We just came home a little over a week ago and I'm going through withdraw. Want to start planning for the fall of 2012 and I was thinking I was crazy!! Trying to decide whether to go the end of September and do the whole Halloween thing which we have done before, or to go early November or early December and experience Christmas which we have never done before. Any suggestions?
I can't speak for others, but I just went last Dec 9-15, and I had an incredible time. Taking in all the decorations, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, the Candlelight Processional and I DARE anyone to watch the Osbourne Lights in the middle of the street and not catch yourself that your jaw is wide open. The same can be said for the lighting of the castle ceremony.
We also took a morning to have breakfast at the Polynesian just so we could ride the monorail to the other resorts and see how each of them were decorated. By the way, the life-sized gingerbread house and gingerbread Xmas tree are a must see. Also, I wanted to do this, but didn't have time, but walk through the campgrounds and see how everyone has decorated their own area. I heard people talking about it, and they raved.
The crowds aren't too bad and walking around the world in Epcot and seeing all the winter holidays and how they are celebrated was really cool. And if you have children, the performers interact with them.
There are 2 caveats though:
1) When we were down there it was the coldest and windiest it had been in many years. The avg temp is usually mid40's to 50's. So it's the roll of the dice. The same way it would be if it were to rain all week in the spring and summer.
2) Find out when the Pop Warner championship week is and go the week before or after. I checked in the day that the tourney was over. When I was checking in, the people who were checking out would tell stories about cheerleaders practicing in the open areas at 5am and non-stop yelling at each other... on the bus, at meals, at the pool, etc... I'd also hear that the parents would get a little (ahem) boisterous, at the lounges. Didn't hear any complaints about the footballers themselves.
I hope I didn't scare you away from Disney in Dec. If you have any doubts, just wait til the end of this year when the Home and Garden Network airs their behind the scenes special. That's what inspired me.
