Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Okay after reading the final instructions I have two questions/concerns and I know the Disboards is the perfect place to ask ;)

#1 - Kids race at 8:30......EEC runners need to be in their corral at 8:45 :confused3 HELP! DD is running the kids race, hubby and I running the EEC (grandparents are there to watch DD while we run) but we totally want to see her run. Does anyone know how long the kids race is and if we can get to our corral in enough time. The EEC only starts at 9:30, do they let you in your corral late?

#2 - Do we need to wear our post party wrist bands while running? I want to give DD mine, I have no interest in the post race party and her fave ride is Everest so we wanted DD and hubby to attend the party. Are we able to leave AK and then they go back in with the wrist bands?

#3 - Grandparents and DD will be waiting for us in the parking lot, do you think there is somewhere for them to sit? My mom has bad back and legs so can't be standing for that long.

Thanks everyone, just want to be fully prepared!

Based on the prior two year's of events, here is my take on your questions.

1 - Although I don't have kids, so I can't say with certainty, the kids races are usually fairly quick, and the location is the exact same parking lot as the corrals for the race, just on the other side of the baggage check. I watched the first kids race last year, then had time to hand in my baggage before heading to the corral area. The "be in your corral" time is the time that you should be in that parking lot and mentally ready. But as long as you are in your running gear, bibs on, sneakers laced, you should most likely have no issues watching the kids races and walking across the parking lot in order to get into your corral. Obviously, the later your corral, the easier this will be. So if you are in the first corral, your timing may be more rushed, but if you are in the third or fourth corral, this is even less of a stress.

2 - You absolutely do have to wear the wristband for the afterparty during the run. Otherwise you will not be allowed to enter the park for the scavenger hunt portion of the event. (unless this is dramatically different than in prior years) Since the 5k part of the event takes you back out of the park, that wristband is what allows you to enter the park/run past bag check to complete the scavenger hunt portion inside the park. ((However, if the scavenger hunt this year truly takes place entirely in the parking lot, this answer may be wrong. But if the scavenger hunt finish line is inside the park - which has been true for each of the prior years - then, there is no way to finish the race and cross the finish line without having that band on, at least not officially)).

3 - I haven't ever seen any actual seating in the parking lot, but the ground can be sat down on, since no cars are driving around.

I feel bad that two of my answers are basically no, but hopefully its somewhat helpful anyway.

Could your Mom bring along one of those little cane/stools to sit on?

Just wanted to note, in case you wanted to save a few bucks and have one less item to worry about...

You can hydrate before a 5k and get through it just fine. In the hour before, just slowly sip from a water bottle. I usually get through about 12oz. You'll also have water available there, before, during and after the race too. No need to try and do obstacles with your water bottles on your waist!

Oh, and if you want even less to carry, get the running shorts or capris that have the zipper pouch on the back, right inside the waistband. It's just enough room for a key and a card or two. :)

thanks for this info. I did my 5k outside today and I didn't take any water and i was fine so I'm rethinking taking my water into the race now. LOL

As some of you saw on our FB group, I broke my foot yesterday morning during my daily run. :(

I was running with my dad and we moved to the side of the sidewalk to let some walkers pass. Well, I got too close to the edge of the sidewalk and my foot just rolled off. Thankfully my dad was there because I blacked out right after it happened! :scared:

After a trip to the ER yesterday they determined I broke my foot. They told me that even if it was just sprained that I wouldn't be able to run for at least a month. :(

I'm SO upset. My mom is going to take my place in our team so I will still be able to be at EE. She is so sweet and even offered to give me her shirt and medal.

So, long story short: I'll be there to cheer you all on! Wave if you see a tall blonde girl in a leg cast!
oh my gosh!!! I'm SO SORRY!!! That is SO good that your dad was there! I run by myself all the time and now I'm going to be sure to let DH know my route always and a time to expect me back. I hope you heal up real fast and if I see you I'll be sure to wave

Brief update:

I think I am coming down with a mild cold. I'm sure it's because I over extended myself last week and didn't really get much rest. I got my second short run in on Friday, but didn't do as well as I would have liked. My long run is supposed to be today. I think I will stay inside on the treadmill and just go for as long as I can. Hopefully, I'll be all better within the next 13 days! Until then, I'll be dosing myself with vitamin c and zinc!!

The good news is that I finally found a sports bra!!
I was about to give up at the PGA store, when I found several sports bras on a clearance rack. I ended up getting a Nike Compression bra for about $20. It's a bit snug, but it fits! I'm glad I found something there, because I didn't find anything at the outlet mall.

awe!!! colds SUCK!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery. and that's GREAT that you found a bra and WOW! What a GREAT price you got it for too!!!

I've had a sore hamstring for a week or so; kept hoping I could work it out but yesterday I overdid it. :( No more training for me for at least a few days.

ooops! Those DARN hamstrings hey :headache: Mine still gives me a bit of grief from time to time as well. it's so annoying!

Yikes! I feel so unprepared for this event. Work has been crazy, so I haven't been running as much. Was hoping to run in 30 minutes and I'm still at about a 38 minute run. Argh!!!

I'm now fearful of being swept up as being too slow!

do you mean 38 min for the 5K??? b/c that's AWESOME!!!!!

So after alot of MISERABLE weather I was finally able to get back outside and run today. Having my treadmill up a 1 to 1.5 incline has definitely helped to prepare me more and i found that with a 1min walk to aprox. 2 min jog rotation seems to keep me strong for most of my run and I was able to complete my outside run of 5K in just under 41 minutes today!
YAY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm ready to go!!!

I have to get in 1 more 5K run this week before we leave on Thursday so that this can be my strongest week for training and next week will be lots of walking in the parks with a few little runs so hopefully it'll count as my slower week leading up to the race. I hope to do my last 5K on Tues or Wed with a LONG LONG LONG walk afterwards too so it'll be like a 5K run followed by lots of walking for the scavenger hunt portion.

ok, I'm babbling now. Mon, Tues, Wed and then I LEAVE ON VACATION YAY!

Congratulations, Kim, on your great time!

And congrats to almost vacation -- woo hoo!!!! Hard to believe we're less than two weeks away.

thanks for this info. I did my 5k outside today and I didn't take any water and i was fine so I'm rethinking taking my water into the race now.
FWIW, even here in FL, even in 90-degrees and full sun, even though I'm half Italian and don't "glisten" - I SWEAT! - I don't take water with me for a 5K. So long as you're hydrated pre-race and grab something post-race, you should be fine and I wouldn't want to juggle water along with obstacles and clue solving. :thumbsup2

Wooo hooo! :cheer2:

Super-woooo hooo!!!!

I think I am coming down with a mild cold.
Gah! Hope it leaves quickly!

The good news is that I finally found a sports bra!!
Yay! :yay:

But DH has gone out of town for work this week, so my only distractions are the KigerKats, and it's naptime for them...pretty much all the time.
:rotfl2: This made me smile - I have two geriatric cats and it really is nap time pretty much ALL the time!

I've had a sore hamstring for a week or so; kept hoping I could work it out but yesterday I overdid it. :( No more training for me for at least a few days.
Ugh, I'm sorry. Feel better soon!

Was hoping to run in 30 minutes and I'm still at about a 38 minute run. Argh!!!

What, 38:00 for a 5K? That's great! Definitely no sweeping there. :cool1:

Can you stand a post of the "Woe is me!" variety?!

It's been a "fun" week around here... Leo, my DS, came down with Fifth Disease and has been covered in a rash. It doesn't seem to be getting him down much, but my mother got it, too, and it's making her joints ache terribly. So far, I can't tell if I'm infected or not; I never ran a fever, though I had cold-like symptoms - but that could be allergies, too. Hoping it's missed me.

My injury list continues... the tightness I had in my calves seems to have mostly gone, but is replaced by a painful something in my left leg. It's to the inside of my shin, slightly lower than mid-way between my knee and ankle. To the touch, it feels like a deep bruise. It twinges painfully at random times as I walk around in daily life, barely hurts when running and hurts quite a bit when walking fast. Wait, it gets more interesting - after taking 3 days off, I did a walk/run yesterday of 2:00 walks/ 1:00 runs in my Ascis with lots of stability. It hurt. Afterward, I took off the Asics and put on my Mizuno Wave Precisions, which aren't quite minimalist, but have a lot less technology and stability than my Asics... after a couple minutes walking the pain was much less! So I took them off and got back on the treadmill for a minute or two barefoot... NO pain at all. Hmmm. I don't know what to make of it. Can't decide whether to take more time off, keep training but barefoot on the 'mill, go outside in the Mizunos, or none of the above. I have a pair of insoles on order and will try them when they get here on the 25th. This is so frustrating! :headache:

Is there anyway to get tickets from people having to cancel for whatever reason?

I don't have anything to offer in the way of medical advice - just wanted to say - AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! That truly must be so frustrating...I'm so sorry! I hope you and the rest of your family heal quickly and that you don't catch what is going around.

So my little teammate is just coming out of her skin with excitement for this trip! She called me last night to say that since we're leaving in only 8 days, that she really needs to start packing. :lmao: She should maybe take a second look at the size of her suitcase. I'm super excited too, but probably won't start packing until this sunday, since we don't leave until Tuesday afternoon. We'll be closing our trip with the race!

And on a non-race topic...did anyone get out to see Disney Nature's Chimpanzee yesterday? It was so good, but African Cats from last year is still my favorite so far! I just love those films. The BF takes me on opening day every year and then "santa" puts the DVD in my stocking at Christmas.

I'm sorry this is such a frustrating time!

If you've already had experience with shin splints, then you'll know if that is the cause of your twinge or not, but it sounds like it could be from the description. Keep stretching your calves - tight calves is one of the big causes of shin splints.

I saw this link on the Dis - can't remember where right now - but there are some great tips. http://www.racewalk.com/Strength/ShinExercises01.asp

I hope it gets better soon!

I hate seeing this list of injuries - even more I hate adding myself to that list as I reinjured my back on Saturday by being flipped off a bench at my cousin's house. She was sitting on the other end and got up quickly - making me topple off the other end into the corner of the dining room and into a table with stuff all over it. Man, it was not pretty!
I did aqua aerobics that morning and it went well. Did some stretching on my back yesterday afternoon.
Am planning to do some casual walking on the treadmill tonight as everything I read says to stay active.

I have so much to do to get ready, I want to pack now too!!

FB page? We have a FB page?
Can someone either post the link or send me a PM?

Thanks!

Thanks Tiki! I've had shin splints on the outside of my tibia and this is different - it feels more like a muscle pull because it's sooo localized; the pain is in a little 2"x2" ish spot - bot NOT on my tibia, so I'm feeling pretty sure it can't be a stress fracture. It started when I did Zumba with tight calves and I suspect all that twisting and pivoting did me in. Stupid cross-training.

Noooooooo! :guilty: Ugh. It's sounds positive, though, that aqua aerobics went well!

We can DEFINITELY take it!! glad you can share it with us and I feel for you too :( I hope things start loosening up soon and I have no advice b/c you got me stumped too!!! :confused3 If it doesn't start feeling better soon with your shoes on or off you should see someone about it maybe? Sending lots of pixie dust and prayers your way for it though!! pixiedust:

We havn't seen it yet either - but very much so wanting to! Glad to hear it was so good :)

Hey guys. Check these out :goodvibes DD and I will be wearing these for the race!! To go with our name - STOKED COCONUTS! DD didn't want to be all matchy matchy so I hired a friend of hers that makes clay charms to make these up for us. They are supposed to be coconuts on a surfboard and i see she made the surfboards with points at either end but that's ok - i think they are adorable anyway.

So, here are our "Stoked Coconuts"

I just need to get the leather cord to wear them on. She does silver metal type chains and I didn't want to wear something that hard for racing in so I'll have to pick up something to wear them as necklaces.
