Every guest entering at IG went through metal detector

The guy who tried to bring a gun in was not sane by how it sounded.

He is a lawyer if that clarifies his level of sanity ;)

If Disney is going to mandate metal detectors they are going to need to do it either at bag check and create a further backup or have metal detectors in multiple places.....

<sarcasm> Why don't we just set up a border style checkpoint for everyone entering Dis property. They can ask if we have anything to declare and do vehicle searches, canine sniffing etc. <sarcasm end>

I can also tell you that when my husband has his gun on him, you cannot see it "sticking out" like this guys gun in his pants. They would not have stopped someone carrying correctly without a metal detector. And I do not think this guy would have been caught every time. Some checkers may not have been as vigilant.

In my experience, a well trained eye can pick concealed carry out pretty quickly. This is why Dis security was not making eye contact with anyone in the lines. They were looking at belt lines for printing and sagging.

There have been more than a few stories over the years of people having a gun on their person or in their bag and Disney catching it. Bag checkers aren't their main security..just the visible security.

4 metal detectors outside MK during crowds like the photos posted are, imo, nothing more than theatre.. Given thE reports that people have just been ignoring the request to walk through the metal detectors and security hasn't pursued them, it further feels like just theatre. Something put in place that will make "the public" feel better while not actually adding much security.

I was at Disney from Dec. 19-27 and it seemed the only time I got sent through the metal detectors was when I entered Epcot through the IG. Supposedly, they were looking for pockets that were stuffed and I usually out everything in my pockets. I was asked 5 times in 8 days and my dad was asked 4 times as well. Also, he has a hip replacement and the metal detectors never went off, which makes me question how good they are!

Replacement body parts are usually made from titanium alloys. Event metal detectors tend to be more sensitive to iron and high carbon/nickel steel alloys. The stuff guns and knives are made from.

There was a man who tried to get in with a gun a few weeks ago and almost succeeded. He had it in his pants. The security person noticed he was acting strange and called over more security, but who knows if all of the bag checkers would have been that vigilant. A metal detector would have stopped this.

I also feel that in general it acts as a deterrent. When people wanting to commit a terrorist attack would see security has been stepped up in general and they are really taking this seriously they may think twice. It can't hurt and can only help, therefore I'm all for it.

It may act as a deterrent against your average joe who decides to bring his gun to WDW, who has no intentions of shooting anyone. However, it's not going to deter a major terrorist attack or a crazy person determined to kill people because his mommy didn't hug him enough when he was a child and no one likes him. Those people don't think twice. Because they are crazy and evil.

All the terrorists have to do is set off three suicide bombers at rope drop in front of magic kingdom. Metal detectors won't help you there. Massive destruction. That's what I worry about.

I love that option, but what about those people that try to sneak on property through the woods and swamp? Should we get more gators? Maybe we can build a wall around the property.....it's working for the Mexican border right?

I asked the question because they were checking every guest. That was a change based on my other times entering the parks since they added the detectors. I want sure if it was a change of if it was unique
I'm surprised they didn't do it from the start like they stated they would. Seems then they were working their way up to everyone being scanned. I would hope everyone was scanned.

That is not at all what I said, and I don't appreciate the words being put in my mouth.

My position is that the security disney already had in place before adding the detectors was, and is, far *more* effective than the metal detectors are.
That's your opinion, not a fact. Just like my post is an opinion, not a fact. Nobody knows how many people it would or wouldn't deter. But apparently Disney seems to agree with me.

And what hasn't been mentioned to all who say "I don't care if it's theater or ineffective, just give me MOAR and MOAR and MOAR security"...

Security is not free...it's REALLY not free...so every additional layer, whether for theater or not, has to be paid for...when tickets go up another 20% this year and we still have no more new attractions to justify the price, you can't really complain...

No, probably not. And people who aren't sane generally don't care about rules and procedures either. People not thinkin rationally aren't going to think about deterrents the way others do.

Unfortunately there is usually quite a lot of planning put into these tragedies. Hence the reason they seek soft targets.

Well, apparently Disney seems to agree with me.

Personally, I think disney implemented it to make people happy more so than adding any real security.

I'm honestly happy it makes you feel safe. Choke points like that make me feel much less safe, as I have no reason to expect that anyone truly intent on doing harm will bother to wait to go through security to do so.

I understand where you are coming from, I just disagree. And while yes, I obviously want my daughter to be as safe as possible, I also don't want her growing up in a world where she has to go through metal detectors and body scanners to go to any major public space...a grocery store, a mall, a movie theatre, an amusement park. That day will come, most likely, and I find that very sad.

This isn't coming from Disney, this is coming from much higher up. That's why Universal and Sea World rolled out the same procedures at the same time (or somewhat the same.) They're doing what they've been advised to do. What they have in place now wouldn't stop each and every terrorist or lone gunman from attacking the parks, but maybe they received a specific threat and the procedures they've put into place would stop that for now. We really don't know what they know or why they're making these decisions.
