Hi. I'm looking at staying at FW during a trip. I don't like to rent a car at WDW. Is a car a must when staying at the FW cabins?

Do people stay there and not go to the parks for a few days during their visit?

Also, is it possible to get a cabin near the restaurant and boat dock (to go to MK)?

Thank you! :)

We have only used a car once in all of the times we've stayed at FW and that was to go to Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We always plan days to just be at FW... in fact our last visit was for 10 days and we only went to the parks 3 days. There is so much to do at FW.... horseback riding, renting canoes, bike riding, renting sea sprites, and just relaxing in the golf cart....:)

Ok that's great! Good to know a car isn't a mist and that there's lots to do!

Are there cabins near the restaurant? I don't plan on cooking. Will just have snacks in the cabin.

Considering that FW has better transportation options than the Value and most Moderate resorts, I certainly don't think a rental car is a MUST.

Our past trips to WDW have had us going to at least one park every day...after talking to our boys about the next trip (May 2014) we found out that they would prefer not to see a park every single day. So we are planning to throw in the water parks, Disney Quest, and even a day trip to Cocoa Beach as alternative activities.

I still couldn't see camping at FW with NO days at a park, but that's probably because we live so far away that the idea of driving to FW without at least going to MK seems crazy!

We went in June and did not visit any of the WDW parks. We did have our Tahoe , but we pulled our camper :)
That being said our plan to be at FW was because DD wanted to go see Harry Potter world. To do that we of course used our vehicle, but the days we did not do universal the Tahoe stayed parked and we used Disney transportation or the golf cart. To me a golf cart is more of a must than a car. If you use an outside rental for the golf cart, it doesn't have to be a budget buster:)

Thanks for that tip!

We park our truck (it pulls our camper there) and only drive it if we are leaving property (Universal, Sea World, etc.). We use Disney Transportation for all other travels, and we have found it to be no better or worse than other resorts.

We have a 12 night stay planned in Jan/Feb 2014 and are planning at least 3 non-park days.

There are no cabin loops near the Settlement (which is where both the restaurant and marina are...). You'll either have to hop an internal bus or rent a golf cart. We never rent a golf cart and rely on the internal busses to navigate the resort, but a lot of folks opt for the golf carts.(We have walked the full length of the resort, but it is BIG!!!)

If you have any interest in other resorts you can take to boat to MK and then a bus to a resort of your choice. Some have great CS for lunch or even dinner. Plus the WL is a nice walk and they have a good CS. Also check out their shops.

No, a vehicle is not a must, but many people do go offsite during their stays at FW. We never use any transportation except Disney. We love the freedom of 'not' driving, also we usually have AP's so go in the parks every day.

There are two cabins in loop 100 but I don't know how easy it is to request them - have heard of some being able to rent those. They are 'very' close to the settlement area.

I've gone to FW several times before I became an AP holder just to stay at the Fort with our RV. The place is amazing and there are A LOT of things to do. (One of my favs is just riding the boats over to CR or WL) FW does have internal shuttle that stops at all the loops, outpost, settlement post and meadows post. My suggestion - call ahead and rent an electrical golf cart. I love driving around the loops checking out everyone's rig especially during a holiday.

Some people will take bikes and use that as transport. You really don't need your own car.

We use car to go to the grocery store. So I guess it may depend on if you plan to cook or eat out too. Other then that you do not need the car to move around at the campground or WDW. We sometime do it for convenience just so we do not need to wait for bus. My family love camping at the Ford my kids enjoy it we always take scooters and bikes for them and during our trips we almost never go to parks. We spend the day at the pool, visit down town, boardwalk, watch fireworks, rent a golf cart for few days, eat out couple times, participate in some of the activities which are planned by fort and stuff like that...
