rent trade board.

you can use DVC points at all the DVC resorts plus the WDW deluxe and moderate - plus DL and a ton of other places.

However your best deal (by far) is for the DVC resorts.

they are OKW, VWL, SSR, BCV and BWV on WDW property - off - HH and VB.

You get the best deal for points going with a DVC resort. Using points at a WDW resort (not DVC) will cost your money.

However in my opinion the best of WDW resorts is the DVC resorts!!!!

in price (using points)

OKW
BWV standard
SSR
BWV preferred, BCV and VWL - all the same

did this help or am I just confusing you more?

When you buy into DVC, you purchase points that are 'based' at one of the DVC properties. Those points enable the owner to make a ressie 11 months ahead to the exclusion of others who own points at another DVC resort.

Points (under a bunch of rules) can be used for another DVC resort (other than the one you might own) 7 months ahead.

Points may also be used to book ressies at most other WDW resorts (non DVC).

You can also participate in the Intervale Internation--a points exchange service which could permit you to use your points to say at many other places around the world.

As far as "saving" goes, there tons of "discussions" about that here if you do a search. Some contend that simply staying at WDW using points saves you money vs paying even a discounted cash price. Others will have differing opinions.

Renting out points is a way to raise cash to pay your annual 'dues' on your ownership interest.

HTH -- you asked a very 'big' question!

:)

Since you are planning on renting and not owning, I think the simple answer is the resorts I mentioned as DVC resorts are going to rent cheaper from an owner than the deluxe resorts are going to rent from either CRO or a DVC member.
