My husband wants to do the mayan ruins/chocolate tour. I'm not super interested and I think the kids (6 &4) will be super bored (and hot). So we are considering splitting up and he would go with my stepson (13) to the ruin/chocolate/beach break excursion, while I take the little ones just to the beach break and they can join us at the end when they get to the beach break part of the excursion. Am I wrong in assuming it's the same beach? Can we book 2 separate excursions and split up?
TIA

I don't think it's the same beach when I read the reviews. That is if he is going to the ship-boat-bus-ruin one. Check reviews on line at travel websites that review these things. Your beach is closer and his is near the ruins. But since I'm not clear on which ruin tour he's on you might check reviews.

DW and I have done separate excursions a couple of times, including one of us going on an excursion and the other staying on the ship. When you book your excursions, you will be asked to select those who are going on it. The process will also let you know if you're trying to book any excursions with overlapping times if you want to do more than one excursion that day.

What do you do for the rest of the time, if you have a short excursion?

At most ports we usually do short excursions or just something quick on our own. We purposely do this so that we can be back on the ship enjoying it with relatively lesser crowds. Another advantage to this, when doing something on our own, is we don't have to worry about being back on board on time. We are always back nice and early.

My parents went to a coffee shop(Starbucks I think) I found them and about 40 other people there. Since you will have the younger ones maybe you should just plan some pool time after your event. I understand the crowd is way down and you can even get a seat at the pool! Short lines at water ride/slide. Lots of people of said great things about the plan.

When we cruised with my parents they when on a ruins / beach excursion and we just did the beach with our son. Although our tours were the same length, theirs started earlier than ours. We did end up on the same beach - though we didn't know for sure that we would in advance. We overlapped by about an hour before they had to go back to the ship.
