Explain DAS please?

Could someone explain the DAS process to me please? We have used it in the past for our son but they keep changing how it’s done and I’m more confused than ever.

We are only in the parks 1 day (pre-cruise). I understand there is an online pre-approval process? But CAN you just get it in the park when you get there?

In the past we could go to a ride and just ask for a return time. Is that still possible or do things have to be pre-scheduled?

Yes, you can still stop at Guest Relations at the theme park and sign up for DAS.

If you pre-register using chat, they can establish 2 DAS return times. While in the theme park, you now use the MDE mobile app to get DAS return times.
 
The first post of THIS THREAD explains the current DAS procedures.

It is not required to register in advance by video call; you may do so in-person at the parks just like in the past. If you choose to pre-register you will be eligible for a bonus of 2 DAS "Advanced Selections" which are similar to the old pre-scheduled FP+. However many folks find these are not very useful to their touring timeline and end up skipping them anyway.

In the parks, DAS is now available within the MDE app. You can schedule your own Return Times instead of going to the attraction. This saves some crisscrossing and backtracking, or sending a runner ahead.

Otherwise, DAS works and acts pretty much the same as it did previously. Just more technology access now.
 
We have only gotten it at the parks, never did online. Same exact process as it's been.
 

Nothing has really changed except that you can pre apply with video chat. And depending on when the last time that you went was, you can now make your return selections in the app so that you don't have to go to each individual ride anymore. They have become strict on the only 6 people total also. Other than that, it is exactly the same as it has been since it came out.
 
How intrusive is the questioning?

My wife would clearly qualify as she has lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. She is a very private person and downplays her illness. She would have to be pushed to request any accommodation and if she felt someone doubted her she would just walk away.

If she applied and explained she had lupus and rheumatoid arthritis would that be sufficient

She will have to explain her needs related to waiting in a standard queue environment. Not the diagnosis. The why or the what happens kind of thing. Not medical jargon.

Many people use a wheelchair, ECV or other mobility device at WDW who don’t use one in daily life. It is a LOT of walking — like 6-12 miles a day for multiple days in a row. DAS doesn’t help with all that, only the waiting location. Many who use DAS find they walk even more because they have to walk to somewhere while waiting for the Return Time. I suggest she rethink appearing strong and utilize the tools at her disposal to conserve her energy. Is she familiar with the spoon theory?

Now if she has needs unrelated to stamina, she can focus her DAS request on those issues.

Also, most lines have the majority of the line inside or shaded.
There are a few rides that are totally outside - like Magic Carpets of Aladdin - but even there, the waiting area is mostly shaded

I don't know anything about her issues, but just wanted to say if she won't use a wheelchair perhaps a rollator might be something she would use. It's a walker with wheels and a seat. She can walk all she wants but has a seat for a rest when she needs it. Some areas at disney a bench, low wall, or even a large rock can be hard to find.

I suggest researching rental agencies and bookmarking/listing those that offer equipment that may be helpful. That way, you'll have some idea of what to inquire about should the need arise.

Unless you're pretty strong, I don't suggest a manual wheelchair. There are a lot of subtle slopes in WDW pavement that aren't evident to a person walking. That there are means you could easily be in pain and exhausted trying to push her wheelchair unless you're quite fit. And, the pavement often is decoratively uneven to look like stonework, resulting in more effort to push a chair. It's not smooth going most places there by any means.

Once your wife experiences the strain that walking at WDW can be, she may be much more willing to consider a mobility aid. With some resources in readiness, you'll be ready to go online or call and find out what is available.

we probably should not script what people should say to get a das. Seems ripe for abuse. Not referring to the person asking but in general. Especially considering we do not know why the person needs it
I was coming along to post the same thing. I think it is also against the rules
