Okay, I finished my long run today and it was great! I did several things different, so I don't know if it was one or a combo of all that helped me out. My time ended up being 14:23/mile, and I was on the treadmill! (Way too hot to run outside today!)
I changed my intervals to a 30 second run/45 second walk, and I know that helped me to keep from getting worn out. I know it's kind of late in the game to change up my workout, but I was worried about working out while I'm still getting over a head cold and I didn't want to be struggling with it.
Now I just have two short runs before the BIG long run!
I hope everyone else is having a great weekend!!

It's approached the point of obsessive, now, hasn't it?! Another Mother Runner had a giveaway not long ago for a pair of Altra running shoes, which is how I first heard of them.
I swear, Altra's last must have been modeled on my very own feet! They're ugly as sin, but shaped perfectly for me. Personally, I wouldn't necessarily call them minimalist: they feel quite supportive to me, but in all the right ways - very balanced. And I live in flat footwear - flip flops, Chuck Taylors, ballet flats, etc. - so the zero-drop feels right, whereas the big differential between heel and forefoot height in traditional running shoes always feels unaccustomed and awkward to me. I haven't run in them yet, so the jury's still out on that. But they were ideal for a ton of squats, lunges and upper body moves, as well as a speedy walk. I'm excited to run in them tonight!

I'm not a mom, so I can't say I know exactly how torn you must be, but the first thing that came to mind when reading your story was that I'm guessing he has a pretty good head on his shoulders and has been taught well to make good decisions for himself...by YOU! I hope that by him recognizing that this race and time spent with you will be special to him, that you are filled with a great sense of accomplishment! I mean, come on! A teenager choosing to hang with his mom over a girl he likes!?! Does that EVER happen!?!
