DVC eliminates perks for resale

We did a last minute points rental earlier this year. Worked stellar.

I'll be interested to see if Disney does anything regarding the rental market in the next few years.

I have not rented points yet, however we're probably doing it on our next trip.

I was thinking the same thing...

Though renting DVC would completely defeat the purpose of DVC - as the thing they never wanted was to "take it or leave it"

Plus...they'd want some ridiculous fee per point.

Kinda like what they want to sell it now

Sadly IMO that is the way it is going. Before long we may only be able to be DVC direct.

If that is our destiny - so be it.

But here's the problem: we consumers need to grow a spine. The only people that can control DVC as a viable longterm product are the members - because Disney will "probe it" relentlessly until it's an afterthought as a consumer product. That's what's coming.

I understand what non DVC members can do to show disney they aren't happy with the things they are doing, we can just stop going, but what can DVC members do? Disney already had a ton of their money.

They could shut down rental completely though couldn't they?

Just make it so only the people on the contract can use the rooms.

Well for a start... not buy more points?

Selling is an option too, if you're not using it, but that depends on whether you are still getting your money's worth or not.

Wouldn't that be a change of the contract terms? They might be able to do it for new contracts at new resorts - but I don't think they can change it on the resorts/contracts already signed? (I'm not a lawyer though!)

Yeah, I mean I guess my thoughts are if you sell your points, does Disney really care? Because they still have their money and now they have a new "member".

We've considered buying into DVC in the past.

I'd need to read the whole contract to know, but if it contains the language "Do not purchase your Ownership Interest in reliance on your ability to transfer these products, services and Incidental Benefits" then arguably no.

Does it state anywhere that renting is allowed? Because renting is a type of transfer of services.

Exaclty...

Exchange it out...not buy annual passes...reject the dining plan...increase rental car usage (That will freak them out)...start telling your "guide" that you will NEVER purchase additional points or recommend them - and hold the line.

DVC is pointless if they don't get the ancillary spending. It's 100% myth that they are "scoring" off the development end.

If you specifically do it? No Disney doesn't care at all. Just like when individuals announce they're not going to Disney because of price increases.

They don't care until a substantial number of people start doing it. If more people sold than were buying, Disney would care because the price goes down. But let's face it that isn't going to happen.

Which is why I don't understand why you would tick off the resale market (and some current owners). You can't buy that kind of advertising and some level of guaranteed spend.

I'd be curious to know how many people who have bought resale would have bought direct. I have to imagine it would be a low percentage.

Maybe they are also trying to limit the amount of turnover?

This isn't the first time DVC have made moves like this, they removed the ability to use resale points for cruises a few years ago. The resale market may be perceived as devaluing the product. While it makes sense that a lot of the profit comes from the ancillaries, DVC itself will want to maximize its own profits.

Yes, but the cruises were not a great value to begin with, right? This has significant value, most importantly discounted tickets.

Yes this is a much bigger step. But the pattern was already in place. They value direct sales of DVC over resales.

We need to keep in mind that individual parts of Disney have to hit sales, revenue and profit targets. While the ancillary benefits are good for Disney's bottom line they don't help DVC specifically.

Nothing in my contract that states renting not allowed. I'll take a look at it again.

But is there anything that specifically states it is allowed. If not then we're in a gray area and it comes down to intent.

And with language in there indicating that ability to transfer products and services is not guaranteed, they might not have to re-write the contract.

The only valuable "perk" is the Annual Pass "discount". What a person saves on DVC RESALE far surpasses the little 10% off purchases that you can still get with your Visa card (until they do away with that, too) and Annual Pass. If you go to certain eateries most days throughout the year you can get a 20% off voucher and buy all of your souvenirs in a bigger store at one time and get more off your total. With the measly 10% discount, you save $40 on $400 in souvenirs vs saving more than that per EACH point.

That is not in the contract. ;) The Member Services rep repeat that so much that it has become a trend, but that is not anywhere in the contract. In short, what the contract does say is you cannot purchase DVC for the sake of making it a business.
