Drinking while pregnant

I would also make an assumption here and bet that the waitress was a young lady that has never been pregnant. Hmmm...

Everyone I know would think it was weird to not drink lightly while pregnant.

Would they think it is weird not to drink at all? I honestly don't like the taste of alcohol, and have never enjoyed the feeling of being intoxicated. So I don't drink, whether pregnant or not.

I honestly don't understand what is so appealing about drinking!

Me either, but I bet it's time for a certain group came in to hijack the thread and tell us all about how great it is.

What's appealing about drinking....well, after a long day, a nice glass of wine does the trick to relax me. I like my martini's on the weekend, they taste good and have other benefits. ;) (I'm assuming you are speaking about drinking in general, not while pregnant)

Need more reasons? :teeth:

I don't see what's so appealing about going to church, so to each her own! :rotfl:

Sometimes I get tired of people acting so perfect when no one on this planet is perfect. I am not perfect and sometimes I do get snarky (but I promise not as in #10). It's up to an individual to figure out what he or she is comfortable with.

What gets me are the judgmental tones:

So because others on this thread have had some alcohol while pregnant, they are WRONG, even when their doctors have said it is okay.

THe OP said "is it wrong to drink Moderately while pregnant". What is Moderately? Ok, lets say for example I have 2 or 3 drinks a week while pregnant. That's up to 120 cocktails during 40 weeks while i've got a developing fetus inside of me.

Perhaps I see this whole story differently because I tried for over 2 years to have a second child and had 3 miscarriages. If I had even one drink during any of those, i'd have for sure thought I caused the MC.

And just because I have an opinion does not mean i'm perfect. Please, that's just not being fair. It's my opinion and many people agree with me while many people disagree with me.

I was raised believing it is OK to moderately drink while pregnant. My mom drank wine while pregnant and had 7 healthy kids. My Dhs mom drank beer/wine while pregnant (She is British) and had 9 healthy kids. All 16 kids could be considered rather healthy. In much of Europe, drinking lightly while pregnant is not seen as wrong. It is normal behavior.
chi-girl - Do Europeans consider it OK to smoke and drink caffeine while pregnant? I'm honestly not giving you a hard time, I'm serious. I have heard about Europeans drinking while pregnant but I have never heard anything about smoking or caffeine so I'm curious. Thanks.

I never saw me as a group but ok if you insist! ;)

Only a few of "the certain group" has posted but I know where they all are and will send them here if you miss them.

Thought this was an open forum...get a life.

Wow....sounds like the snotty little kid who always got picked last for dodge ball.

I have no problem with you drinking while pregnant.

Hey, my kid has to be the boss of somebody, right?

I totally agree with your point of view!

It took us about a year and a half for our daughter, and I never even thought of drinking when we were trying OR when I was pregnant. To me, a healthy baby is far more important than a glass of wine. IMHO, if you can't go nine months without a drink, you might need to reevaluate your priorities.

I'm glad you posted this, because you said it in a much nicer way than I could have.

I did not have one drop of alcohol (wine included) during my pregnancy.

I wanted to have a glass of wine on a busy business trip, but declined. The next morning I awoke to a pool of blood and drove 120 miles in rush hour traffic to my ob/gyn.

The baby and I came out fine - a minor issue. However, if I had that glass of wine, I know I would have blamed that (which would have been totally wrong).

If I had been drinking wine, it would have been all over my computer. I was going to stop reading this thread, but it's just about to get good. :rotfl2:

Yea. They probably would. I was never a drinker when I went to boarding school (Hello! I was an 11 year old American...), but within a year, I started drinking wine (Talk about peer pressure!)... It was never a lot, but everyone was doing it. I have only known one 'Western European' who doesn't drink, and that is because they are allergic to wine (Bad genes. A Frenchman being allergic to wine...). I am not trying to say that it is good. I would estimate that at least a quarter of the French/Swiss are addicted to wine.

My mom told me that my grandmother was so skinny when she was carrying her kids that the doctor put her on beer to help her gain weight. :earseek:

When I was pregnant, I lost my mucous plug at about 26 weeks and went into early labor. The contractions were stopped, and I was put on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy. Well, I had planned to go to a wedding 2 weeks later, my own wedding that is, and I got special permission from my doctor to attend as long as I was sitting the entire time. He also said that if I wanted to have a glass of wine, it would not be a bad idea because it would help to keep me relaxed and not as stressed about not being in bed.

Well, at my reception, EVERYONE was encouraging me to dance with my husband, something I was not supposed to do because my doctor said I needed to remain sitting. But when I ordered a glass of wine with my dinner, as my doctor pretty much recommended, those same people were up in arms. The dance would have been a heck of a lot more dangerous than the glass of wine. And I did have the glass of wine, the only alcohol I had during my pregnancy. My son was still born premature, but it had nothing to do with the wine, it had to do with the problems that caused my early labor at 26 weeks in the first place. One glass of wine is not going to hurt anyones pregnancy. If someone does not feel comfortable doing that though, that is fine.

However, if someone does want that one glass, they have nothing wrong with their priorities, they are selfish, they are not irresponsible, and they are not bad mothers. There is a big difference between the occassional glass of wine, and someone who drinks a six-pack a day during their pregnancy. The latter is the one you need to worry about, not the former.

Yes and no. Smoking is starting to be seen as not good while pregnant, but many still do. Caffeine, on the other hand... Well, lets just say, don't attempt to take the coffee out of the hands of a frenchwoman... Pregnant of not.

I was almost two weeks overdue with DD. New Year's Eve was approaching and my OB told me that it was okay to go ahead and have a glass of champagne on New Year's Eve on one condition - that I wasn't in labor (just because the alcohol could have negative interactions with drugs that I could potentially be given while in labor). Well, DH and I went ahead and purchased a nice bottle of champagne for New Years for that glass of champagne. I had not had a drop during the whole pregnancy and as we went to uncork it - the first contraction started. ;) That said, I didn't have that champagne I wanted, but after DD was born I had it at the post birth steak celebration dinner.

There was a whole generation of kids born to mothers who smoked and drank during pregnancy (because the medical community didn't know any better at the time) and those kids were not severely affected. I'm not encouraging these actions. I'm just saying take heed of the fact that there are a lot of baby boomers walking around who had mothers that drank and smoked. These were also the same generation affected by doctors who told the mothers not to gain too much weight - i.e over 15 pounds in the pregnancy. Certainly, I think we are wiser and smarter about pregnancy now, but there are many things just as dangerous as drinking and smoking - i.e the invisible toxins in our environment that I think can have an equally devastating effect on an unborn fetus. At least we can visibly control alcohol and smoking during pregnancy.

Well at least the contx started before you uncorked the bottle. Would have been a shame to waste it. :teeth:
