Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Okay, I finished my long run today and it was great! I did several things different, so I don't know if it was one or a combo of all that helped me out. My time ended up being 14:23/mile, and I was on the treadmill! (Way too hot to run outside today!)

I changed my intervals to a 30 second run/45 second walk, and I know that helped me to keep from getting worn out. I know it's kind of late in the game to change up my workout, but I was worried about working out while I'm still getting over a head cold and I didn't want to be struggling with it.

Now I just have two short runs before the BIG long run! :yay:

I hope everyone else is having a great weekend!!

My last strength work out today, now 3 runs this week and then I'm off to Florida for a long weekend.

If anyone else is going solo and wants to team up on the scavenger hunt, please let me know.

Hey - I am solo! We should try to find each other.
Are you a run runner?:moped:

That's terrific news - way to go! :woohoo:

I'm full of good news this morning and hoping I don't jinx anything by saying it out loud, lol! I started running again and so far, so good; I'm not pain-free, but it's so much less and I can really feel that that stupid muscle is healing nicely. :thumbsup2

And I got yet another new pair of running shoes. :rotfl: It's approached the point of obsessive, now, hasn't it?! Another Mother Runner had a giveaway not long ago for a pair of Altra running shoes, which is how I first heard of them.

They're zero-drop and fall into the minimalist category. I did some reading, but didn't think about them again until a friend bought a pair last week and gave them a beyond-glowing review. Intrigued, I found a local shop that sells them and tried a pair... :cloud9: I swear, Altra's last must have been modeled on my very own feet! They're ugly as sin, but shaped perfectly for me. Personally, I wouldn't necessarily call them minimalist: they feel quite supportive to me, but in all the right ways - very balanced. And I live in flat footwear - flip flops, Chuck Taylors, ballet flats, etc. - so the zero-drop feels right, whereas the big differential between heel and forefoot height in traditional running shoes always feels unaccustomed and awkward to me. I haven't run in them yet, so the jury's still out on that. But they were ideal for a ton of squats, lunges and upper body moves, as well as a speedy walk. I'm excited to run in them tonight!

Four days to go - I'm mostly packed and more than ready to get to my Happy Place. :moped:

I'll have to tell my mother about these shoes. She wears nothing but flip-flops, and she's been having major foot issues with her running shoes (she has 3 different pairs that don't work.). I'm sure she might like these if she gives them a try.:thumbsup2

I can't believe the race is THIS WEEK!!!! :yay::woohoo:

Nope, I'm not a run runner. I'm a walk/jog/run runner. how about you? I'm going more for the experience and to try an event before I start training for the 10 mile race in September.

I am a walk/jog person. I really can't run yet until I lose some more weight. But I try to do the Jeff Galloway method, with a 2 minute brisk walk and then jog for a minute if I can. I also like his reminders that you should use the red yellow green light method when running a 5k. If you start full force on the green light, you won't have good energy to finish.

2 more days and I will be on property!! I have a pile of clothes in the corner of my bedroom waiting for me to pack it all up!!

I'm right there with you! :thumbsup2 DH is the one who wanted to start running Disney races. I think his boss or one of his co-workers told him about W&D in November, and that was the first one we looked into. Then he found the ToT in September, and really liked the idea of that one with the villain after party. Then I cam across the EEC, and we both thought it was a good idea to get our feet wet with it first. We are already registered for the ToT, mainly because we didn't want to pay an increase fee after the first deadline. But if I can do a 10 miler, then I can do a 1/2 marathon.

Our plan now is to see if there is a discount for registering for W&D while we are at the EEC. I think someone posted pretty early in this thread that they will sometimes do that. If not, then we can still register before the price hike when we get home.

I'm also a walk/jog/run runner. DH is at about a 10:30 mile, and my best time on the treadmill has been 14:24, so he's going to have to majorly slow down for me. He's says he okay with that, but I know he's going to push me Saturday night. I just hope we can work together well in figuring out the clues.

This is me as well. Sounds like there's a lot of us walk/jog/run runners in this race. :thumbsup2 I'm also going for the experience and to see how a Disney race is before the 10 miler in September.

Safe travels to everyone and I'll see y'all Saturday night. Now to figure out what to pack, I'm such a procrastinator. :lmao:

Definitely worth checking out! I ran in them last night... no good. The toe part was awesome, but the heel isn't tight enough and the zero-drop was too much for my wrecked Achilles. They're still fantastic for walking and cross-training, though. :thumbsup2

Yep, I'm in that group, too!

EEK, I've got today two days to go and still need to get stuff together!

I'm leaving to go pick up my teammate and head to the airport in just THREE hours...FINALLY! woo hooooooo!!!! I may not get a chance to get back on before I leave, but will be checking the boards this week while we're there...hopefully the new Wi-fi in all the resorts will be working smoothly. Was there ever a definite time/place decided on for a meet after the race? If there is, could someone post it and we'll try to make it. GOOD LUCK everyone...I know we're all going to do great and, most importatnly, have a BLAST! :thumbsup2

I was wondering the same thing. I keep thinking 11:30 at that spot behind Flame Tree, or was it at Nemo? Or did we decide on two?

Enjoy the race everyone!!! I can't wait to hear the details when y'all get back!!

DS11 and I are definitely in for next year!

Oh, what a tough spot to be in! I'm not a mom, so I can't say I know exactly how torn you must be, but the first thing that came to mind when reading your story was that I'm guessing he has a pretty good head on his shoulders and has been taught well to make good decisions for himself...by YOU! I hope that by him recognizing that this race and time spent with you will be special to him, that you are filled with a great sense of accomplishment! I mean, come on! A teenager choosing to hang with his mom over a girl he likes!?! Does that EVER happen!?! :lmao: Personally, I think he's right...this will be a special memory for the both of you, and he won't really be missing a huge milestone...he'll still get to go to his own prom, and hopefully with the same girl he really likes. Oh and the bonus here...it's a little test for the girl...if your son doesn't go with her, and explains why, her reaction either way just might tell him alot about her :)

I've only done one WDW race, but there was absolutely no line at the Tangled 5K's bag check. :thumbsup2

First, I think I understand completely how you two feel about this, because my DS9 and I are huge Everest buffs, too! I always joke about someday serving up burritos at Base Camp, but the EEC is a far more realistic prospect for me, too. ;)

Second, NO MOM GUILT! That's from one mom to another. He's reacting as he is because you trained him up right; be very, very proud of that accomplishment. :cheer2:

Thanks for your kind words, Cripey and PrincessV!
DS and I are on as planned for our trip and he is taking his date to his prom so he has the best of both worlds. He is a great kid and I can't wait to have a blast together this coming weekend!

It seems like many are travelling off to WDW already~ have a great and safe trip everyone and best wishes and fun for Saturday!

**I have one last question for those who have done this in prior yearss**
Is there any merchandise sold (Disney and running gear) at the packet pickup like the Expos (assuming not as large)? Or is it just packet pickup?
Thanks!

Sounds like you and me might be doing the same thing. I'm going more for the adventure.

Let me know if you want to try and meet up.

I'm really worried about my times. I had a long day (much like walking around the parks) and ran 3 miles tonight. I did not finish in the allotted time. Does anyone know how strict they are on the pace? :/

I'm now picturing myself trying to outrun the wagon as they chase me with a net.

In past years there's been some basic merchandise. Definitely shirts and maybe other stuff like hats. Sorry I can't remember exactly.

In other news I got an email from RunDisney today that they'll have a special gift at packet pickup for runners who will be doing EEC for the 5th time... that's me! I'm excited to see what the gift will be. I have a long workday tomorrow, then last minute packing, and a long travel day on Thursday. Leaving the house at 7:30am (Pacific) and arriving at Orlando airport at 10pm. It will be such a relief to arrive at WDW so my vacation can finally begin!

Thanks! I just won't expect to spend a lot of time walking through an "expo" like during the Marathon weekend.

A special gift...how fun! You'll have to let us know what it is!:listen:

Have a great trip!

Well, I leave tomorrow and by dinnertime I should be on Disney property!!
I so need to pack - I am useless here at work!

Oh - a 5 time special gift, you will so need to share what you got! Not share, but inform share - oh you know what I mean!

I am still up for the meet at 11:30. Flame Tree is good for me. Lets go with that. If it is blocked off, our secondary location - Nemo entrance!

Oh yeah!! :cool1:
