In my defense, none of my family members that I cook for like mushrooms.. So when I want something with mushrooms in it, I'll buy a small can of the sliced ones..

However, I was just copying over a recipe that calls for fresh mushrooms - and I have no idea how to choose "good" ones in the supermarket.. :guilty:

Any tips you could pass along?

Thanks.. :)

As long as you're not talking the 'fancy' mushrooms:

My mom always told me the freshest ones were the whitest ones (they go brown as they age) that are not opened (the cap hasn't yet begun to separate from the stem.) :)

As for the more exotic mushrooms, I don't have a clue how to pick them. :confused3

Smell can also help. They smell stronger and not so good as they get old. Also as they age they may get slimy. Avoid them.

Most packaged mushrooms are dated when they were packaged. I always try to grab the package that was packed most recently.

You might try googling this question to. I'm sure there are answers out there.
