I haven't purchased anything from eBay for quite some time. My niece is an artist. She was talking about saving up to get an overhead projector to help with some of her work.

So I thought that would be a good "surprise" Christmas gift. She wouldn't be using it all the time, but just for special projects. I looked on ebay and found several used overheads (buying new is way out of my price range).

I've read several descriptions and many say unit works, is in good condition, with minor wear & tear on the casing. Sold as is. I don't mind the minor scratches or wear & tear. I know what "sold as is" normally means. But in this case, what happens if I get it and it doesn't work (even if it says in the description that it does work)? Am I out the cost or can I return it even if the ad states "as is"?

I've looked at used units from $20-100. I could take a chance on the $20-40 unit, but really don't want to be out money if I can avoid it.

Thanks!

I think if you get it and it doesn't work, you can fight to get your money back. In my experience, sold as is means more that you can't just say you want to return it as it has a scratch or a stain or something. I would ask for more pictures of it. Most ebayers will then email you pics of all sides, any defects, ect......

Although you may be buying something as-is, the item has to be as described, which includes working if that is stated. (If you ask me, it ought to be working unless described as nonworking!)

You do have to make the effort to return something in order to get a refund, even if the item is not as described.

For important purchases, it is better not to buy sight unseen, which rules out eBay.
