Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

My injury list continues... the tightness I had in my calves seems to have mostly gone, but is replaced by a painful something in my left leg. It's to the inside of my shin, slightly lower than mid-way between my knee and ankle. To the touch, it feels like a deep bruise. It twinges painfully at random times as I walk around in daily life, barely hurts when running and hurts quite a bit when walking fast. Wait, it gets more interesting - after taking 3 days off, I did a walk/run yesterday of 2:00 walks/ 1:00 runs in my Ascis with lots of stability. It hurt. Afterward, I took off the Asics and put on my Mizuno Wave Precisions, which aren't quite minimalist, but have a lot less technology and stability than my Asics... after a couple minutes walking the pain was much less! So I took them off and got back on the treadmill for a minute or two barefoot... NO pain at all. Hmmm. I don't know what to make of it. :confused: Can't decide whether to take more time off, keep training but barefoot on the 'mill, go outside in the Mizunos, or none of the above. I have a pair of insoles on order and will try them when they get here on the 25th. This is so frustrating! :headache:

This sounds similar to the shin splints I had awhile ago. Exact same place and it would twinge randomly. I went about a week with no running, only walking. And I started doing stretching a few times a day. It is OK now. I still get shin splints in that leg some if I try to run longer lengths of time or too fast. But they go away after I run, so I think the stretching is working.

We can DEFINITELY take it!! glad you can share it with us and I feel for you too :( I hope things start loosening up soon and I have no advice b/c you got me stumped too!!! :confused3 If it doesn't start feeling better soon with your shoes on or off you should see someone about it maybe? Sending lots of pixie dust and prayers your way for it though!! pixiedust:
Thanks Kim! :goodvibes I'll definitely see a doc if it does't start getting better soon. I stayed off of it yesterday and it feels better today, so I think I'll take the rest of this week off entirely.

Hey guys. Check these out :goodvibes DD and I will be wearing these for the race!! To go with our name - STOKED COCONUTS!
Super cute! :thumbsup2

That's so good to hear - thank you! :hug: I've definitely found that stretching, even doing ballet, yoga and pilates workouts in lieu of running, helps, so that's encouraging.

Another thing to try is to take some time and walk on your heels with your feet/toes pointing up. This is bad running form, but this will help strengthen the muscles in the shin. Not a muscle many of us think about training.

:thumbsup2 I've been doing that to and from the printer at work this week! I look insane, but whatever. ;)

I can just picture your co-workers looking at you like you're nuts. ;)

Come work with us they know we are nuts with our weird 'training' habits we've started... 2 of us have started walking the outside steps at work atleast once a day (I work at the Contemporary so thats 14 flights of stairs since we start at 2 go to 1 then up to the cali grill observation desk then back to 1 then back to 2 (where our office is) We've taken almost a minute off our time (currently 3.5 up 2.5 down) and hope eventually to get it down to 5 min (3 up 2 down)

We have yet to get any other participants :rotfl2:

I went to the allergist yesterday to get my shot, and they turned me down because of my head cold. When I did my long run the other day, I could only go about 1.8 miles. Heavy breathing caused my throat to hurt and I couldn't go the full 5K.

The nurse was super nice and told me to take Mucinex DM as directed on the box, neti pot twice a day, Afrin twice a day and my rescue inhaler 4 times a day until Friday morning, and then call them if I'm not getting any better. I guess I feel slightly better this morning, but not at 100%. To be perfectly honest, I've constantly had something pretty much since August. I think I've only been "healthy" for about 7-8 weeks total since then.

Ironically, I started working at the daycare in August....Coincidence??? I think not!

I seriously considered asking off for this week to make sure I wasn't exposed to anything new right before EEC. Why didn't I do that???

::yes:: Luckily my immediate coworker's the only one who sees much of me and she's a runner, too.

:rotfl: I'd be there with ya!

Ugh! I'm sorry. Yep, kids are a cesspool of germ activity; I spent the first 4 years of my son's life sick with every darned bug that came around. Hope the meds work fast and you feel 1000% better by the 5th!

Good news, good news... I did a 2-mile walk last night with no pain! The weather was beyond beautiful - our last cold front before the long, hot summer - and it was hard not to run, but my son held me back and insisted on doing my running for me, so at least he got in a nice workout. I'm scheduled to do 6 miles Sat. and there's no way that'll happen. I've just accepted that I won't be finishing my 10K training plan. Instead, I'll work on getting my leg healthy again through May and then start on the TOT 10-Miler plan. :thumbsup2

Yes, I remember those days when I was in an office. Try stretching you achilles by leaning against a door instead of a wall. Then you can hear jokes all day about not knowing whether to push or pull a door to open it. Good times.

Now I work out of my house.

I plan to take my small camera, since I am still kicking myself that I didn't take it when I did the 5K during marathon weekend in January....

I have always taken my camera during Disney runs but wondering if its worth it for this one, not sure how dark it is. I took it on the Wine & Dine and got a handful of character pics but I assume no characters on this so do I really need it :confused3

I may skip the camera and use my phone's camera since I'll need to put it away during obstacles anyway. But I definitely want some picture-taking device!

I never even thought about characters because neither my DS nor I like character interaction. Are there really none? That's make the boy happy! :rotfl:

I'm thinking of just going with my phone's camera as well. I don't want to deal with it through any obstacles.

Is it worth it to take a camera on the course or is it really too dark?

I didn't take a camera for the race last year, and I kind of regreted not having any pics to show afterwards. I'm taking a point and shoot this year and am hoping to get at least a few decent shots.:confused3

As far as the characters go...Mickey Mouse was on top of a jeep and Baloo did a character meet and greet near the 3 mile marker.

Okay...this might sound nuts, but the closer we get to the race, the less I want to run.:eek: For the last two weeks I've gotten 3 5Ks in a week, but I have had zero motivation to exercise. My last run was Saturday morning, and it's now Wednesday.:sad2: I've gone on long walks yesterday and Monday, but no runs.

I'm a strange one....I would've thought now would be the time I'm super motivated. :confused3 Then again, I think I'm already in vacation mode, because I haven't had much motivation to work and cook and clean, either.:rotfl2:

It's not just you - I havn't been able to get a run in lately either :( I had a GREAT week last week and got in 2 good 5K runs but havn't run since Saturday and now i'm out of luck b/c i'm finishing things up - heading to bed early and up before dawn so that's it - no more 5K's for me between now and the race :scared1:
hopefully that will console you - bc I'll definitely be out of practice. LOL. I really want to get in a few runs on the trip but I know I will NOT do 5K and I'll actually be lucky if I DO even get them in. LOL.

At this point I'm just hoping for the best.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
so, I'm leaving tomorrow early but we'll have wifi in our condo and in airports so I'll be sure to check in LOTS :)
Wondering if your all willing to wait and do an 11:30 meet after the race?? I had said 11 and pushed it to 11:15 before wanting to accomodate those that didn't want to stick around but I'm thinking I'll be in one of the later waves and doing the calculations like this...
start - 9:50 (or so??)
finish race - 10:35
finish hunt - 11:10 (giving myself 40 min)
so I'm pretty sure I won't be making it to the 11:15 meet up LOL. So I wouldn't make it until the 11:45 meet but I don't want to miss seeing anyone.
Any suggestions??
I want to take water and a camera. But I don't want to be juggling stuff while I'm running. Ugh! I run without water at home, but it's much cooler than it will be there. I had planned to check some stuff at the bag check too - a jacket and pants for afterwards. But now I'm reading that there will be a long line to get your stuff back so am rethinking what to take.
I have never done an EEC, but with all the other runDisney 5K's and vast majority of the ½'s I've done, the line to retrieve your bag was minimal (glaring exception being the inaugural Wine & Dine)
So just a little OT story here I had to share~
DS17 and I are doing the EEC together. He's grown up with a love of all things climbing/Mt. Everest since he was young. He knows every factoid there is about Mt. Everest and has done lots of high adventure kind of stuff~ his dream is to go to Base Camp there some day. (The real one)
We also love watching Amazing Race together and always talk about what we would do if we were running the race together.
So doing this challenge together is really special since it's a more realistic version of our dreams. :goodvibes
We are so excited planning our weekend.
Then, 2 days ago, he finds his car covered with window paint reading "PROM?"
When is Prom? You guessed it... May 5th.
I was surprised at how last minute the invite is but it seems like that is not uncommon, for a lot of kids are just asking each other now.
It is not for his school, it's for Prom at the girl's school.
He has a chance to ask her to his (he goes to an all boy's school), but he really likes this girl and I feel bad that he'll have to give it up. He says he's fine with it and our weekend is special and he wouldn't miss it for the world. I still want to give him an out if he wants it. I know he's torn in his mind but says he still wants to do the EEC. He's so sweet, but as a mom I have guilt he's doing something with me when he should be experiencing those HS milestones. :upsidedow
Worst. Line. EVER!! Soooo glad I didn't bag check that race! :)
