They Are New Yorkers, Fear's Their Life! An Eye-Opening Jaunt in Modern Day New York City 2012

DAY 1 PART II

So, we were on our way to the Carnegie Deli. It wasn't very far from our hotel, but it did include a lot of walking. We had to walk through Times Square so I got my first taste of the NYC lifestyle with people everywhere and an endless amount of crosswalks. It was a bit overwhelming, but I sorta started embracing it later. Here are some pics from the walk:

024.jpg

025.jpg

We did get to the Carnegie Deli and it was PACKED to say the least. As we walked in the door, a bunch of the waiters or attendees or whatever they called asked if we had two, we answered yes and were ushered right into the back room. I had a huge bag and I was holding a camera in one hand then the case in another, but my dad had to take the one chair where we could just sit down at. I, of course, got the seat across from him where I was squeezing amongst a bunch of people, not fun. Then, we sit down, look at the menu, which really turns off my dad since it had some interesting ingredients (traditional Jewish deli) so he asked if I wanted to go some place. I agreed because my experience there wasn't a stellar one so far. The funny thing was when we left, two new people were brought in to where we sat.

We then walked around looking for our back-up plan, The Famous Oyster Bar, a restaurant my dad found online when we were planning this trip. It was luckily right around the corner from Carnegie so we didn't have to walk for long. There was basically nobody in the restaurant, like there were only four other people there besides us. It was nice. We also heard an interesting conversation from the people behind myself and my dad about planning for a same-sex marriage, something you don't hear everyday. It was funny though how this happened though...

My dad texted me since my back was facing the table and the window while my dad was in perfect people watching position while I wasn't. He then texted me and neglected to put a word in and I just whispered to him, "Same WHAT?!" Things got really awkward then, but then I found out and listened to the conversation while I enjoyed my meal. I also took some pictures while there:

026.jpg

You can see the JOP the man was with to the left of me
027.jpg

For an appetizer, I had classic ole' New England Clam Chowder, which was delicious as always; creamy, warm and tasty!
028.jpg

Also, some bread and butter!
029.jpg

My main course, Fish & Chips! Very good and I absolutely love the fries at this place. My dad had the same thing as me for the most part and we both really liked everything we had. If we ever came back to NYC, we would definitely stop by here again.
030.jpg

After our early dinner, we noticed we still had a lot of time before our room would be ready and before we needed to leave for the 9/11 memorial, so we walked around Times Square a little bit since it was so close by. I, of course, took a lot of pictures!

039.jpg

We then made our way back to the hotel after this, nothing bought yet and went to check-in again. First, we checked out the hotel souvenir shop. We didn't find anything here, but an endless supply of Yankee memorabilia and such, ECK! I'm sure anyone from New England would understand the long time rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees, so it was definitely a huge culture shift to see this. I had to take a picture!

040.jpg

After being appalled by endless Yankees souvenirs, we waited in line at the front desk and checked in again. Our room was ready! We got the key cards, grabbed our bags from the luggage check and wheeled them over the elevator to get to our room. Then, after wheeling our bags down the endless hallway, we finally got to our room. It was a bit small, but we really were only going to be there for resting and that was only over night so it would have to do.

041.jpg

042.jpg

043.jpg

After relaxing for a bit, we noticed it was almost time to go to the 9/11 memorial. I grabbed the passes I printed off only a few hours before along with my trusty travel bag, but what happened next is a story for next time.

TO BE CONTINUED

Italy Isola??? Say whaaaa?

You know how at the Italy pavilion there is a bridge that goes out towards the lagoon. Well, there are two little islands and at night, they sometimes have tables and a buffet usually for special occasions. When I went with my school's chorus and band, we were able to go to that buffet and it was awesome! There were no Italian male waiters, not to disappoint you or anything. (; You should read my TR about it, it's the light blue colored in my signature (:

So before I begin this update, I thought I would put in another little update on something else. Something more relevant to what's going on around here.

I MAY be going back to a Disney park sooner than expected!

I know, I know, the last time I said this I spoke too soon, but I'm not making a PTR or anything like that just trying to plant the seeds if you get my drift. Here's the story though:

First up, for those of you not following me on Twitter, this past week I've been sick like really sick. My nose was running like crazy, I had a very dry throat, tiredness, the whole shebang! We went to the doctor and discovered I have a Sinus Infection and right before the State Meet for swimming, GREAT! Well, he gave me antibiotics for five days and said I should be better by then and I'm already feeling good, so YAY I can go to states! But besides that, I've had lots of time on my hands even if my eyes were watering like CRAZY everytime I breathed and staring at a laptop didn't help, but I spent a lot of it on the DIS.

Fast forward to yesterday, after reading TRs, I was feeling a bit of Disney depression and thinking about the now defunct Disneyland trip I had planning for my 16th birthday, I decided to price out a 4 day trip being a bit too hopeful. If you haven't noticed or not but we didn't have a huge full-blown family vacation besides the norm since our Disney trip in 2010 and my mom is eager to go on another big trip since we had so much fun then and on other big trips (DC, New York (non-NYC), etc.). She mentioned going to California for two weeks to see the sites and visit her cousins whom we haven't seen for years and through Facebook (gotta love FB) I saw her cousins had been taking trips there so I thought, "Oh they're close. Maybe we could go?" We have been having some financial trouble this year, but my mom is looking for a better paying job and I'm looking for my first so hopefully we will be able to get everything back in order on this trip.

This brings me back to last night. I priced out a trip in four different variations with resort hotels and Good Neighbor hotels since I've heard they are in some ways better than staying at a DLR hotel. I then went up to my mom and showed them and guess what? ... She actually thought the prices were go and even said she wanted to stay for FIVE days! Wow! Then mentioned to me about the two weeks idea of spending one half at DLR and the other checking out SoCal and visiting her cousin. We also checked out the prices for flights and they seemed okay, a bit high, but okay and I wasn't even looking at actual dates (we are thinking next summer). So I had a major breakthrough and hopefully everything goes as planned so we can starting setting aside money for this trip.

I'll keep you updated on this seeing how it all turns out and hopefully once I'm done with these mini-TRs and maybe I'll have a new PTR, but for now I'm not so sure and it may turn out to be just as defunct as the last DLR trip I had in mind. I need all the luck I can get right now, not for only this trip but for my job search along with my moms. I'm crossing my fingers tightly now and hope that I can get one soon.

For now, enjoy this update!

Chapter 5: Following The Luge Part I

So I left off just as we were entering the City. I went a bit photo happy, okay maybe REALLY photo happy so there are a lot of photos here, probably a double update. I will try to add in where we were, but I'm not sure if my notes were the best so bare with me. For now, sit back, relax and enjoy the Old City of Quebec...

Chapter 5: Following The Luge Part II With Sprinkles of Pixie Dust

We were still following the luge course at this point. I apologize for the quality of the photos. My camera does NOT like night photos plus we were moving a lot, it was cold... a lot of factors contributed to the bad photography. But there were lots of interesting things to see so bare with me.

120.jpg

121.jpg

122.jpg

We came upon this cool wall as we came towards what would be sort of a dead end for the course since it goes into these really tight side-streets (the streets in this city were already VERY tiny). I took a lot of pictures and then we had a group picture which I do not own, but I'm sure you'll get the gist of this beautiful wall though it is much more stunning in person.

The tunnel got us back on track.

131.jpg

This Fudge Shop in the picture below was actually really cool. I wish it was open on this night because we never went back. They had some cool concoctions in there.

132.jpg

133.jpg

134.jpg

135.jpg

136.jpg

137.jpg

We had to go up these ridiculously steep and long stairway. It was awful, but totally worth it for the sprinkle of pixie dust we got at the end.

138.jpg

139.jpg

Don't see it? Well, below right in the center of the picture is one of the main centerpieces at the Canada pavilion World Showcase. It is called the Chateau Frontenac and is the most photographed hotel in the World! It is actually very pretty. I got to see it again when I went on a tour of the Old City two days later. The pictures are a lot more clearer then, but it is lovely.

140.jpg

This was the last picture of the night because my camera had enough and died. We didn't walk too long after this because it was getting very cold and late, so we headed back and stopped at a McDonald's. I didn't order anything, but we had a nice time just sitting down and relaxing for a bit.

After, we went back to the hotel and ran into the crazy college kids who were out and about at all the clubs right across the street from our hotel. They were also complaining non-stop about being cold though about half of them (mostly the girls) were wearing really flimsy and short summer clothes. It was pretty funny, but we got away from them VERY QUICKLY!

We got back to our rooms very late, but still had time to wind down so I updated my trip journal and watched more on the presidential race (they had American channels in Quebec, very cool!). I wanted to take a shower in the morning, so I set my phone alarm for 5:30am (since my roomies weren't okay with being up so early) and I went to bed 11:20pm. I had a great first day in Quebec, lots of fun and I couldn't wait for the next so the early alarm was worth it.

TO BE CONTINUED...

So happy you at least got to go to NYC and Quebec! Also enjoyed seeing the missing photos.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you to go to DLR and getting a job.
It's quite difficult out in the job market now. Just be confident in yourself and you'll charm your prospective employer.:cool2:

TINK! Where have you been? It's been awhile, hasn't it? Or am I over-exaggerating lol

Thanks! They were both fun trips and I'm so glad in place of Disney I got to still go to many great places. Glad you enjoyed the lost photos too, they really brought back some good memories I didn't have any pictures of :)

Thank you! I need all the luck I can get. Hopefully I can get beyond my idiosyncrasies and get that job. If not, then maybe I'll have one over the next summer and I'll be on the right track.

Yes sadly it's been quite a while. I do check in with some of my favorites every once in a while, but just don't have much time. I was given additional responsibilities through my job and a very nice raise but have also been caring for a relative who is quite ill.
I'm hoping to go to WDW or DLR soon, I had tentatively planned a trip this fall but just can't get away. Maybe next year.

I have faith in you. Anyone who can write as well as you do at your age just needs some confidence.

Awww, I'm glad you stopped by since there is a lot more that needs your attention. It's always nice to see you! (:

You definitely need to go, based on what I'm hearing you need a break. Pour on the pixie dust now!

Thank you! I guess everything happens for a reason. Maybe those jobs were never for me. Maybe my real job is right around the corner... *crosses fingers again*

They Are New Yorkers, Fear's Their Life! An Eye-Opening Jaunt in Modern Day New York City 2012

Day 1 Part III

On our way out of the hotel, we had trouble figuring out how in the world we were supposed to get to the 9/11 memorial. It was such a last minute thing (I printed the tickets a few hours before) and now we were faced with the issues of being last minute. To resolve this, we walked up to the Concierge desk.

We first grabbed a map and looked at it trying to figure how we would walk. My dad didn't think it would be too far so I thought that would be fine, but we just couldn't figure it out. We talked to a lady from the Concierge and she told us that taking the Subway would be much better. My dad was trying to spend as little money as possible after the Wicked and whatever-show-we-would-be-seeing-during-a-matinee, but he obliged. She gave us directions as well as what line to take and we were on our way.

The sky outside was not looking very nice at this point, but we were pushing our luck and walked around a bit trying to find the entrance to the Subway. It took awhile and some walking back and forth, but we found it right across the street. Can you tell we are those small town kiddos in the big city?

Now, I've been to many underground trains or subway-like style. The T in Boston, the Metro in DC and from what I've heard about them I've been okay, but then I came face-to-face with the Subway. I'm not going to sugar coat it and be very blunt, but it is disgusting and really lies deep underground. Like if the Journey to the Center of the Earth could happen in real life, this would be it, it's that grungy. Good thing this was the only time we used it.

Anyways, everything went fairly smoothly down there. We went to go get our tickets. My dad got his first and the guy told him to give him five seconds. My dad yelled out, "Time!" before the guy was done and the guy in reply squeaked out, "No, it's not." It was really funny, but keep this in mind for later.

With the money left over from my dad's ticket, I then got my ticket with no problems or antics. And we were on our way. Here's a picture of the ticket I took later:

048.jpg

Our train was probably the deepest underground and we got right when the train was arriving. I wasn't sure about it being our train at the time so we waited for the next one which came in no time.

The ride was exactly like I've rode before, but I was more nervous than I thought I would be. It was weird, maybe I've found my one fear of transportation: Trains. I'm fine on planes, cars, but trains I'm leery. I guess I've just heard too many stories.

When we got to our stop, which was the last stop, we discovered that it did end up raining. People were running around the station with umbrellas, soaked coats and water was all over the floor (more than usual). We still braved it and after passing through rain-centric crowds, we got outside where it still was drizzling a little, but not too bad. After a few minutes, it had stopped which was good since we had a little trouble getting around.

We saw a sign and followed it thinking it would be a clear route, but the gap between the signs were ridiculous. I started pointing ways we should've gone since there was a huge scrim around the whole thing. We even crossed the street to walk along the scrim, which turned out to be a bad idea in the end because a bunch of street crews were out and we didn't want to walk in the middle of the road. Then, I decided to make a turn while we were keeping a straight run, which ended up being the wrong way. Basically, we were all over the place, but we finally found our way and arrived!

Be noted, we had a little bit of a line to wait in when we entered, but it was only meant to regulate crowd flow. Then, after that we went through what may be the longest queue ever and being the DisNerd I am, I've been through some long queues, but this was ridiculous. Most of the time was walking and the only time we had to really do anything was for airport security, which my dad had a little trouble with, but I went right on through. I felt so pro after that.

We did some more walking and finally we were there. The 9/11 memorial is basically right where the twin towers once stood. In their place they have two pools which have names engraved in the side surrounding the outer rim of the pool. Then there are trees and landscapes around it. You can also see the new World Trade Center from inside, which was pretty cool. They are also making a museum there, which was nowhere near finished while we were there, but I'm sure it will be done soon and absolutely beautiful.

Here are some pictures:

044.jpg

045.jpg

046.jpg

I'm enjoying myself.

047.jpg

We were trying so hard to figure out how deep this was, but we couldn't get close enough, but the size of this really shows how truly big the Twin Towers were and it's amazing. I was stunned.

The tree, pictured above, is actually a very special tree. It was called the Survivor Tree. This tree stood a bit of a distant away from where it was now. During the 9/11 memorial, many trees were destroyed from the debris, radiation and such. This one didn't exactly make it out, but there was enough left they were able to replant it here. It is still very fragile and sacred so you really can't touch it (emphasized by the carousel-style fence around it). I got a few pictures and my dad took one with me in it below.

068.jpg

069.jpg

070.jpg

Overall, I thought this was the most beautiful memorial I've seen yet. As you can tell, it was pretty rainy and dreary, but everything was so clean, well kempt and a simple but elegant memorial. Also, the fact you get to see the new World Trade Center next to where the old one once stood. They definitely did a nice job making a memorial to what may be the greatest American tragedy. If you ever plan a trip to New York City, don't pass this up, it is so touching and awe-inspiring to see it in person.

Hope your trip works out! Ugh 9/11 stuff makes me so sad. :( Must be cool to see though!

Hope your trip works out! Ugh 9/11 stuff makes me so sad. :( Must be cool to see though!

Thanks Marissa! How was your trip?

Yeah, it is very sad. I wish we could've stayed for this little documentary they had playing in the gift shop... but I'll get to that later. It was really cool to see, I would love to go back to see it in its entirety.

Chapter 6: A Snowboarder Can Ski, Alright!

Now, we're onto the next day. My phone alarm went off at 5:30am and I was up. I took a quick shower, got changed and was about ready to go at 6, about an hour and a half until I had to leave. I decided to look for LGA and I found him by the window. I guess he was a bit excited.

141.jpg

30 minutes went by and our wake-up call went off. I was about to begin to pack when I noticed my roommates weren't moving. If I didn't know better I would've thought them dead. They just weren't moving. I knew that our chaperone would be over so I tried my best, but they just weren't having it. So I gave up on them, thinking they would get up soon enough. After I got my travel bag together and started putting on my jacket, I noticed they were still asleep and the time we were supposed to leave was only minutes away. Once I was ready to go, they were not getting up and we only had a few minutes. I walked out just as the chaperone stopped by. Luckily, one of them got up when I opened the door and I didn't have to cause a problem for the chaperones. The annoying one that inspired the TR title was still sleeping though. Go figure!

I was out the door after that, met up with Jocelyn, Carolyn and Angela then we were on our way soon enough, both my roomies running out trying to stay with the group. This morning we were visiting the breakfast place reserved for us called the Spaghetti House. At 7:30am we were on our way and out the door, nothing out of the ordinary except it was very cold again and we had to wait awhile outside the door until we were finally let in for our breakfast.

The restaurant was fairly nice, it felt very old-fashioned and reminded me of the videos about Club 33 of Disneyland, very similar styling except with not much space. I ended up being situated in a corner, the only person with an extra bag. We had to wait awhile for people to be seated so I took some pictures:

Our Drinks

142.jpg

The Room

143.jpg

LGA wanted my orange juice

144.jpg

But I drank it instead, well tried to. I'm not a big orange juice fan. The doctors all hate me for it. Well, sorry, but there are things people don't like and it's hard to change a person's taste buds so stop killing me for it. I try my best with my affliction to the apparently most important things in life: Orange Juice and Milk. DEAL!

Moving on!

We also had water, the substitute for everything.

145.jpg

Then, they opened up the buffet. Of course, they had to send us in groups and guess who were in the last group? If you said the-annoying-roommate-that-believes-he-has-friends-but-doesn't, you would be sorely disappointed right now. Nope, it was us. The waiters do refill the buffet a lot, but you're better off going first not having to worry about that fact. Especially since when I got there, the pancakes had run out and I settled with a French Toast instead.

Here is my first plate (yes, I went up more than once. I'm a growing boy, what do you expect?):

146.jpg

I thought it was all very good. I have a very distinguished taste for bacon, I really like it fatter than crispy so these ones were okay. I'm not a French Toast fan as you can tell, but usually it's due to how soggy it is, but this was nice and dry, which I liked. The potatoes were good, really crispy with good flavorig, a little on the bland side, but I enjoyed them. Overall, this was the crowd-pleaser at my table so if you ever end up in Quebec City at this place, you'll probably be all over it.

Not long after I was done with this plate (or partially done depending), I rushed up for seconds. Now, I did get a food picture, but as you can guess I was enjoying this plate a bit too much.

147.jpg

For this one, I just filled my plate with the potatoes again and some pancakes. I began by eating the potatoes not too sure of the pancakes since I've been leery ever since my mom scarred me for life by giving me pancakes one morning that had these weird crystals, but I delved in and... DELICIOUSNESS! The best pancake I've ever had! It didn't have any chunks or any other gross additions. It was awesome, the highlight of the meal, especially with the awesome Maple Syrup (Canadians make the best syrup!).

Overall, I give this meal an 8/10.

After, everyone was done we headed out. The chaperones gave everyone a choice whether or not to go back to the hotel room, a little coffee shop or stop at Starbucks. I don't drink coffee or need any real pick-me-ups in the morning so I went back to the hotel to get ready for the endless activities we had for the day.

Before I was gone away from the Spaghetti House completely, I took a picture of the sign out front:

148.jpg

It's in FRENCH!

I got ready fairly quickly, not really needing to put on certain clothing yet, maybe hung out in the hallway or with Jocelyn in her room (as my notes and my memory leave a gap here) then we left no sooner had I walked down the hallway once. This trip was definitely bearing down the hatchet if you know what I mean. The bus ride was uneventful since we didn't have too far to go and were there in no time, a rare occasion on this trip.

Then, we got to the place. I went downstairs to put on my snow pants as soon as we got inside then went upstairs for some snacks that the place offered us. LGA was awaiting a treat for himself.

153.jpg

This is what I got for MYSELF!

154.jpg

LGA thought the muffin was his. I had a little trouble getting him off *wink, wink*

155.jpg

We had a little bit of waiting around especially since some kids had a lot more to get dressed in than most. I took some picture of my group and the place.

149.jpg

Jocelyn's ready!

150.jpg

I'm ready!

151.jpg

Carolyn's ready!

152.jpg

... Oh yeah, Angela's ready too. I think.

Then, two people, a guy and a girl came up in matching snow suits who were going to be our instructors or counselors or whatever. They split us up into groups by chaperone, which made it even. Luckily, Jocelyn, Carolyn and Angela were in the same group as me. We had the girl and she took us out for... CROSS COUNTRY SKIING! This was another point in the trip I was really excited about since I skipped out on it when my sisters, my mom and dad went while I was being mopey on our annual skiing/snowboarding trip in February.

She brought us downstairs to get in our gear. I had a little trouble with the boots we had to get since my size changes so much nowadays, but it was all fixed up and I was not the last person outside. Once everyone was outside we were ready to go.

I got very focused at this point in the trip and couldn't really take out the camera while skiing so you'll have to deal with writing and lots of it. This is also where the title for this chapter comes from. See I'm a snowboarder and haven't skiied since I was a toddler. I had a little trouble getting my foot into the cross country skis since they move around a lot and I'm used to fairly stationary bindings. Of course, this led to me being last out on the trail. The girl did give us good instruction on how to cross country skiing so I was pretty good at though it was a bit tiring, but I got stuck behind a group of slowpokes, one of which kept on falling down.

Then, we got to the hill. I had to wait because of the klutz I was behind, but because of my inability to stop, I started going down behind her and had to fall. On a snowboard, you only have to lean back to stop but on skis, more specifically cross country skis you really have to make a good pie to stop, which apparently wouldn't work at all. I did get through and out back onto the trail, but it took awhile. After that, we were shown the trail and off I went, this time for a fairly good time.

I found the whole thing very fun. Who knew? A snowboarder could ski like I could. I ended up going around twice, which was a lot compared to those behind me who only made one loop. I did fall when I got back to the beginning before going around for a second time since there was a hill and I couldn't stop, again, but that didn't stop me. The woods were what also made the whole venture fun since they were so picturesque and beautiful. I got pictures on our second endeavor, but that'll have to wait. I highly recommend you try cross country skiing once in your life it's a lot of fun.

When I got back, which didn't take too long since I talked with the girl chaperone leader, Lisa. I wasn't the only one who had tried this for the first time so it was nice being able to relay to them how it went and share our experience. The only downside to this was Andrew (my annoying roommate) was there. But what was interesting, my chaperone, Bob, was fairly good at the whole thing (shocking because he's so short and it requires a lot of leg leverage), he went around more times than I did!

When I got back, I took some pictures since I didn't want to leave this experience un-documented completely.

I gave all my equipment back when I went inside, changed into my boots and went back upstairs for down time. There I saw Jocelyn, Carolyn and Angela were already back. They told me they only went around once because they were all taking pictures the whole time. They didn't think it was as fun as expected, but they had a lot more trouble than myself.

We had to wait around for everyone to get back. I had some of the snacks I grabbed earlier along with some more left out while talking with my friends. The stragglers finally got back along with the other group and we were off to our next adventure.

I always see you on MeMom and Jill's reports so I am joining in!

I love your NYC and Quebec pictures! I've never been to Quebec and only ever been to NYC twice, once for a daytrip and once for the sole purpose of seeing Wicked. There and back from Boston in one day.

Can't wait to read more!

They are both wonderful places equally, I can tell you that much. You should definitely visit Quebec City one day. And that's awesome you went to NYC just for Wicked! I almost thought that was the trip's main purpose, but my dad sorta surprised me in the final month prior.

Wait, Boston? Do you live in/near Boston?

I'll update ASAP!

My best friend mentioned wanting to go to Quebec for Winter Carnival right after I was reading your updates, so now I want to go even more! It's a pretty good excuse to get a passport. ;)

I do live near Boston! Like seven or so miles north. I don't ever drive in because I loathe the driving and the parking, but I'm a pretty short train ride away. :) Are you in the Boston/MA/New England area too?

Oh I heard all about that. We walked by the place where it happens while we were there. Quebec is where Cirque du Soleil originated so I'm sure their Winter Carnival is a must-see. Definitely a good excuse to get a passport.

Haha, yeah we were lucky with the parking (YAY FOR SWEET SIXTEENS!). I didn't think the driving was bad, but it is annoying. And yes, yes I am. I live in New Hampshire, the southern portion so very close to MA (like I can drive 20 minutes to get to the closest MA town). I was born in MA too and lived there during my early years. Most of my family lives down there so I know it's layout well especially places like Boston.
