When we retire we are going to spend a month or two at some DVC location during the winter. It would be so nice to be able to plan things with other DVC members for a little social interaction. Just simple things like playing a game of Scrabble or eating out would be nice. My wife and I love being together but it is always fun to socialize.

I agree. Last Christmas we went to the merry mixer thinking it was going to be a great opportunity to meat fellow DVCers. But it seemed everybody just stuck with themselves. Having said this I have never tried a meet up at the rose and crown I see posted from time to time. ?

We plan on doing this too. Our plan is 3 weeks during Wind and Food Fest, then the month of January (avoiding our coldest season). As others mentioned the Dis is the best place to try and get 'get togethers' arranged.

I met my best friend and her husband, here on the DIS eleven years ago. She saw that I was from Orland Park IL and at the time they lived in Richton Park. We were also both pin traders and DVC members. We met for lunch and the rest is history. We travel together a lot! And speaking of pin trading, most of my trader friends are DVC members. When pin trading started in 1999, traders got to know one another. i keep in contact with a lot of trader friends and there is a group of us that get together every October in WDW.

Some friends I met through a local Disney club. And although the club is no longer, we have a get together in WDW every two years in October.

Look for other DVC members from your area and arrange a meet. We have done a few here in the Chicago area and they have been a lot of fun. So if you will be in WDW in Oct, start a post asking "Who's going to be in WDW in Oct & who would like to meet!"

Go on Disney tours. We have always met up with other DVC members on tours. Heck, I've struck up conversations with people at the bus stops and next thing you know we're exchanging phone numbers!

A friend of mine who was a member before me met alot of people in an AOL chat room in 1998. They had a "ladies trip" in March 1999 and she invited me along and that's where I got the DVC bug! I am still friends with many of them. Also met others on the AOL DVC board (which is now a yahoo group).

Funny you should bring this up. It's a discussion my DH & I have frequently. It usually starts with something like "The only disadvantages to a Disney World 'retirement' are....."

It would be nice to meet up with some DIS friends at DW some day for a game of scrabble or dominos.

Seems like the Community Room may be a good place to strike up a conversation, or Welcome Home Wednesdays or even here on the "Who's going in..." thread.

We go and dedicate the time to our family right now, but as we get older could see that shifting.

We'll be there 10/15-10/25. 8 days at BWV and 2 at BLT. We'll be out and about if you see me say hi ;)

I am nowhere near retirement age, but Id love to make some Disney/DVC friends so my other friends can stop pretending to be interested in my Ramblings.
Someone recently compared me to a bride who obsessively discusses their wedding when no one around them cares, but no one wants to hurt her feelings or face her wrath lol:laughing:

I'm on long island and I love pin trading!

One of the reasons I started having DIS/DVC meets years ago was so I could meet folks I "talk" to here on the DIS/DVC boards. There have been some folks who have almost become regulars at my meets. It's always nice to recognize a familiar face when I run into them in later years in the parks or at the resorts.

I'll be arranging another one come early December! This time at AKV/Kidani.

My son met his best friend years ago at the DVC, they were 8, ended up being college room mates. Still best friends and we see this parents often!

Perhaps the community rooms can have sign up sheets for board or card games. i've been in the one at Boardwalk when Scrabble games have been going on.

I've used the Disboard to meet people and using it has been a resounding success. When we were coming with a preteen cousin, we met with a Disboarder who was coming with a granddaughter the same age. We've enjoyed many meals with Disboard friends and as the friendship grows, there's contact outside these boards.

I'm spending my first January in Florida, and it's true that I've invited friends to join me, but we'll be connecting with friends from here. I'm thrilled with the opportunities for meeting people that I've found here!

We'll both be in Disney during future Januarys and getting together with others would be on our wish list!

Bobbi:goodvibes,
Bobbi, we really enjoyed our meal with you at Artist Point a couple years ago too! There are just some folks here who feel so comfortable, and you are one of them!

Diane, we did too, and have regretted that we just miss your Disboard get togethers! I always read your report and enjoy seeing the group pictures. We hope to get to one in the future!

I wanted to do a fireworks cruise a couple of years ago, but I didn't want to pay for the full boat. I found another family on disboards, and they turned out to be very, very nice. We had a great time.

We met a family on the Disney Cruise Board. We met them on the cruise. This year we toured Hollywood Studios with them. It was a great day meeting up with friends.

We've done this 3 times. Twice for Wishes, once with Pirates when it was a GG event, and once for Illuminations! However we've not connected with anyone for the last 2 tries.

I will soon be announcing an early December DIS/DVC meet. I usually like to do that about 3 months out so people can plan ahead. We are going to be at AKV/Kidani from Dec. 6-14, so I'll be announcing the meet soon.

Nickspace gave me a great idea! I think a DIS/DVC Scrabble match would be a lot of fun!
