Well, we saw the urologist today and they are going to the ESWL (Electronic Shock Wave Lith......) on Thursday to hopefully break it up. Thank HEAVENS that they do not think they will have to put a stint in!!!!! Everytime I have one, I have severe bladder spasms until they take it out.

I had it twice this past summer and it wasn't too bad. (Except they made me keep the stint for over 6 weeks until all the pieces were out)

the shock wave thingie and she said it was a piece of cake.....I am glad for your son......we will be anxiously waiting the news of a speedy recovery....hugs to him and you

Ohhh, I'm so glad that's the route they're going to go! I hope it's a piece of cake for him. Tell him that he get's to have extra ice cream. I don't know why, but extra ice cream always goes well with medical procedures. :p ;)

I don't know anything about it, but it sounds like a good thing. :)

I had one a couple of years ago and it was easier than the alternative but I still had a fair amount of pain for the rest of the day afterwards.

Hope it goes well for him!

I hope everything goes okay for your son. They won't do the shock treatment on me:(

Is your ds still excited because he got a stone?:)

Good luck to him.:) I've heard that procedure is gentle and very effective.:)

Hope all goes well, Carol, I am sure it will. The shock wave treatment is very good from what I have heard from several who have had it done. My best.

Hi Jamsmom,

I worked at a Lithtrypsy center for 8 years. Electro Shockwave Lithotrypsy to be exact. ;)

It is a piece of cake, usually. He really MUST drink a lot of water afterwards to pass the stone residue. It it does not pass it can gum up and cause a blockage. You must have had a stent because your stone was pretty big or in a place where it had a big chance of causing a blockage. Stents are very, very uncomfortable for most people. I noticed the tall people are okay but us short folks have more trouble with stents.

Best of luck to your son...and all of you with those stones!

Knowing the pain of a kidney stone attack, I can only guess your son feels some relief getting this procedure done.

Saying a prayer that it all goes well.

I have had lithotripsy twice. It is better than a full blown stone attack, but may involve considerable discomfort and recovery time. Keep an eye on him and watch the pain management carefully. I needed heavy duty painkillers, including morphine, when I had the procedure a month ago. I am not trying to scare you, but rather to just be up front that this beats a kidney stone (usually), but may mimic some of the same problems for 24 to 48 hours. A lot also depends on the anesthesia they use.

browneyes- yes he is still exceited that he has a kidney stone, but because it has not been moving, he hasn't had too much pain.

I am hopeful that the ESWL breaks it up in teeeenny tiny pieces so it won;t be too bad as he passes them. I don't know it it was the pieces or the stent that cause me to want to strangle anyone who ever mentioned a stent to me again.

He says he will drink 2 lakes and the Mississippi River so he doesn;t have to o to sleep. I think he is really concerned over that, but he just HATES sleep in general. I told him sleep is a gift from above :)

I'll be anxious to hear how it goes. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I like the sound of the shockwave treatment. Sounds like it is less difficult for the patient than the "natural" route. Good luck with everything.
