My job is 100% work from home.

My wife and I have been looking at renting a house on Oahu for June and July. I can work from anywhere as long as I have internet. I could use two weeks of vacation as Friday, Monday making it mostly 3 day work weeks and 4 day weekends maximizing our vacation time.

Thoughts?

First thought why are you living in Atlanta? Guessing it’s family . Sounds great to meOahu is great. I was Stationed there. You will have a great time.

If it were me I'd rent on the big island. It would be much cheaper and we really like the big island much better. We've done long-term rentals there several times and they're pretty easy to get.

While I like visiting the Big Island, i always feel like I am driving forever compared to Oahu or Maui. If we stay on the Hilo side it feels like we are always driving to the Kona side and if we stay on the Kona side it feels like we are always driving to the Hilo side.

We didn't do it for the summer, but we've rented places for a month in the winter (we live in NE and like to escape the cold/snow). Once I retire we plan to spend Jan, Feb & March in warmer locals. Right now the plan is for 30 days in 3 different places.

We own a cottage at the lake so we don't rent anything in the summer.
That seems like a long time to rent in a really touristy area. Isn't Hawaii more of a winter getaway than a summer one?
I would go cheaper and rent a nice cabin at a lake instead.

The climate is more wet/dry vs hot/cold. There is not a large difference in seasons.

If I could do a 2-3 month rental in Hawaii I would do it in a heartbeat. I would probably do a month on the Big Island and a month on Kauai. However, I would do Oahu if I had to. You can always island hop for the weekend.

I've never done it, but jobs and cost make that impossible for us. If you can do it and know you'll enjoy it, why not?
How do your kids feel about spending their entire school break there? Are they kids who really like/enjoy spending some of that time with their friends? If so, maybe make it a month rather than two, or something like that?
Whatever you decide, enjoy! :)

Well, good luck to you. It doesn't sound the least bit appealing to me. I think my kids would mutiny at being thousands of miles from home for so long--2 weeks is about our limit. I would also be too nervous about all the things that could possibly go wrong, back at the house. Of course, I also think Hawaii is vastly overrated to begin with, but I wouldn't want to do 2 months anywhere else, either.

That’s me, I stay anywhere for more than a week and I’m ready to move along.

What if you did a month on Oahu and a month on another island, like Maui? It would help to break it up a little bit and save on costs from island hopping, if that's something you're considering doing while there. Or even one month in the North Shore and one month in Kailua (for example), just to experience different parts of Oahu. My parents do VRBO/Airbnb rentals for the winter in Florida and stay in two different areas for one month each. They prefer one month rentals because its usually easier to find a place for just a month, and they're also not locked in for their full stay in Florida if they happen to not care much for the unit or the area after a while.

Are you considering the summer months because of kids and school? Otherwise, I would consider doing winter months to get out of potentially cold weather where you live. Hawaii can also be hot in the summer, and pretty busy with fellow summer vacationers.

IMO, I think it would be cost prohibitive to rent and live there for two months. When my parents go to Florida, they drive so they are not limited on what they can bring. They also have their car with them. Going to Hawaii, everything you bring will have to fit in your luggage, and you'd presumably have to do a long term car rental which adds to the cost. But, I do think it would be a fun and memorable experience, and if you have the finances and means to do it, then go for it! Its not a long term thing and you're not locked into anything beyond two months, so not a whole lot to lose. If you find yourselves homesick or antsy after a few weeks, then you know what your limit is for next time.

I can see that. We are not big Kona fans, so when we go there we usually fly into Kona, drive to the Hilo side and stay there for the entire trip. But if you're doing a lot of driving back and forth I can see where it would get tedious!

Have you thought about the Caribbean? Lots of options there. Might be cheaper overall, if you're factoring in finances.

My family spent almost a month in the summer on St. John in a rented house when I was in college. The island is small and I believe about 70% of it is preserved park land. If you're looking for gorgeous beaches, awesome snorkeling, not many tourists, and more relaxation than adventure, it's definitely a place to consider. St. Thomas is also just a ferry ride away.

I'm always up for traveling and to experience a new place, so I think it's a great idea! DH & I said if we worked from home we would be cruising constantly. So enjoy the adventure wherever you decide to go!

Heck if you work from home anyways why not go to Hawaii in the winter but of course you do live in Georgia.........so would it be cooler for you and your family in the summer?

And no I've never wanted to go anywhere for 3 months. Love my home and area too much to leave for that long.
